I need some advice with a homebrew item that I'll give to the swashbuckler PC, level 4. Is it too strong to have a glove that lets you, at the cost of one action, add 1d6 energy damage to your weapon until the end of your turn, four times a day? The glove has four gems each representing fire, cold, electricity and acid, and each gem can be used once a day. I based it off the smoking sword active, and considering I run long days, it probably won't be spammed. Then I realized it can be stacked with things like smoking sword and flaming runes for big deeps.

Should I drop the damage to 1d4? I was originally thinking of making the item do more interesting things with the elements but the swashbuckler player probably will enjoy being able to deal with swarms, oozes and other gimmicky creatures that I tend to throw at the party.
>>
>>97237462
>wasn't there a runelord girl notorious for being one?
You're thinking of Sorshen. The Runelord of Lust. She's considered a special snowflake because she's presented as a quirk chungus who got genre-savvy and recognized "Runelord" is another word for, "End Boss" and there are PCs in the world going through a check-list. The thing that gets people riled up with Sorshen is as follows,
>Got redeemed when Paizo was first getting big on "Woke."
>Got redeemed off-screen
>Got redeemed and told the players, "Nu uh don't hit her she's good now" when she's on-screen.
>Her profile is literally just Nocticula

In a vacuum, Sorshen would've been fine. Who doesn't want a sexy wine aunt? But this was fresh off the heels of War for the Crown where Paizo was very, very obvious you're working for Hillary Clinton fighting Big Mean Donald Drumpf. I'm not even going to get into those politics because everyone has their opinions on the madness of the late 2010s, but it completely reframed what Sorshen was meant to be into some dumb "progressive" update to the lore (I could've sworn they even said that they didn't want to Slut Shame when explaining Sorshen) which further added the disconnect between what the Devs intended with a character vs what Players wanted out of them.
>>
>>97239003
It still has an action cost, so it might see use at level 4 but it'll have competition when more better options become available.
>>
>>97239003
Quite frankly, this is pretty bad.
You somehow made Bespell Weapon worse. Congrats, mate, you are following in Paizo's footsteps quite well.
>>
>>97239310
Alright, that's cool to know it's decent. Can you give me examples of better options? I've only played a caster in one campaign and we barely got any gold, loot or magic items so I'm in the middle of checking them out.

>>97239839
Yeah, I look at examples of items and rules in game and use them as a baseline. How could I make it more appealing? Not looking here to make it super strong, just to give more options for the swashbuckler, like proccing weakness.

▶What is Kingdom Death?
Kingdom Death is a tabletop miniature brand stared by Adam Poots and operated by himself and his Team that later spun off into a miniature based bored game funded by two very successful Kickstarter campaigns.

▶What is Kingdom Death: Monster?
Monster is a Nightmare Horror cooperative boss battler/miniature hobby game for 1-4 players about hope in a strange world of bizarre monstrosities and perpetually darkness. Players take on the role of survivors that band together to form a settlement, fighting monsters, crafting weapons and gear, and developing their civilization to ensure survival from generation to generation.

Prologue Narration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNLc8dHv0Ac

The Game is broken up into 3 phases:
1. During your Hunt Phase your band of survivors traverse the world of KD in pursuit of their quarry.
2. After successfully tracking your quarry you will begin the Showdown Phase, where you must fell these horrific creatures in order to acquire precious resources.
3. After the battle, your survivors wander home with loot in hand to begin the Settlement Phase. Arm yourself by developing new weapons and bizarre structures to prepare for next year's hunt.

No.

>>97239687
Rocket tag happens much sooner, casters will find workarounds and you made NPCs gamebreakingly broken.

Imagine a dragon with that psudo-pounce even at mid levels; characters are going to get shredded, let alone any casting from spell-likes will be leagues faster than anything the player characters will put out. Plus side warlocks are suddenly the most powerful caster class in the game.
>>
>>97239720
I feel like making it Half-Celestial would have been a better choice, both thematically and in terms of abilities it would get with only 1 CR difference.
The Celestial Template alone feels a bit underpowered.

>>
>>97213989
Why do Gypsies and Jews still exist? Also most settings have an explanation generally along the lines of them being underestimated and extermination not being considered worth the effort or them being far more powerful than a pest race. Skaven in WHFB could overwhelm any single race, hell they helped put down Nagash at the height of his power.

I'm asking as both a GM (World of Darkness, Mekton, Cyberpunk, occasionally D&D, recently Maid RPG, Call of Cthulhu) and as an aspiring writer.
Like, sure it's the price of a Netflix sub but I'm wondering if anybody here has paid for it and if you think you got good value out of it. Bonus points if you can tell me which tier you got.

nowadays for JUST a portrait I would probably go AI honestly. Either the NPC is a bit of a throwaway in which case why bother searching for one that might be hard to find with the right tone that I want but can be easily put into a prompt, or because it's an NPC that I want to control some of the finer details of and don't want to settle for 'close enough'

It would kill the campaign. Arrianne and Amy couldn't survive alone and there would barely be any place to introduce new characters that would make sense.
>>97238952
>I wonder if the players can even fathom how vulnerable their characters were.
They do.
>Or if they could imagine their characters making the same realization.
Frost player had to break character once too because Arrianne tried to kill Ferris and he tied her up and was about to throw her into the river Styx. We're a very dysfunctional party when there is no enemy in front of us and sometimes bad things combine and it becomes really hard to stay in character.

>too little for me
Indeed, I've felt that. We're on session 33 now, and have been playing for a year and a half. There's been a couple of missed weeks in there, very few and only when I simply could not do it.

But doing it every week just wasn't the schedule everyone was able to do. However it being just 4 hours... It's a bad mix. I may just put my foot down and say that there needs to be some effort to interact, try to do non-combat things in between sessions.

I know that for many of them they couldn't do every week because they already had a game on the off Saturdays, furthermore I know my monk player runs a game on those days, I'm running a Shadowdark game on those days (which the barbarian player is also playing, as his half-elf witch) and he also joined a Mage game that starts not long after our City of Brass game ends.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Fomalhaut is one of Melan's settings, the oldest and probably better-known. You can read his blog at beyondfomalhaut.blogspot.com and buy his zines and modules (which are extremely high-quality) on emdt.bigcartel.com.

Yoon-Suin is just one product but it's easily Noisms' best known work/setting; his blog is monstersandmanuals.blogspot.com/ and there are like seven copies of the second edition print available on his store, https://www.noismsgames.com/. (He said there were about 25 copies left in early December)

Alternatively, you may be able to steal all this content via the trove. I haven't checked.

EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, explore & fight each other for victory and profit.

>Maharaha LP
I think so

>Regular Troops wouldn't benefit
Then it applies to Ascetics, Pirates, Priestesses, Flag-Elephants, and Spies, which is definitely enough on its own.

>Sharpshooter
The lost men still use prophecies, and even the Arch-Heretic British can use them too. For the Sharpshooter I would suggest letting it use a variation of the predestination prophecy where only it can attack once the condition is met, but it can do so without LoS and with a damage buff. Sevenfold Sharpshooter or something like that.

>Elephants
It is a bit of a kludge, but you could combine the profiles and add an addendum saying that two elephants constitute one elite for the purposes of the elite counter. I have done that repeatedly for units.

If at any point in the noted turn the noted model enters the noted Hex, interrupt its activation, and the “Lemurian Sharpshooter” resolves as many ranged shots as it has available (if it has 4 shots, do 4 attacks; if it has 2 shots, do 2 attacks; if it has to reload, nothing happens). The “lemurian sharpshooter” still needs to be within its range to do so.

Everyone I know who watches Fatt Coville videos is a fucking terrible GM. I've never fully watched one and I am widely considered the best GM out of all 3 groups I'm part of. I am regularly requested to run campaigns. People borderline fall asleep in the games others run. There's also no tension because they know that these Coville acolytes will fudge rolls until all PCs survive the battle.

If you're a good GM, it's an inmate talent you can hone over time. You're born that way. If you aren't, then no amount of shitty advice is going to make up for your lack of talent. It just is what it is. This idea that everyone should "try" DMing is retarded. The idea that anyone can be good at it? lolno. Its like some fat divorced on who suddenly decides he's gonna become a famous author. Fat chance. Most people fucking suck at GMing. Hell, most of them suck at playing, but at least in that case the game depends less on them.

There is a subtlety to keeping the illusion and if you go overboard people will notice.
My rule of thumb is to never go beyond what the dice could actually roll without interference and to avoid being heavy handed with it.

why does everyone who plays D&D pretend that posting on reddit or commenting on twitch makes you part of some kind of D&D player community
most of you guys who post like this are antisocial by nature and have like a handful of people you play with at best
its all LARP
the few popular DMs that exist are chads with rich parents who could have been successful doing anything else anyway

>But my point is that GMing isn't something you can learn from scratch
I must mildly disagree upon that point, if only because that’s how I learned. I will agree to your overall point that some people are just incapable of dming no matter what one tries, but most beginners just act overwhelmed on how to start organizing their shit. That’s where “advice” is helpful imo, basically providing a framework to start until they have enough experience to break out of the mold.

Fair enough.

I believe people can learn to DM the same way people can learn to ski. Some people are gonna suck forever, sure, but most people can do it enough to have fun with friends. I haven't watched much Matt Colville, and the weird lefty genuflections makes it hard to take him seriously.

But I think if you want to shit all over him you'd at least come up with some things he says that you disagree with or want to tear down or whatever.

Having never tried Draw Steel, I can't really shit on it, but having read through it enough to know that my table wouldn't ever bother with it (they're all good-hearted libtards, so nothing related to politics would be why), I really was left wondering why the game seemed to have so much variation on its same core mechanics, and seemed to have a surprisingly large number of spendable combat resources, some of which, like "surge", are both universal and mostly undefinable in what they mean. Further, science fiction is in the lore and in the races, but not in the classes or kits / equipment, so what's up with that?

If you read how Draw Steel is meant to be run though, you'll see a lot of assumptions about his gamemastery style, what's worth tracking, what experiences are worth focusing on, and it's so far from any verisimilitude, realism, or even the idea of pinning down a set of things that you can reason within, that I feel he's an entirely different animal, like something from an adjacent but distinct hobby.
