what edition is best for small scale games? 500 to 750 points? I prefer skirmish size but kill team has become quite shit and I want to have some flexibility in list building
>>97253217I feel like for small scale skirmish gaming like that 1st and 2nd edition is probably the way to play. But that's not to say that 3rd and 4th and the Kill Team and Combat Patrol rules of that era, Kill Team of 3rd(KT came about in late 3rd through white dwarf, late 200s IIRC) and 4th are a wholly different beast from what it is now, do a lot to scratch that itch.

>>97254229One of the mechanics of a game is that you don't always have to use mechanics to determine the outcome of the game. The game itself is a vessel for telling the story. The gameplay is a means to resolve conflict, emphasis on "a", because good roleplaying or planning can completely remove the risk of failure. TTRPGs are entirely unique, and while you say you can't "have your cake and eat it too", that's exactly what separates TTRPGs from video games. The Gameplay aspect is just another tool to tell the story. You have Skill Checks and combat checks for when the outcome of an action is in question, if the outcome is not in question (meaning guaranteed success OR failure) then they don't need to be rolling checks. Checks rolled without purpose is a waste of time and a misuse of mechanics.Combat is often a slog, especially when it's just "the gm rolled on a random table, this fight has no stakes and means nothing beyond a way to waste resources because the system is poorly balanced dogshit or the GM can't design encounters for shit". If you want combat to be good, make it matter beyond "I'm draining resources" (not a problem in well-designed systems). If the players are in a fight, it means diplomacy has failed or was never an option, and this foe is a serious threat that is relevant to the current story.Exploration is very much bookkeeping, and is tedious as hell. It adds nothing of real value unless you're actively making it the core of the game you're running, which is why you don't need as much focus on it. Furthermore, 90% of things related to survival can be handled with a skill check. You don't need 300 pages of rules on how to wipe your ass with a leaf.If anything, the mechanics in a good system are intertwined with the narrative, and a good GM looks at what abilities the players has and designs encounters to best use those abilities - be it combat or exploration.TLDR, you're a disingenuous gigafaggot nogames.
>>97254229You started with the nogames accusations, anon, so you don't get to complain about "people who will cry "nogames" at someone who just wants to discuss games". You don't want to discuss games, you want to diss the way other people play games, and at this point it's pointless to pretend otherwise. Nobody has said that your table can't play in whatever style you want, but you have spent plenty of time complaining about other people liking something you don't like. You're also blatantly, shamelessly making shit up instead of sticking to replying to what people are actually saying. For instance>You cry that combat is a slog and exploration is bookkeepingthis is something you pulled from your ass, or maybe something the voiced in your head whispered to you. I literally said that mechanically defined gameplay like combat and freeform roleplaying can comfortably coexist and contribute to a greater whole, one where all that setting and story and dialogue that for some bizarre reason bother you so put the mechanics-based action in context and give it meaning, while the outcomes game mechanics lead to shape the story and setting. If you genuinely read my post and imagined it to mean that I dislike game mechanics, you have some kind of a cognitive problem. If you didn't genuinely misunderstand my post completely, then you're just a profoundly dishonest piece of shit.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! What would be your top picks of the TSR tournament modules to run at a Con?I have found a list, but other than hearing word of mouth about Tomb Of Horrors, I have no idea which might be the best
>>97251612Leaning towards C1 Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan, for no real reason.
>>97251612Tomb is a pretty memey module to run at a con because it was meant as a high-skill, high difficulty module even in the (much more old-D&D-focused) environment it was written for. I'd do G1 or something. Anon's suggestion of Tamoachan isn't bad either.
>>97251612Always wanted to run this one as a tournament module.
