Traditional games?
>>
Before the Flood, the Apkallu, seven sages sent by the god Enki—taught humanity civilization: writing, law, architecture, magic. One sage, Adapa, grew proud and refused to accept mortality. He bargained with the gods for immortality but was granted only the mark of immortality: eternal bloodline, but not eternal life. His descendants bear horns like the bull-gods, eyes like the star-gods, and tails like the serpent of wisdom.

Loki the Trickster fathered monstrous children with the giantess Angrboda. The gods feared them and bound them, wolf beneath the earth, serpent in the sea, death-goddess in the underworld. But Loki also lay with human women, and THOSE children could pass as human... almost. The horns (like Hel's crown), the tail (like Jörmungandr), the eyes (like Fenrir's gaze). They are chaos-marked, neither fully bound nor fully free.

Long ago, humans and Asuras (titans who oppose the Devas/gods) made a pact. The Asuras would grant humans power to resist divine tyranny; humans would provide the Asuras with worship and descendants. The children of this pact bear the marks of both realms, horns like the demon-kings, eyes like the hungry ghosts, skin touched by the hells. They are caught in eternal war between gods and titans.

The Branded descend from Cain, the first murderer, who slew his brother and was marked by God. He founded the first city in defiance of divine will, and his children learned forbidden arts. The mark breeds true through generations, horns for pride, tail for serpent's wisdom, eyes that reflect hellfire. They can be redeemed through suffering and faith, but their blood inclines them toward fratricide and rebellion

Before the Tuatha Dé Danann brought order, the Fomorians ruled beings of sea, storm, and chaos. When the gods defeated them, some Fomorians fled to human settlements and interbred. Their descendants carry the marks: twisted horns, eyes that see through glamour. They are the OLD blood, from before civilization, before law.

Avoid "kitchen sink" world building, instead of throwing every fantasy race and magic ability into your setting, don't stitch together random historical kingdoms and call it a day (So no Camelot right next to Revolutionary France) you have t learn to say no to ideas that sound nice in your head but wouldn't make sense in the setting as a hole. Like why do the dwarfs or gnomes have industrial tech but not humans or Elves? etc.

Besides Middle Earth, are there setting with a monotheistic God but has powerful deity like entities who may or not be worshiped?
47 replies and 7 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>97186607
As far as Theism is concerned, Monotheism is the objectively the logical step after Polytheism.

As a matter of logically speaking I don't think a god from a polytheistic pantheon can't even really be called by definition a god unless you change the definition of god. Just a very powerful entity with a domain.

If you really think about it, an universe simply can't stay stable with multiple equaly powerful gods otherwise we'd end up in a Warhammer 40K situation (and that's if we're VERY LUCKY). So it makes sone to ultimately have one that god that is the real God. Even real life mythology had to cope with entities like Zeus, Odin and Perun otherwise reality would just collapse.

The example setting that comes with Basic Fantasy RPG has the monotheist Bethite faith and a lot of druidic and natural religions that worship deities that might or might not be just local spirits .
There are two competing Bethite sects with very different doctrines and theologies, and I find it pretty funny that clerics of both of them still get get power from their God equally.

The former Imperial Cult and countless kami would like to have a word with you.

>Buddhism that sort of believe in God
Traditional Buddhists do not deny the existence of gods, who will all eventually die and seek refuge in the Buddha dharma sooner or later, but there is a significant difference in understanding between a layman reciting Namu Amida Butsu in the hope of being born in a Pure Land through even one sincere recitation and Christian of Gnostic belief in a supreme creator deity or monad. Lest you lead others astray through your over simplifications, gnostics very much believed in a creator deity who created material existence only this demiurge was not supreme.

In the oldest biblical texts, Yahweh possesses attributes that were typically ascribed to deities of weather and war, fructifying the Land of Israel and leading a heavenly army against the enemies of the Israelites. The early Israelites likely engaged in polytheistic practices that were common across ancient Semitic religion, because the Israelite religion was a derivative of the Canaanite religion and included a variety of deities from it, including El, Asherah, and Baal. Initially a lesser deity among the Canaanite pantheon, Yahweh likely became conflated with El in later centuries, taking his place as the head of the pantheon in the Israelite religion. El's consort Asherah became associated with Yahweh, and El-linked epithets, such as El Sadday, came to be applied to him alone. Characteristics of other deities, such as Asherah and Baal, were also selectively absorbed in conceptions of Yahweh.

As Israelite Yahwism eventually developed into Judaism and Samaritanism, and eventually transitioned from polytheism to monotheism, the existence of other deities was denied outright, and Yahweh was proclaimed the creator deity and the sole deity to be worthy of worship. During the Second Temple period, Jews began to substitute other Hebrew words, primarily adonay ('My Lords'), in place of the name Yahweh. By the time of the Jewish-Roman wars, namely following the Roman siege of Jerusalem and the concomitant destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, the original pronunciation of the name of the deity was forgotten entirely.

I'm running a battle soon - main opponent is a beserker werewolf. I like to use music as background, but most of battle ambient is:
- swords clanging
- too epic
- annoying vocals

I found this, but maybe fa/tg/uys can recommend something less digital-y and similarly visceral?

Thanks

I don't know about all that. Two things can be true at the same time, there was an interesting game with some pretty sharp rule design, but it was ultimately never quite able to live up to its potential.

Ultimately the company shifted towards more predatory business practices, on top of mismanaging the balance of the game, despite making millions off of tournament attendance. They don't have to make a well thought out product anymore, they just have to put on a good show.

there are god boxes/cases with several unique foils in them, it's been that way since at least beta, and now they have actual god packs with all foils. I opened a box of beta wave 1 that had like 4-5 foil uniques before. Also had a similar thing with arthurian legends where i opened a case and got several unique foils and a curio in it. So far i've opened 3 unique foils out of 8 gothic boxes.

ashes ascendancy box finally came in. happy to report suspicions are allayed. print quality and all that is up to snuff, nothing damaged, all clear.
the new phoenix decks both kick dick, immediately made me want more especially the gear/robot deck. thought I'd hate the pseudo dice power but it feels fucking good. the bird people deck is more of a standard aggro ally-based thing but it performs.

the new PVE is a little simpler and easier at level 1 than the old one. prolly trying to be more new player friendly. but it scales decently, I played it at +3 and it was a challenge. they didnt fuck up the rulebook this time either always good to see a dev learning from mistakes.
pic related is the tits, it's going in every deck with gears.

The party opted to take the "Iron Evangelists" cell directive.
In character reasoning was that it was establishing an alternative identity for them, while allowing for a "re-affirmation" of their faith in the God-Emperor through preaching after they had been exposed to demons.
OoC, the players wanted access to "Pure Faith" and Faith Talents in case of future run-ins with more demons. Even the player running the Blank, who couldn't get the talent, agreed to it in the interest of group cohesion and character development.

Saw Guererra isn't good really. Most of the Rebel leaders are sketchy at best minus Leia and Dodonna. Meanwhile Mon Mothma in Disney canon is basically a hyper rich oligarch living in a bubble who happens to be salty that after she was almost Palpatine's right hand (she was head of the Loyalist committee during the clone wars and one of his greatest and closest allies in the Senate) she was shut out of the important discussions when the Empire began. And when the Alliance wins, she champions disarmament and reinstates the exact broken system that led to the Clone Wars in the first place.

Thales, the great city of magic, has its own mythology. The city is old enough (time isn't linear there) and big enough (space isn't smooth there), that the public government records have no relation to reality whatsoever.

Some of its major urban myths:
>>
>>97195564
Sorry, cut off.

1. A minor sub city of perfectly identical, empty skyscrapers that can be visited by taking coffee from a certain vending machine.
2. Half demon hybrids running organized crime rackets in the immigrant enclaves.
3. Aliens crashed in the central park's main lake. The government enclosed the area, but mysterious individuals kidnapped the (dead or alive) aliens from the ship and disappeared.
4. A certain ambassador is a secret prince hiding from his siblings.
>>
I think I'll use the Nephilim and Canaite/Lilith as basis for Tiefling/Aasimar genesis. Both brough knowledge and built the first cities, but became cruel and arrogant and were destroyed by the Flood for their divine transgression. I think it is better than "my grandma meet an angel once" or a "succubus once seduced my grandpa".
>>
Anyways, urban myths are much more believable in a city where the Magical World is an open secret, and almost every third person has first hand experience of supernatural phenomenon.

Once you know your Chairman is a time travelling magic user and the major Superpower of the planet was founded by alien immigrants that controlled the entire galaxy, nothing feels impossible.
>>
Is there a precedent for universities to test your practical skills rather than your academic ones?

For all its political aspect, a magical academy is supposed to be a really elite trade school. All that matters is whether you can do Magic, not whether you can score high marks in written tests.

Your ranking isn't determined by test scores, it's determined by how well you can use your magic skills in conflict.

Do you play tabletop games with your kids?
