That depends on if a place that doesn't exist counts as infinitely distant or non-distant due to the fact that it is inaccessible.
If it is infinitely distant, then every location in all my games is infinitely exotic. If they are non-distant, they aren't exotic at all.

Are there any mech games where the mechs are a sideshow to other vehicles? I like the idea of blowing up mechs with superior conventional vehicles but basically every mech setting ever made exists to justify the opposite of that happening.

Heavy Gear is like that. Yes, the focus is still on mechs but tanks and helicopters are king of the battlefield. Think of Gears (mechs) as replacement for infantry.

I had an idea for a CYOA antagonist and rival. The main gist is that he is salty that the girl he liked was taken before he could ask her out even though the girl had embryonic feelings for him. He then ends up on the losing side of the conflict that kickstarts the CYOA, nukes a capital, and when he renecounters (You) he is seething.

Because he planned on romancing the daughter of the girl he liked as a second shot (the daughter like You) and blames (You), a completely different person and kid for the girl he liked getting stolen, the nuking, and a bunch of other stuff not connected to you at all.

Having a gritty setting not afraid to kill it's main characters is a good example of a non-generic setting tho
>>
>>97196433
I don't think you understand what a setting is. Setting is the world that the game takes place in. The land, the history, the religions and cultures and cities and major factions and characters.

What you are describing is game tone. Thats a setting agnostic quality. I can make a meatgrinder kill-em-all one shot in literally any setting, from 40k to He-Man.

If the most exceptional thing you can say about your "setting" is that you are going to kill off characters, you really do have the most generic setting possible because you couldn't even come up with anything better to talk about.
>>
>>97196479
>If the most exceptional thing you can say about your "setting" is that you are going to kill off characters, you really do have the most generic setting possible because you couldn't even come up with anything better to talk about.
Well I could've brought up that it takes place in a world inspired by the Bronze Age Collapse but I've found that most players don't care about lore or setting. Tone will stick with them more than setting.

GW kept mentioning space marines or even primarchs coupling with regular human women and it always took me out of it. Like how the fuck? Wouldn't she get ripped in half? But then it dawned on me. They just have tiny penises. Well not by human standards, but relative to body-size. Like think about it, why would you supersize the dick too when there literally do not exist women big enough to handle that size? So the simplest explanation is they just keep the penis size of a regular human.

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

Honestly, if you want to get into an old school setting you should go with Mystara. Whole planet + hollow earth with great maps that is still supported by fans to this day. File sizes too large to post here but check Atlas of Mystara.
Old settings like these were just a jumping off point for the DM. Do not try to keep them 100% lore accurate. Get the maps and the general feel then change whatever you want.

Don't get me started on California! It's not even an island, let alone an enchanted island, let alone the one visited by Esplandian!

Seriously though, the Central Valley is between one and two of the Greyhawk map hexes wide. Calling the Sheldomar a valley is like calling France a valley, it makes no sense.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

you're right, i suppose it's backwards. i do that thing where i take the wording of thief abilities literally. when people say thieves start out underpowered...they can climb SHEER surfaces the vast majority of the time, that's absolutely insane on its own.

i think of it more in book terms than in movie terms. the visuals/physics/mechanics of it don't matter so much, it's like a legend where the legendary thief Horatio Moneybags IV scaled the Tower of the Giraffe. cool.

but something about hobbits...i dunno. just don't like it. odd inclusion.
>>
Hey everyone, finally getting into the OSR and bought those nice looking green cover reprints of 2e PHB, DMG and MM plus the Birthright box. Anything else I need?
>>
>>97196295
I too dislike hobbits included as a standard fantasy race. Elves and dwarves find their origin (differing as they do from ol' JRRT) in myth, much like many npc races and monsters. But hobbits feel so signature to LotR that they seem out of place to me. Not only that, but their nature needed to be changed drastically, from fat village folk who fear anything or anyone unusual, to something more likely to spur them on to adventure. The hobbits from the books were extra exceptional, and would probably level cap at 4.
