What makes a setting don't feel generic a.k.a. not DnD?
>>97196399You are a fucking moron. Read the OP again, but slower this time, until you understand what this thread is about before you regurgitate your teenaged nonsense again.
>>97196414Having a gritty setting not afraid to kill it's main characters is a good example of a non-generic setting tho
>>97196433I don't think you understand what a setting is. Setting is the world that the game takes place in. The land, the history, the religions and cultures and cities and major factions and characters. What you are describing is game tone. Thats a setting agnostic quality. I can make a meatgrinder kill-em-all one shot in literally any setting, from 40k to He-Man. If the most exceptional thing you can say about your "setting" is that you are going to kill off characters, you really do have the most generic setting possible because you couldn't even come up with anything better to talk about.
>>97196479>If the most exceptional thing you can say about your "setting" is that you are going to kill off characters, you really do have the most generic setting possible because you couldn't even come up with anything better to talk about.Well I could've brought up that it takes place in a world inspired by the Bronze Age Collapse but I've found that most players don't care about lore or setting. Tone will stick with them more than setting.
>>97195702>(So no Camelot right next to Revolutionary France)Why not? Seems like a good fit to me.
How do we fix Steampunk?
>>97196423Why would you do that? The tensions between technology, magic and nature that your pic brought in have already become fantasy staples. Its in goddman everything, has been for decades. The rest is just when goths discovered brown suits could hide their growing guts and if you added in more colours there were more girls you could photograph.
>>97196526>Its in goddman everythingmention 10 rpgs with this theme
alternate history Ancient Greece, where Hero of Alexandria's steam engines took off millennia early (but electricity, medicine, etc did not).so then you have the Greek gods and shir, not just London with blimps.
>>97196423Arcanum is technically a fantasy-steampunk crossover. Not pure steampunk. Your problem is fixed just by picking something without magic or classical fantasy races.
>>97196423Give it its own identity beyond "fantasy Victorian industrial era with cogs glued on".>>97196570Steampunk is automatically fantasy because the "technology" ranges from plausible anachronism to outright impossibility.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. Hey everyone, finally getting into the OSR and bought those nice looking green cover reprints of 2e PHB, DMG and MM plus the Birthright box. Anything else I need?
>>97196295I too dislike hobbits included as a standard fantasy race. Elves and dwarves find their origin (differing as they do from ol' JRRT) in myth, much like many npc races and monsters. But hobbits feel so signature to LotR that they seem out of place to me. Not only that, but their nature needed to be changed drastically, from fat village folk who fear anything or anyone unusual, to something more likely to spur them on to adventure. The hobbits from the books were extra exceptional, and would probably level cap at 4.

Factions are one of the cornerstones of a good dungeon. I'd go as far as to say they may be one of the most important pieces. Without factions, you have nonstop hack-and-slash. Factions enable meaningful player choice and give party faces something to do without trivializing the dungeon. Why don't modern D&D modules have much faction stuff? Classics like The Caverns of Thracia or B4 the Lost City are packed full of them. Are the people designing current dungeons just talentless morons?
It set off you, yeah.
>>97180308Retard.
>>97181877They're not sending their best that's for sure.
Clearly, since they sent you.
>>97179508>Are the people designing current dungeons just talentless morons?>posts an image of someone clearly staring into the mirror. But in all seriousness, I agree with your overall statement. Every dungeon should be an ecosystem of its own, complete with invasive species. There should be at least one producer faction, at least one consumer faction, one higher-order consumer faction that feeds on the lesser consumers, and one invasive faction trying to move in.

>>97195590>colonial quagmireChina was never colonised and the state that became india wasn't even a state before the British went there, just warring little kingdoms ruled by turbo sadists. India is one of the few places where the intervention of ""DA EVIL COLONIZERS"" was actually the greatest boon imaginable to the people living there.
>>97196491Yeah anon, just shoving several different territories together was perfectly fine, nevermind mind the fact that as soon as the british fucked off, two countries segregated as soon as they could (Pakistan and Bangladesh) and only whoever was aligned with the british even had resources to do anything. Talk about complete bias.China was never colonised, but he meant in a way that they were barely industrialized after the communist revolution and needed work to grow like any other growing economy and they took all the work as quickly as they could.
>>97196505You're not even making a coherent argument. Brownoids and leftists generally can't.>but he meant in a way that they were barely industrialized after the communist revolutionHow is this anyone's fault but there own?
>>97189957I basically made all their characters for them after asking for descriptions on what they do, how they fight etc. and give them a cheatsheet rather than a full character sheet. And pretty much as you say, we play the game as "pretend but we roll dice" where they're free to come up with whatever solutions they want and I'll just tell them to roll a basic stat check to see if it worked.
Introducing my 9 year old daughter to FATAL this weekend.
Does your character treat figures of authority with deference or are they a cheeky bugger?
>>97189073>>97195451>>97183368This looks like shit.
Not always deference, but always respect. I try to respect other people's NPCs and worlds they're presenting. And my character doesn't want to die because of a pissed off noble. I'm mostly the forever DM, though, and I know how annoying it is when players disrespect something you've put effort into.
>>97183368Deference because I'm not an overgrown toddler who never got past the "seeing what I can get away with" stage.
>>97194785Don't even reply to him, he's completely mindbroken by that shit and has been constantly trying to bring it up for years.
>>97183368Usually treats those who are worth deferring to with deference and the ones not worth deferring to with pretend deference. He isn't some edgy anarchist, but he's also not a system bootlicker and understands the need for authority and the way authority can be legitimate.
It doesn't have keyboard shortcuts for bolding text. Are there any free programs for setting up a book? I'm making a bestiary and I want a faded background but OpenOffice won't expand it past the margins. Scribus is fucking annoying. >>97196314ghoul kings are still powerful vampires with necromantic powers and could use those powers to raise low level undead like they do with monsters, these would be paesants or pilgrims in their delusions, while being a conveniently moving source of food to feast on during migrationsthe toppled kingdoms the madness usually takes roots in would have no shortage of dead that would haven't had the chance to become ghoulsI included the necromancer because I like the idea of these pseudo-athurian courts having mystic advisors, and deathmages look crazy and learned enough to possibly walk into and see the ghouls' delusions and make themselves useful assets, or more conventional mouthpieces for some rare interactions with other factions that aren't utterly one-sided, as fun as that is, having other options available is optimalthe vengorians fit the army theme perfectly, they're themselves crazed monstrous vampires, it's just a matter of establishing that some of them don't just sit in their own vengorian kingdoms but wander and find a weird commonality with the ghouls, the ghoul kings could see them as wandering questing knights

Hrm. How would fa/tg/uys handle a PC that the player wants to play as a former war criminal? So according to my player his character did a lot of heinous shit during the war that ended about 10 years ago, but is now haunted by these terrible memories. The player is asking me for game mechanics to apply to this and I'm a little stumped. Some advice from you guys would be most welcome. On my own bat I figured since this is a fantasy world getting actually attacked by the ghosts of his victims would be appropriate, but I do I really want to give him the opportunity to kill them twice?
