NOT A BEN 10 RPG, Pic is just the basic idea.Pretty much, i'm looking for an RPG based around the idea that the base character NEVER gets any stronger, any better, nothing along those lines. No level ups, no no nothing. The main character has the exact same stats throughout the entire game, maybe getting better equipment, but no extra abilities.BUT:, like Ben 10, the idea is that the character can unlock (Maybe via buying using XP or being gifted by the GM or something like that) new forms that they can turn into.Something like Ben 10 with the alien forms that grant superpowers, or Animorphs with the different animals, or Digimon with the Digivolutions. Stuff like that. Are there any systems along these lines that exist?
>>97207837Mutants & Masterminds
What little of the show I did see back in the day included him trying to turn into one alien only to end up turning into a different one, and it makes me think that a variant of Everyone is John where each player is an alien trying to be activated by the hero regardless of how appropriate their skillset is to the situation at hand would make for a pretty funny game.
>>97207837You could do this pretty trivially in GURPS. Don't reward regular character points, but let players get new Alternate Forms in play.
>>97207837M&MToonGURPS could do it, but it would not be funThat is what I can think of right now.

I like the lore of D&D, I like the mechanics of Warhammer Fantasy, so just for fun I want to try and build functioning armies for Warhammer Fantasy based on D&D creatures or factions. Anyone interested in getting shit done?
>>97211948As a general rule of thumb I go with the equivalent of a level 1 character is a 10 point model, a level 2 character is a 20 point model, etc. But this only really works when you are converting a D&D PC, important NPC, or large monster into a hero, lord, or monstrous creature For D&D huge creatures I would go with 20 points per level equivalent, and 40 points per level equivalent for a gargantuan D&D creature Where things really fall apart though is all the level 2-8 humanoids that tend to crop up during a long D&D campaign. At lower levels these guys would be bosses of a dungeon and thus should be treated as unit champions or heroes in a Warhammer Fantasy game system, but at higher levels they are just 100% forgettable mooks that can often be found in large numbers and are more suited as elite infantry in a Warhammer Fantasy game system. For those kinds of situations I would recommend going with D&D level equivalent times two plus four for the number of points the model would be worth in a Warhammer Fantasy system So for example, the basic bugbear warrior, which is usually seen as the equivalent of a level 2 PC character in most D&D editions, would be the equivalent of a 2*2+4=8 point model in a Warhammer Fantasy system, probably a beastman Gor or some sort of basic skirmisher
>>97206311>I like the mechanics of Warhammer FantasyVery fake thread detected, the mechanics of WHFB are so notoriously bad that the game actually died.
>>97211334The hardest thing to refine is, of course, the gish. The concept of a fighty wizard isn't entirely unheard of in Warhammer - Ogre Butchers, Vampires, and Chaos Champions of Tzeentch from 6e onwards all exist - but it's definitely rare, and the trick is coming up with a way to not make them utterly broken. Which, I think, is traditionally handled by making them super expensive, points wise?

>>97206912To finishBone Brothers are equipped with personal vehicles as it is a note that to be a member you must have a personal vehicle. Motorcycles are preferred. Members wear common light or medium MDC armor with their gang colors or important emblems glued on their backs. They do however stay well armed with over 50% still owning CS rifles they defected with. It is rumored that they have a dug out headquarters where a skull walker or DH transport is being repaired. If you encounter the Brothers on the road it is important to keep your cool. Both Bobby and Ronnie followers are easily provoked to violence but only the Bobby faction who are ardent about not killing civilians. Ronnie faction members are encouraged to lie and present as well meaning until they strike, however, this order is often ignored as gangs prefer to charge in leveling laser fire before they know what's happening.I have been trying to post on this board for DAYS and the new captcha keeps bugging out on me. Will our based autist do another end of year stats gathering editionPrevious thread: >>97161490Pastebin: https://pastebin.com/h8Tz2ze8Survey results: https://pastebin.com/YJPZ44rqTQs:We play games because it's fun and often argue how X is fun (or not), but rarely think about what exactly is the "fun" part of playing.>What is the most fun to you? Creating or experiencing a story/narrative? Challenge and competition? Novelty? Mastering a system? Immersive theme and artwork? No wrong answers>What boardgame do you think has the most percentage of sold but unplayed copies? Hobby boardgames only, so no risk/monopoly etc.
>>97215189>How is river city glasswork solo?No idea. I'm not into solo board gaming. I've mostly played at 3p and 4p, with a little bit of 2p.>Sidenote, "solo compatible" being tacked on with really shoddy or boring solo modes being a huge trend is killing me and making it impossible to find new games. As an outsider looking at solo gaming from afar, I think that trend has nothing to do with solo gaming itself and only exists to make reckless consumers more comfortable spending money on games they might never get to the table.I would be interested to hear your perspective on it, but the whole thing reminds me of https://udan-adan.blogspot.com/2018/03/rpg-books-as-fiction.html Not 1-to-1, obviously, but I see the same broad strokes.
>>97214807>We need less low effort games. So much lessThis year I only have bought the reedition of Ra, Dune Imperium Uprising and an expansion to Neuroshima Hex. And some games for my kids, but I don't count them.>>97214722>The bigger the industry, the more niche products can exist.I mean, I would love to agree with you on this, but i think, that as opposed to video games, where one dude can create a hit like Megabonk, board games require the empirical, physical medium which costs a cartwheel of money these days. Yes we have kikestarters and goimfound, but even though those platforms give you a free hand on what you try to put there, the competitors work using a formula that pretty much leaves smaller, more innovative games with no chances to succeed. The other thing is the economy, I don't know how things are going in the US or other parts of the world, but most of Europe is struggling, and boardgames aren't articles of first need. This summer for the first time in years I've considered selling a few of my games that I didn't actually played even once. Not because I'm short on cash, but rather to have a clear conscious when something interesting would come out. Fortunately for my wallet, this year is really poor when it comes to games that I would enjoy.
>>97215244Cool link, and interesting article since I am a person that grew up reading 3.5e books front to back for fun since I never did get a group going as a youngster. The thing is I guess my perspective is a bit odd because in that example, I did enjoy reading the numbers stuff because my mind is wired weirdly. So more or less of the fluff stuff meant nothing to me. I still to this day download ghetto ass mothership books for example and just read a bunch of random numbers for fun.You are right though in that there is a lot of solo being added just to be able to expand the buying pool. I think that's what I was saying as well, these solos are really tacked on and not intentional or purposeful. So yes, definitely, the companies dont want to leave money on the table with their multiplayer solitaires From another perspective, it makes my brain think, they are bad designers because they dont get why multiplayer solitaire is popular, it isnt the solitaire part even though thats the main gameplay. But im not enough of a designer to dig more into that bone>>97215226Then the world is your oyster. 3-4 players and you've enjoyed those mainstream titles I would say go look up any list of mainstream popular family/gateways and youll be bueno. Ill go dig though and paste some in a min, since it is a little hard to find the gooood shit lately
I was surprisingly charmed by Ugly Christmas SweatersYou think: oh gawd, *another* trick taking game, except how you win the trick has significant implications on the current turn, next turn, and possibly for the entire round. Just enough gristle on the bones to stave off why are we here vibes, not overstaying its welcome, probably nasty at 3-4 players.
>>97214213i mostly don't like automa solo modesstuff like Under Falling Skies, ODD, For Northwood, Unstoppable, etc. that is essentially solo co-op is my preference. or literal solo co-op like Spirit Island, Doomrock, or Sentinels. I'm excited for my copy of Deckers to arriveit's rare that I enjoy a solo bot like the one in Captain's Chairanyways solo doesn't replace playing many types of games that only work with other people. still it's fantastic to be able to game any time I want with zero compromises
>author adapts his D&D campaign into a well-written, highly-entertaining animated seriesWhy has nobody done this since?

>>97215185Like I said, I don’t know if these are the objective best. I just felt it’d be better to throw in a bunch of above average ones with ones that try and do something a bit different, otherwise I’d be either recommending old shit like Aura Battler Dubine or Those Who Hunt Elves, or stuff that barely qualifies like Hero BBS or Ishura. And everyone and their grandma always recommends the usual slop like Shield Hero or RE:Zero or Overlord even with how everyone and their grandpas has dissected their flaws to death anyways.

>>97214130>>97215185Here's some you didn't mention I found OK (disregarding more blatant slop, others' recs I haven't personally verified, and non-isekai; still, slop warning implied):>The Ideal Sponger Life (guy gets title related, but gets increasingly embroiled in politics as prince-consort)>Karate Survivor in Another World (palate cleanser after bullshit OP protags, but goes the other way into "this is why we can't have nice things" misery porn territory, Berserk-lite vibe)>No Game No Life ("OK, so here's a pair of kids who beat God of Games in chess. In the prologue. Now that everyone sensitive to bullshit OP protags got filtered, let's enjoy watching people cheat in increasingly bullshit ways")Also some time-traveler/timeline stuff, these are not slop:>Jin (modern neurosurgeon in early Meiji Japan)>Zipang (what if Final Destination actually did something with consequences? modern destroyer+crew in WW2)Both of the above are complete mangas, but Zipang is not fully translated to English (there's a full French version floating around)>All You Need is Kill (short; wartime Groundhog Day taken to its logical conclusion)>Qualia the Purple (big one-shot; this one is hard to describe without spoiling, but great for the stated subject)If anything can't be found, check for manga versions, I don't know if all have LN.

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Tolkien is to blame for the state of 5e and generic fantasy that you see in TTRPGs. We wouldn't have horrible big fat fantasy books, nor power fantasy / wish fulfilment, which you find in scaling levels through so-called "XP". Fantasy used to be an experimental, creative, and wild genre filled with mad imagination; now, it is all wooden and samey. >tl;drListen to this:https://voca.ro/1Rwc7lMX0hfT
