You go insane not because of alien geometries. You go insane because as a modern man, you have been taught that man is the master of cosmos, then faced with the reality that you are not even a flea next to cosmic monsters.

I did! Replaying the game in my head. Wish I could remember what he ended on. I managed to get rid of him but my opponent top decked... something can't remember. Was later in the game and they ended up winning shortly after. When we got to late game I managed to wipe his board but my board presence wasn't great so he managed to make a comeback.

Enforcers seems to be an aesthetic choice from what I've experienced so far. Especially if they're people coming from 40K. Its hard to break out of bolt guns and uniforms I guess.
>>
>>97286385

It's the latter. They don't care about fluff, they just are going off of aesthetics. Players don't want to read a source book. They want to watch yt videos of sweet lore and then beat up the other players with their cops.

>Realistically what would life in a world of superheroes where your ability is defined by your bloodline be like?
Well, for a start, bloodline powers means secret identities do fuck all unless your entire family tree keeps that shit secret, so masks are out.

Also means supervillains would be pretty rare for the same reason. You aren't gonna have people start trying to crime when their powers are basically a fingerprint unless they're immediately willing to live on the run. There's a difference between running after you get caught and running in the first place and people willing to do A aren't necessarily going to be willing to do B.

Of course you understand we're about to raid three different places in Bridgeport, and if we get our hands on the floozy before you, you won't get your reward.

Let's hope neither of us grab a body-double by mistake. Time to ask a favor from Scholar.
-Kakophoni
>>
Kakophoni is gonna go speak with Scholar, temporarily get a power boon of Obtenebration and go grab the target using shadow-step to cover ground quickly. Once staked he drops them off. Whether he grabbed the real one or one of her body-doubles is up to Venus' player. I'm trying this style out if it's not good let me know so I can adjust accordingly.
>>
>>97287844
gonna turn in for the night, didn't get sleep last night so passing out early.
>>
>>97287844
Venus in Furs would prefer for Kakophoni to attend the briefing and fight guns blazing alongside House Venus and their allies, but ultimately she doesn't give a fuck as long as somebody delivers some results. She's an old enough vampire to know when to look the other way, and there is no problem in having Kakophoni getting some spotlight and doing the loner secret agent thing, especially if Haschke doesn't have any meaningful reason to be necessarily, physically located in either the militia HQ, social centre or drug alley.

The Devil Wears Me has a... "very personal reason" to offer this reward and he is very confident he can tell the real thing from a possible fake once he can have a little conversation with this ancient enemy, best if with a thrice blood bound Haschke (who was almost completely drained and just woke up from torpor).
If you ask me having stunt doubles around when nazi hunters and photo archives are a thing... isn't the most clever of plans, so I legit didn't think of that.
Uncle's objective is and remains to deliver the bitch to the Prince, the reward was just an incentive, and if Kakophoni can do this Navy SEAL copypasta thing to get her, then it's money well spent in his mind.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Hyperborea definitely shares the bones but it really is its own thing. I actually quite enjoy segmented combat, so it's something I'd likely houserule back into Hyperborea.
>>
>>97286902
NAYRT but IMO it makes perfect sense. You can agree that OSRIC is the most faithful AD&D retroclone and still think Hyperborea is the *better* AD&D retroclone. LotFP occupied a very similar niche relative to B/X pre-OSE: I don't think anybody would have argued it was more faithful than Labyrinth Lord. People just liked it better.
>>
>>97287008
I think that's a fair point. Though I guess you'd want to qualify what sort of retroclone it is as >>97286631did.

How would adding a female only paladin order improve your setting?
10 replies and 3 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>97285712

Historically, abbesses wielded real political power, controlled lands, and some could even mint coins or raise troops. You could expand this: make religious orders one of the few paths to education and political influence, creating a parallel power structure. The Church could require female representation in certain councils, or have traditions where certain theological or diplomatic roles are reserved for women.

Prolonged conflicts or crusade-equivalents could create precedents where women defend castles, lead forces, or serve as military commanders out of necessity - which then becomes normalized over time.

Different inheritance laws make a massive difference. Gavelkind (dividing inheritance among all children) versus primogeniture, or systems where daughters inherit in absence of sons. You could have regions with different legal traditions that create interesting dynamics when noble families intermarry.

The ACW should never be compared to the Napoleonic war, for one it's half a century later, and the equipment, tech, and weaponry heavily reflect that, but also the troops and officers very significantly less professionally drilled than Napoleonic armies
>>
>>97287345
ACW is a different kettle of fish. In Peninsular times, you'd advance into the literal fog of war. You wanted to be sure of the enemy's dispersement, and so if you were faced with a bank of riflesmoke (and occasional fire) it was safer to march in, break up stragglers and hold the ground than it was to sit still and lose men (not to mention becoming a target of cannon, counter charges by cavalry, etc.). This should not be assumed to cover siege/fortification fighting which was a different thing entirely. Plus skirmishers playing by different rules, as it were.
By the time of the ACW the infantry's rate of fire was such that only very close charges were advisable. If you marched a unit into a solid defence you lost that unit before they could arrive in close quarters. This is made more true as you move toward WW1 with the more widespread use of machinegun positions.
>>
>>97287447
>>97287451
ACW was later and the tech differed, yeah, but it's the human element I want to point at in this case, notice I brought up medieval lines as well. You can see that every night in a club, it's not easy to break up even two boys with fists flying.

Also, while training is a defining factor in how men behave under stress, the quality of such training was so prone to changing between one battle and another, even inside the same army, that it can hardly be used as a standard of any kind. Napoleon himself kept compalining about troop quality going down, until he fought with a large part of his army as militia at waterloo.
>>
>>97285005

Why would they? People don't go around take, say, the 1640s tech and just do a "setting" around that.
For that matter, not the tech of 1972 or whatever.

If you could choose the set of core classes (in the PHB/core book and ideally the rest of the classes are designed around them) what would you choose?
They don't have to be identical to their current incarnations.

For me its,
>Ranger,
absorbs a lot of the fighter but keeps the independent survivalist schtick.
>Paladin,
Divine warrior with special abilities but no spells
>Rogue,
Sneaky stabby martial, basically as he is now
>Wizard,
>Druid,
>Cleric,
Default to being lightly armoured wandering friar tuck type character, but with options to put on some armour and bonk.

Anyhow:
Fighter, Thief, Wizard, Cleric, Ranger, Bard
Cleric is of the mace and mail variety rather than the uwu my heals aren't good enough MMO white mage variety, naturally.
Race-as-class also acceptable depending on setting.
>>
>>97283278
They'd be psions, obviously.
>>
>>97277187
Rather than picking classes from a system, it's probably better to just make one's own system.
>Warrior, Rogue, Mage, Priest
Backgrounds get chosen to add certain things to your starting kit. Less about "classes" and more about character concept. For example, an outlander background makes a warrior into more of a barbarian, turns the rogue into a hunter, a mage into a druid, and a priest into a shaman. A soldier background makes your warrior into more of a soldier (no shit), a rogue into a scout, a mage into a battlemage/war wizard, and your priest into a chaplain. So the game should be less about picking a class to fit a character concept and more about having a character concept and then creating that character with a combination of archtype and background/origin. Want a forbidden dark magic aspect? Take the dark forces background and turn your warrior/rogue/mage/priest into a Blackguard/Cultist/Warlock/Dark Apostle
