I was thinking that Jusko might have used some specific monster. It does look like a demon to me. Hairy legs and it looks like its wings have some kind of boils on them. Some type of pestilence related demon?
>>
>>97390962
also, that girl wears too many riches which are impractical for lovemaking to be a courtesan. I would bet princess or noblewoman, dealing with a demonic assassin in her home.
Those baubles hanging off her arm bands and anklets can't be helping with the Move Silently checks.
>>
>>97391004
I said courtesan, not whore. A courtesan is more like an escort, since she still provides sex but also acts as a companion or temporary trophy-wife, and thus needs visual appeal beyond just the physical. I agree with you about the Move Silently checks, I actually thought of "courtesan" because I realized that those accessories would be very impractical for a rogue, and being both near-naked and unarmored at once is impractical for anyone other than a fighter who only uses natural weapons, which she isn't (since she has a dagger).
>>
>>97390925
looks like gargoyle. i hope that dagger has some enchantment on it, cause it won't do shit to that monstrosity
>>
>>97391196
I use these pictures both inspirations and visual aids for encounters. I find it's much quicker to both introduce new NPCs through them, and get through encounter setup. Don't have to talk so much, can just go 'here is what you guys see' and move the game along.

The ability of certain people to play a game that you're not smart enough to track isn't pretentiousness, but simple superiority.
I played it with my buddies for almost a decade back in my twenties and had a blast until we made the mistake of bringing in a zoomer whose attention span couldn't hack it.

Use Phoenix Command Hand-to-Hand or Sword's Path Glory. They handle this and more through modelling of wound channels in a computer model of a human body with lethality and penetration resistance values assigned to different tissue types. It's a much more elegant way of handling this issue and eliminates pretty much every weird result you've ever seen.

Tabletop RPGs tend to split up crafting into a high number of crafting subskills for every individual area of expertise. There's no question that crafting is still extremely powerful despite forcing you to go through this hassle, but what are your thoughts on which particular crafting subskills tend to be the most useful in the context of a TTRPG campaign, be it a medieval or modern or sci-fi setting?

Pic related is from Legend of the Five Rings, where I'll be playing a crafter soon, and I intend to invest heavily into crafting. But feel free to talk about any game you've had experience with.

Crafting is not a major issue in my system, because wealth doesn't translate directly into power. Player characters only need vast amounts of wealth if they want to improve their social standing, if they like the idea of engaging in businesses, buying warships to become privateers or something similar to that.
>>
>>97369009
Being a good GM means being able to respond to unexpected player actions. Remember that the TTRPG hobby started out as expansion packs to wargames which were added to simulate fantasy adventures rather than battles with pre-determined starting conditions.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

With the amount of money and volatility and money in tcgs, it's only going to get worse. Not proxying at this point and stocking up on sleeves and playing cards to back them is a big mistake the way things are trending

depending on their power and how easy it is to become a mage, their existence could seriously threaten the monopoly of power by any rulership class.

Like if you're not careful any exploited/discriminated group could produce an indivdiual capable of taking down a nation.
>>97375909
honestly depending on the setting the power dynamic between those two is so great, that any relationship forming would have to avoid really hard to not become fucked up.

Rules for PC creation haven't applied to NPCs since 3rd edition, and even then a lot of the writers at the time treated elves and drow and dwarfs and such as generally superior to humans even if the rules didn't always reflect this

I think the best way to look at it is that a mid-level player character could represent an above average elf, tiefling, or genasi, or a well above average dwarf, or truly exceptional human or halfling

Obviously there would be some nuance, like a mid-level gnome wizard would be considered uncommon, but a mid-level gnome fighter would very rare

Wait, maybe I'm getting it now. So some effects make you take double success on some numbers, and if you have multiples of the same you go down, but every number above that is also doubled. I was thinking only the specified number would be doubled.

>>
>>97390842

>>
>>97390485
>>97390632
>I was under the impression that anything from 7 to 9 is a success anyway, are lower rolls always better?
On a normal roll, 7-9 is one success and 10 is two successes, which is to say that by default 10s are doubled. Having double 9s means that rolling a 9 or 10 counts as two successes, double 8s means that rolling 8s through to 10s counts as two successes, and double 7s means that rolling 7 through to 10 counts as two successes each.

By default, if you roll ten dice and score one of each number 1-10, you score five successes (7 8 9 = 3, 10 = 5). If you have double 7s you would score eight successes. This is also about how the averages work, so if you're assigning difficulties to an action keep in mind that by default it takes someone with twice the number of dice as the Difficulty to succeed about 60% of the time. Six dice is likely to meet Difficulty 3, ten dice has about a 60% chance of meeting Difficulty 5, and so on. With double 7s those same six dice are likely to meet Difficulty 5, and ten dice are likely to beat Difficulty 7.

never thought they would nerf that instead of instances of super damage or enemy nullification wombo combos
>>
>>97389120
Most of the 2e community agree that the 2e Mythic system is very undertuned and underbaked, even for 2e standards. Though it wasn't about trying to nerf the "broken" parts of 1e so much as actually making it function as a system by not having it stuck in an AP subsystem.

>>97388841
I mostly agree with this, but I do want to acknowledge the powercurve of 2e in general. Low-level feats are just that, low-level. They are meant to be more practical or lowkey then character defining. And this applies to the Mythic system as well, you aren't going to expect a power to scale like Aerial Assault if its not a distinct spell or class power.
2e can be pretty No Fun Allowed but I think there has to be more a middleground between "oi you god a loicense to be cool tuday!?" and "free 10d6 goomba stomp every round".
>>
>>97389408
Ignoring the mythic system is still incredible feat/magic item/level intensive in 2e to come close to what you could easily do athletically/acrobatically in 1e
>>
>>97389434
That's just a true statement, I am very certain a point was to make sure you can't. By default, a "full-round action" to move in 2e is far more freeing, if less multiplicative than a full Run/Charge in 1e. But I also think neither game was ever trying to be Exalted, there are diminishing returns to high degrees of athleticism on both player and GM. You can only make a mountain so high, especially for the one person that builds for it in your campaign. And unless you houserule how move actions work to work like they do in D&D5e, you not only waste all your additional movement as you can't skirmish, you lose out on other full-round actions.

Nothing in 2e is supposed to be as easy to accomplish in 1e. Either it is meant to be more an investment to compensate for the streamlining of core systems, or not applicable at all because they are two different games and have two different balancing points.
