Mid-Colonial Island Adventure Setup & System HelpHello fa/tg/uys and a happy new year. I'm planning a new campaign and would appreciate your collective wisdom. I'll lay out the pitch and would like your thoughts, ideas, and especially system recommendations. The year is roughly equivalent to the early 1700s. The players are new arrivals or long-term residents of an island colony. Mere weeks after their arrival it becomes apparent that no ships from the homeland arrive. Ships sent out for help or trade simply vanish. The colony is now utterly isolated. Resources are finite, society is beginning to crack, and the unexplored interior holds ancient secrets.>Resource ScarcityNo contact with the outside world. Every nail, bolt of cloth, and ounce of gunpowder is precious. Gold is the main currency, and it matters—for buying scarce supplies, hiring help, bribing officials or mayby hiring trainers if gold can be tied to character advancement.>Low-to-Mid MagicMagic is rare. Players won't be casting spells at the start. It's something discovered in the forest ruins or bargained for with strange spirits mid-campaign. Church sanctioned magic is the exception with high ranking members of the faith having access to considerable magical power.>Healers for Hire There are a few lowly priests of the faiths that can perform rudimentary healing rituals but demand some gold or favors. This type of healing and warding, especially against diseases, is used by the church to maintain power and influence. They're NPCs, not party members, at least initially and the most common source of magic.>Zero to HeroI would really like for the player to start really low powered. More akin to semi-skilled commoners than competent adventures and it should take time for them to actually become strong and capable. I would like for them to eventually become big players in the island. Maybe even hold titles or positions of power.
>>97277102You probably want to skip ACKS. The autism and granularity is not on a healthy level, and you're going to end up wasting far more time just going through its "procedures" than you likely would even just making a whole brand new system out of wholecloth. The quality of the rules really leaves much to be desired, and it is all built around some odd assumptions regarding its "roman-esque" default setting, and most of the game seems inadvertently (and occasionally deliberately) designed to be as un-fun as it can be. I have no idea why anyone would recommend it beyond them never actually using it.OSE serves as a solid foundation though, and is a much tighter and more more polished system. Sure, it doesn't do much beyond updating some now-ancient rules a little here and there, but it's generally inoffensive ruleswise and fairly accessible.>SotDLIt's an odd one. Part of me really wanted to like it, but the "tone" of the game never really suited me and my group may have actually started to actively dislike it, because every so often it would get unnecessarily edgy. The real thing that got me though is how the Boons/Banes should work well in theory, but in practice the d6 is a little too unwieldy for the purpose. I feel like using d4's could have helped in regards to smoothing over some of the odd randomness, but you can't really build a system around constantly rolling d4s (because they don't roll).
>>97271332I really like this aproach, where everythings count. Low magic but having to bargain with spirits, its also my jam.Systems, Beyond the wall for his magic system/having a village/colony sounds apropiate if you go OSR like. Mythras, wich si very good for anything down to earth, would be my second option for system. I really like the Colony stuff, tough I usually go for the bronze/iron ge amalgama with lots of inspiration from conan and other pulp stuff. Of late I been reaing books about whaling (because its the nearest thing to monster hunting we have done) and only one whale like a right whale would be a boon for any colony or village, so monster hunting and hte rest could be very well be the diference with starving or being secure.
>>97271332You could homebrew that off of ReConquest very easily. The skill system would work and the magic may also (the magic is generally rooted in Scandinavian folklore and has usage conditions and restrictions associated with that, maybe alternate it so that natives have their own rules for casting magic, colonists also do, different gods and spirits respond to them, learning the other's magic would probably be an ordeal and require being accepted into the other culture as one of their own. It also natively has that divide between folk tradition magic and church magic, with sorcerers dealing with spirits and bards using divine magic)It also has a system built in for terrain generation and exploration and very detailed rules for travel, survival, building frontier societies. The game is about resettling a 'lost' continent. It's a completely different flavor, but that's easy to change up for your own use. Oh, and the system was made by an autistic white nationalist and convicted murderer, if that matters to you.>>97271531One thing to consider is that gunpowder does not need to be imported and can be made rather simply. Conquistadors made it after arriving in the new world. The ingredients are simply sulfur (found near volcanoes as mineral deposits), charcoal (burning wood), and potassium nitrate (saltpeter) which can be found in bat guano deposits (caves). Basically, even an isolated colony could likely produce their own gunpowder. Depending on the timeframe of your setting they may also be aware of the "French method", of isolating saltpeter from urine primarily from stables, that began in the late 1700s.
>>97271332so the colony of roanoke well it sounds like a perfect fit for mythras to me. these low power, commoner to hero, low magic kinda realistic games are the type of games it excels at
>>97280104colonial gothic is also an underrated game that i ppreciate and would fit very well what you re trying to do

>>97275322>I really like the volumetric thing you have going with the edges.Ok, I'll try to keep those. > USAOk, gonna try to get it done for this evening, here's the New Alamo Outlaw. Very cheap, low Discipline, that will likely require you to use Ambush mechanics or loading up on Alcohol to get them to push through the mid and late game. Thinking there could be some campaign mechanics (maybe a Criminal sponsor?) where that roll may turn into a promotion mechanic. Any feedback on switching the Gunslinger to a Specialist profile?
>>97279360Stage Coach. Lots of rules, but I think it should be simple enough once it hit the table. Shelter rules are for the Frontier Settler, if you load on them then all you have to do is give your passenger Warm Meals and you'll recoup a part of your cost. Not enough to turn it into a legitimate econ engine, but a start. RAW there's nothing to prevent you from using the Stage Coach's Embarked models for the various Ambushes, so there's a bit of gimmick there to pull as well. (Fml new kitten likes to tapdance on my keyboard I had to rewrite this twice already... )
>>97279360Now that I think of it, could we make a gunslinger unit that is a "bounty hunter"? Maybe it gets twice the amount of silver from the units with the "criminal" keyword. There are so many variations of the "gunslinger cowboy" we could use (plus, it's fun making their art).
>>97279360>Gunslinger as SpecialistI'd be alright with that, but could we have a ranger trait that lets you take them as Elite? That way you could still have a posse

>>97279342The most recent game I ran, which went to level 16, actually had the players operating out of a home base for more than half of the campaign. My bigger issue with bastions is that most of the effects aren't particularly interesting.
>>97279342Just have a frontier fort or something with a lot of area to explore around it. That way, you've always got somewhere to return to, even when you run off in pursuit of whatever immediate goal.
>>97276731I actually find all of that very appealing and diegetic, too.
So what do you put on a DM screen, and are there any recommendations for how to make one?To reiterate.
Anyone play it yet? I like the "rustic fantasy" setting. The core rules seem interesting, it has more mechanics and gameplay than most other narrative games. I enjoy that it doesn't have moves or whatever to confine you, you can actually play your character and do whatever you want. It's got enough knobs and options in terms of resolution I feel like it's actually a real game despite having that more story focus vs simulation focus. And I like that the DM has all the traditional power of the DM and there's not like "Fate Points" or something else that gives players control to change stuff.Thinking I might try a short game for my table, just a few lower powered sessions. It also has good tools for a solo stuff which is interesting.

She either reminded him of his elven wife and it was instant desire for her, or instant desire for revenge on elves using her. Kit's plan is to present Laurana to Takhisis and get as a reward the Crown of Power. In return for his assistance Kit agrees to ask that Laurana's soul be given to Soth, though at the same time Kit promises Tanis to release Laurana into his care. Takhisis agrees to give Laurana's soul to Soth but of course that never happens. There's a bit of a scuffle and it turns out that Laurana is protected the the gods of goods so Takhisis couldn't do it anyway. At the end of that scuffle Soth says Kit has amused him and as an undead he might wait for her, which might be the moment that he pivots from Laurana to Kitiara.

>>97279923>>97278264You read it first, moron.
>>97266322I wasn't aware paid DMing needed defending. If you don't like it or want it, don't engage with it. Personally, I'd be more concerned about whatever your life is lacking in that you have time to care; this is my advice for most instances of "stop liking what I don't like" as it happens. All of that being said, paid DMing came about because it supplies a demand. To wit: running a game, in both narrative and mechanical terms, in a way that is competent, entertaining, and engaging remains a niche skill in what was, until fairly recently, a niche hobby. Then, the perfect storm of Stranger Things, Matt Mercer, and 2020 happened, and all of a sudden we find ourselves in a hobby that is overrun by normies with room temperature IQs, and all of them want to play, yet very few are willing or able to run a game. The forever DM phenomenon is as old as the hobby, but for some reason there's this assumption that forever DMs are so because nobody else wants to DM, and that's only part of the issue, the other side of the coin is that few people, especially in the hobby's current state, are able to run a game worth playing in the first place. Speaking anecdotally, the experience of thinking I'll finally get a chance to enjoy a game as a player, only to quickly realize the aspiring DM's prep was minimal to non-existent, their understanding of the rules is journeyman at best, and it's impossible to immerse myself in their narrative because they don't have one, has become a running gag. That's not to say I don't appreciate the effort, or that I won't sit through a slog of a campaign to provide a friend with guidance and feedback, because I do, and I will, but few things hit like a game run by someone who knows what they're doing, and that's what I, and apparently, enough people for there to be a market, are after. So yeah, while for friends I'm happy to run a game for nothing more than pizza and a thank you, if other people are willing to pay me, I'm willing to get paid.
