Out on Patrol Edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPED A GAME
IT IS PLAYABLE. IT HAS BEEN PLAYED.
EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, explore & fight each other for victory and profit.

3 versions of the rules exist, 2 of which have been playtested. The main one is 2e, to be found :

I hate painting webbing but my Colonials are almost done. Then I can go to the land of New Mu and play there with fun (painful) things like magnetization and veils.
Since I want my whole Mu force to be wearing face coverings of some sort this does mean that if I do a priestess she'll have to be veiled like picrel. Those glazes look painful and I'm not great at faces to begin with.

Moreover, Hive War is actually a great box to see if you'd like Necromunda. Despite people's gripes with it, it is a fully self contained box with essentially it's own lite rules for gang construction for all the house gangs, a scenario list with options to link them together with minor advancement elements for a demo-campaign experience, and a small game mat for those 5v5 scenarios, bit of terrain, and the rules to go with them. If you buy Hive War and like it it's easy to expand as is, if you like it and want more you get into necromunda proper, and if you dislike it it wasn't that big of a commitment. Despite being closer to the actual game, I think Secundus is a much worse place to start.
>>
>>97369889

When you're young you resent 40K, MtG, and DnD for capturing so many players who could be playing more fun games.

When you get older and wiser, you realize those games are containment systems for the worst people.

>torp light cruisers
They're a bundle of fun. Endeavours can use their S2 torpedo salvos to snipe enemy torpedoes and peel fighters off of airstrikes, while a couple Dauntlesses hit like a cruiser but fold quickly when they take fire (a typical cruiser lasts about 4-5 turns slugging it out with another cruiser before it's crippled; a light cruiser is more like 2-3)
>Dictator over Lunar
I do like a Dic. They don't support the light cruisers quite as well as a Lunar -- Lances ignoring blast markers is a hell of a drug. But it is a pretty solid little ship that works well as a battleship's escort. The Mars (a Dictator with lances on top) is kind of the default support carrier and flagship for a lot of players because it's punchy and flexible, but it also costs a lot more than the Dic. The nova cannon, 60cm lances and 45cm batteries are a hell of a drug. You can get a battlecruiser in your fleet as long as you have at least two regular or light cruisers, so it's legal with what you already have. With an Admiral and the battleship it ought to be just shy of 900 points, just enough for a squadron of escorts or another Light Cruiser.

If you don't want to bother with attack craft at all, then Bakka can sort of get away with not using carriers. Which is good because the only carriers they actually get are two "named character" ships and a battlecruiser carrier with broadside lances that's.. about as good as the Mars. Better fighter supporting a proper fleet, worse as a small flotilla flagship. Also it looks ugly. This is all without getting into the weeds about Reserves and allies, but really you can get by for quite a while without bothering about all that.

Unironically go out and look at non-40k art. Especially Surrealist and plague-era medieval art, weird-ass Eastern-bloc animation, pre-Tolkien fantasy and SF. Block in shapes and write down cool ideas. Look at the actual shapes of things instead of just the textures. Buy cheap minis and hold random bits up to them to see if something calls out to you.
Pic related is a serum bottle, a trashed Sentinel, a Kinder egg and some random scrap with an old knight model and a plastic dwarf nailed to them.

It would never happen. GW HATES non-GW products used in their wargames, so a battle between GW Space Marines and a creature from another franchise is impossible. Well, sure, there's cheese strategies everywhere (CSM with Obliterator spam and Bikers spawncamping with daemons, for example), but I was talking more about the casual setting. Nids are very strong at that level desu.
>>97369813
I know, but I generally tend to avoid "giving myself more" house rules. Still, wouldn't mind trying.
>>
Chosen having a gorillion wargear options is fucking kino and I refuse to play any edition where I cant give everyone in a squad jump packs and power hammers
>>
>>97370069
I mean the oposite, there are not that many cheese tactics. The already mentioned ones are basically the only worth mentioning.
Nids are just ok at a casual level because horma/termagants are expensive unless equiped with spinefists, genestealers are even more expensive and fragile, carnifex sucks at melee, in fact most tiranids actually suck at melee. Zoantropes are easy to target if you don't learn how to shield them with other troops, warriors are bad, reaveners are not easy to use etc
Nids are very much fine.
>>

Yeh I meant flavor and balance. *In general* the 5th ed codices have some of the most flavorful and best and most unique and creative content in them over any other edition of warhammer. But they didnt always (read most of them lol) do a good job balancing it. The notable exception is that dark eldar book, which is just chock full of awesome units, rules, wargear, and options, while also being very well internally balanced. There is just so much cool stuff in it. On the contrary one of the most boring codices is the 4th edition eldar book (but its still better than the 3rd ed one cause fuck 3 shot starcannons lol). Ironically the coolest eldar book every published is the (and I hate to say it) but its the 7th ed one, simply because they finally took the time to come up with cool and thematic rules for all the aspect warriors.

So my DND group was kind of disolving, 2 out of the 4 players left because of life issues (one got a job abroad and the other one is dealing with life), to keep playing we incorporated 2 new players with not so much experience but avid watchers of Critical Role.

One of these player conditions was that we incorporate x cards to the game, she says that it makes it much more comfortable for her to know she can avoid unpleasant story elements having this tool.

I started to read a bit about it online and is this something you guys have used? In my 20 years playing I've never used this.

>But anon. That faggot hasn’t changed in the last five years. He WANTS magic to ALWAYS be magic.
First off I've only been in these for at most three years. Secondly, I'm wanting "magic" to be capable of definitions clear and static enough to function for GAME RULES, because that is the subject of the board.

>Even the omniscient GOD Almighty HAS to see Himself as a miraculous magical being.
In the sense that He be ALLOWED to look upon His differences from any other actor and declare His actions a distinct set called "Miracles", as opposed to you constructing from equivocations that He may not use that word for such a distinction despite exactly such being a common use of it for centuries.

>I'm wanting "magic" to be capable of definitions clear and static enough to function for GAME RULES,
Vancian magic. That means fixed spells found in ancient tomes / given directly by the gods. Nothing else allowed, no variations, no substitutions.
>but my homebrew super flexible magic syst...
NO, it sucks. There are exactly 0 "good" flexible magic systems. I will not read your 200 pages of play pretend sodoku, so i can make a more optimized "power word; kill"

Also casters do not get to choose spells. The GM decides which spells are located in which dungeons.
>>
>>97370681

>Also casters do not get to choose spells. The GM decides which spells are located in which dungeons.
You suck many cocks
>>
>>97370803
On my end the reason for wanting more flexible magic is to save page space compared to the infestation of permutations, and as a thematic prevalence thing I like at-will slightly-worse-than-mundane-option cantrips. I also consider a stable floor of character function important to avert just getting your balls crushed on loop because nobody got the "right" loot or build options which doesn't work with full GM dictation of available spells, but cordoning the fuckery with teleportation, long-list summons/shapeshifting, and 20 divinations bait off from assured access mechanics is fine.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Very excellent choice! Not the easiest to run: the maps are a bit hard to read, the random encounter system is a bit nonstandard, some of the factions are more implicit than spelled out, so the DM needs to familiarise himself with it a fair bit. But if you're ready (or good at improvising) I'm sure it'll be great.

been working on finalizing the card redesign instead of the wiki.

some changes regarding general gameplay:
1.) Tapping for combat seems to pace the game better. Tapping (by effect or combat) also reduces stat by 1 until untap.

2.) Triangle effects now tap in addition to being - stat.

3.) Energies played from your hand are "put" instead of "Projected" (like MTG lands). this only matters if you are making a deck that abuses energy removal.

the wiki needs to be updated to reflect these and some other changes, and it also need to be generally cleaned up. i'm using a pure html wiki right now (no database), so it has minimal functionality, but it's simple.

the new card templates are basically done. i'm making 2x45 card starter decks with the new templates.

Feel free to laugh at me if I'm wrong but I'm expecting quite a big showing for 30k tomorrow, they've been hyping the custodes refresh since the new edition was announced and all of the other games shouldn't be getting anything huge.
40k is in it's end of edition campaign which means it won't get anything massive.
AoS's next big release wave comes out on Saturday so there will probably be a gap before they announce another big release and tomorrow will just be a few armybooks and pity heroes
Bloodbowl is never a big focus on preview streams

Im not excited at all for it, because oh boy an already borken ass faction is going to get more broken shit.

It is reaching the point where custodes are what space marines were originally advertised to be. Space marine/legions are like playing guard, and playing guard/aux is like being a fucking cuck who is into cock and ball torture at this point.
Not mech aux though, mechanized aux and guard is based.

I was so very pleased and surprised with Siege of Cthonia. "Yes. They've still got it". And they still do, they just have to remember what they already did and keep developing it.
But to be honest, I'm not sure this Tactical Journal thing lends itself to it....though some Exemplary Battles were basically that, and that series wasn't half bad.

You'll get a single custodes female character and that's it. Not even any liber teases.

I haven't played against 3.0 Custards yet but are they? Their stats are great but it seems pretty easy to feed them crap while farming VP from Line units, army-wide Vanguard sounds quite detrimental against many lists in the context of progressive scoring.

I'd argue that their 3.0 rules are much more soulful and the army's internal balance is nowhere near as bad as what it was in 2.0, which is an improvement. Custodian Guard spam was abysmally unfun to play against.
