Its just my midgoal, I hope things go that way but don't intend to hamfist it.

>>97220453
Only pure charisma and wordsmithing or are you open to using sorcery to addle the mind and go full dark influence? It could be cool to see characters play on the bad side and need to be rescue/redeemed. and have characters with Iron Will no-sell the dark spells.

>>97220467
IMO only really perception and intelligence are hurdles and I don't subscribe to 5's being a hard line. I think characters with 3s and up would be resistant since that's already monstrous.

To address the stats as a concern though, I think dark magic helps here because senses can still be tricked by magic and intelligence clouded.
>>
>>97220534
>Only pure charisma and wordsmithing or are you open to using sorcery to addle the mind and go full dark influence?

He does have Cursed Flesh Seal, which makes people he's beaten much more susceptible to him. There's also whatever we think Maximum Talisman Master and the like could do. I am open to mind control but a significant part of his character is that he's very knowledgeable, 'wise,' and charismatic and uses the truth as a weapon rather than purely reliant on just lies. I fully expect him to never actually fully corrupt or control anyone, but enough to cause some havoc and disunity.
>>
>>97220551
As an aside if we did want him to be full dark magic master controller I could easily trade out some points to up Charisma to III and take Attractiveness III as some sort of hypnotic evil glamour rather than being the sexiest man alive. He'd become VERY reliant on Perks instead of Techniques but it could even be a point that he isn't a great Cultivator.
>>
>>97220534
>Its just my midgoal, I hope things go that way but don't intend to hamfist it.
I think it can work pretty well, we have the characters for it. I had some ideas for that as well but I would need to ask the relevant anons to see if it can work.
>and have characters with Iron Will no-sell the dark spells.
It sounds fun, but going by this and the 5s in both perception and int I made a character that is as immune to it as you can get. Without having a dedicated technique for it that is. So he's more likely to be the one that finds out, at some point. Still a cool subplot.
>>
>>97219557
Nobody officially picked it up. We had a brief discussion about planning it in thread and then someone just puts the ideas in a story but that was a bit shortlived. I can find the links to the discussion if needed.
I will wait a little more for it then I may just close it myself. Not in the spirit of a chain but it is kinda holing us back, at least that's the general feel.

I'm brainstorming some stuff for DCC, thought /tg/ might have some good ideas.

Premise: Dungeon Crawl Classics night at the local pub, we do one-shots every week (characters persist, but it's different DMs doing different stuff across a bunch of settings and plot threads). Games have to be tight, well-paced, and light on the deep RP and bartering with shopkeepers; the best adventures start with "You are at the entrance to the dungeon."

The arc I'm working on is the city of Noctburg; its central-europe-themed gothic/industrial horror. It mostly exports alchemical goods; the Chymic League has enough political power to ignore what scant regulations exist regarding pollution, and working conditions in their refineries are horrible enough that organized labor agitators are popping up.

The theme of Noctburg is predation and exploitation; humans are very much part of the food chain. Half the muggers are human, the other half are some manner of urbanized monster; ettercaps with garottes, cockroaches that walk upright and wear trenchcoats, selkies/kelpies/rusalkas/ect in the river. Heavy emphasis on anglerfish tactics; everything that wants to eat you has a pretty face or sounds like a child in peril.

Even the spooky stuff just wants to eat you/live in you. There's ghosts, but also all manner of non-dead-human psychic parasites and manifestations of ambient misery; Silent Hill stuff happens at lot here.

The alchemical/industrial stuff means that players have access to lots of consumable items; flares, grenades, acid, healing serums that cause addiction, chemical sprayers. I've been considering including blade oils as well. Also, constructs; less steam and clockwork, more wet-cell batteries.

So, Dunwall+Yharnam.

These are the Silent-Hill-Esque monsters I've been working on, they're adapted from the Sorrowsworn in 5e; I've been trying to crack the "Only vulnerable when illuminated" mechanic without making lightsource bookkeeping miserable. I used the lesser monsters once and it went okay, but I want to be more ambitious and use the bosses next.

The most recent idea I had was property-flipping; there's a lot of real-estate in Noctburg that's perma-condemned due to hauntings and spooky contamination; warehouses and temples and tenement buildings that WOULD be valuable, but anyone who spends time there goes all Jack Torrance in short order. So adventurers get hired to go in and clear out the nastiness (either investigating to figure out what atrocity happened and setting it right, or just killing all the spooky monsters and exorcising/fumigating the place).

Here's a sample adventure where there's an outbreak of Russet Mold at a refinery; PCs sneak in to steal formulas and product, see what happened to the first official cleanup team, then run into the second cleanup team on the way out; very Half-Life, with environmental storytelling, repeated use of encounter areas, and logistical hazards.

What I'm stumped on right now is Vampires. No one else has done anything vampire-y yet that I've seen, so it'd be novel content for the group. But I want to up the urban predator angle and do Blade vampires; I want that scene from Blade 1 where the PCs are at the in-universe-equivalent of an underground rave, then the blood sprinklers turn on. The problem is how to translate "techno rave" into gothic gaslamp fantasy, and I'm still lacking a proper premise/narrative.

Also, haven't put much thought into representing them mechanically; lean into the more-grounded Blade vampires, or the spookier Nosferatu shapeshifting-shadow-projecting-animal-controlling sort.

I just want people to be humming techno beats to themselves while they kill vampires in a basement.
>>
>>97220164
>technobeats from the 2000s
>gothic gaslamp fantasy
Might be hard to achieve. Could do very elaborate punch fountains with clockwork mechanisms and statues that have blood coming out of them at various points and the statues are iron maidens with bloodbag sacrifices in them. The tricky part I think, is that gothic vampire stuff doesn't have high pace as any part of it really. The shift from very prim and proper high society party people to total savagery when exposed to bloodlust might work.
To keep the DCC oneshot hijinks you could start everyone at a masquerade ball, explore a bit, statues activate and its a reverse dungeon where the players have to get the fuck out as the revellers are in various states of failing their humanity rolls.

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.

I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.

Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies.

These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence.

This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.

What would you anons say the appeal of Beast is over the rest of WoD or CofD? I'm aware CofD is fairly setting independent and you can sort of cook up your own stuff but lacking in the similar lore that old WoD has makes it difficult for me to invest time in planning out a plot and characters.
>>
>>97218942
Being a complete asshole without consequences. It's a game for meanies and bullies.

I tried being evil but it felt very uncomfortable.
>>
>>97218809

To clarify:
• This is technically a third-party product.
• The only reason why it is third-party is because Chronicles of Darkness was abruptly stopped by the publisher. The last Chronicles of Darkness product published by Onyx Path was Deviant's own Clades Companion, back in 2024.
• Eric Zawadzki was one of the two leads of Deviant core. He was also the lead for the supplements.
• Eric Zawadzki is now writing almost all of Black Vans. It is still him writing, just under self-publishing.

Eric Zawadzki put up his last supplement, Shallow Graves, on both DriveThruRPG and the Storytellers' Vault. According to him, Black Vans should be out in a couple of weeks.

Previews have been going up on Eric's Patreon recently: some free, chapters' full text for paid subscribers.

>I tried to go for a more social character for once and kinda regret not putting my freebie dots into more utility skills like drive and such.

I am a great advocate for Deviant's own Hyper-Competence and Omnicompetence as boring, yet highly effective numbers-boosters for Skills.

>the appeal of Beast is over the rest of WoD or CofD
It doesn't have one. Beast is one of the most poorly-written gamelines by far, probably the worst in all of ChroD. Its thematic premise was ass-backwards from its conception, trying to present the Begotten, who feed on people's fear and suffering, as a sort of allegorical oppressed group, while the Heroes they create by virtue of simply existing are egocentric chuds persecuting them for their nature despite them being anything but innocent. After the backlash OPP received due to the gameline seeming like weird abuse apologia, they were poorly rewritten to sand off their edges, leaving their concept weak and unfocused. You cannot look at the writing and mechanics of Beast and give a clear statement on what the game is actually about, thematically speaking. Is it about embracing being the monster the world sees you as? Is it about teaching hard lessons to humanity by terrorizing them? The corebook waffles.

Beasts were also pitched as "the crossover splat," but while their crossover content is built in and they try to say pretty much everybody else is somehow related to them conceptually (because hurr durr they're the ultimate monsters), it's really inorganic and they don't have great reasons based on the innate drives of their splat to interact with anybody else, since the Beast/Hero cycle is so self-contained. Further, since their power floor is on the higher end of the splats, they tend to be unbalanced and lame to deal with in a splat's own territory. Part of the result of their cobbled-together concept is that essentially everything the Begotten do narratively, other splats already did better. Requiem already nailed being a predator who has to use others for your own satiation. Forsaken already nailed being torn between two worlds, one of civilized humanity and nature's savagery. Lost already nailed wielding the archetypes of myth and dream to take charge of the narrative of your own life.

>In the game Werewolf: The Apocalypse, the Garou (werewolves) were made to defend the earth from the cosmic forces that threaten to tear it apart. The Garou fight against the Wyrm, the destroyer. It is a struggle against nearly insurmountable odds, especially considering the rivalry between many tribes. These rivalries make it almost impossible for the werewolves to present a unified front against a cosmic force that pervades reality.
>From this morass of hatred and mutual betrayal, there is little hope that the Garou can emerge triumphant against a foe so well armed as the Wyrm. The Wyrm promises money, power, sex, and whatever else the heart desires to its followers while the Garou receive no reward for their striving. It drives them deeper and deeper into despair, or into betrayal so deep that they choose to serve the Wyrm instead.

>>
>>97218744
Competition missing. GW didn't even actually beat the other miniature companies. Mismanagement, corporate greed(HAH), and chasing the wrong audience killed off all the legitimate competition. Mantic is a joke but still going in their lane. Para Bellum would be great, except their prices are worse than GW, and their scale is fucking stupid. Corvus Belli sticks with their core audience, and was mired in old material which kept newer players away, while also actively working against the english speaking market until very recently. Atomic Mass is run by a garbage parent company, chasing after license money. Cmon committed sudoku. The other indies are just continuing quietly at their own pace. In order to force GW to price more competitively, they'd need to be able to produce at a comparable level. I really, really want Bamco to do this. It would be a phenomenal turn of events, but Gundam Assemble is still a little ways off, and not quite direct competition as of yet.

Meanwhile, GW has just been generating brand recognition with other media, mostly games. They run the market, means they set the prices at whatever they want, until it breaks the consumer, and then they'll dial it back a half step. Combine that all with the world state, and they can blame all the various factors to deflect from the fact that they've been on this trajectory for years. Just buy secondhand or recasts. They still produce great miniatures, but their prices are horrific, and anyone defending the prices is suspect.

Maybe those kids should think twice about deciding to be poor? Why didn't they just get more money instead of complaining to this struggling little company who can barely afford to run the shittiest out of date injection molding machines in the industry? Ungrateful little cretins.

No I lived in bedroom suburb in between 3 large cities in the most populated area of my country. But I think that's part of the problem. My town of 300k had like 12 hobby shops like that. None of them did particularly well and they were all expensive and ran by the children of realtors or banking guys. They would all kill themselves with some stupid decision and be replaced with a new one in a couple months. One of the stores died because they ordered a full pallet of dragonsmaze booster boxes and had to sell them for like 40$ each. Funky pops killed a few. Comic books killed a tonne of them. At least 3-4 died because they got big enough to renovate and then removed their play areas to put more shelves in.

They're kind of between the two

Myrmidesh are chaos warriors++, twinsouls are more of a tarpit unit that can hit surprisingly hard back but lose a lot of their advantages if they charge

But neither are 40mm base giga niggas with massive damage potential
