The further it gets from being a real animal, the less interesting it is.>>97248185Berzerk's quality is all over the map. There are arcs that are pretty good. There's a shit ton of perv-for-perv's sake, and edge-for-edge's sake. The attempts at humor are god-awful. The stories are meandering. Some of the characters are well developed. Most aren't. The art is beautiful.I think "well-realized" is probably the right complement for it. There aren't many issues of Berzerk that are, themselves, amazing as anything other than cool art. But 10,000 pages in, yeah: he spent a helluva long time realizing his idea, and it's impressive.

>>97248049You can easily draw a line to traditional games by talking about actual games, or playing games, instead of just things you can maybe potentially put in a game someday if you feel like it.You can talk about monsters or ideas for monsters or whatever, but these can easily be applied to non-interactive media. You know what can't be applied to non-interactive media, right? Or do I need to spoonfeed you that, on account you've never played a game in your life, let alone picked up a rule book. But who cares about that? This is /tg/ - Everything But Games.
I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies. These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence. This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.(Continued.)
>>97226424Any details on the first one? Does it still interact with the instability system?
>>97244627It is just a matter of straight-up swapping Conviction and Loyalty for Virtue, Vice, and three Aspirations. There are some guidelines for making it mesh with Deviant a little better. Yes, they grant Beats and Willpower and heal instabilities.

>>97248279It is really, really funny to me how Solars simultaneously have what is mechanically the best charmset for winning a fight as long as, AS LONG AS, the fight remains relatively conventional and occurs on a flat plain with no significant details. >>97248893That depends on how Primordials were fought. This might restart a bunch of arguments, but Moran, at least, suggested that they were fought and defeated through their souls. I do agree that at least tyrant lizard tier size shouldn't be a huge deal when Exalts are involved, though.

Recently I was thinking about alternative combat systems.I remember someone talking about instead of HP the payer has a Jenga tower and he needs to remove peaces once hit, the skill is to remove peaces without the tower collapsingSo I started thinking. For example what if the combat somehow involves cups and balls?Instead of a D20+modifier nonsense why not change it up? Why not give a player 10 balls or legos or whatever and to win an encounter the player needs to land 2 balls in 1 cup? There can be variants of this like a super hard encounter demands the player lands all 10 balls or what about reducing the size of the cup with the difficulty of combat? What if we implement a fate system from Talisman for the players? What if legendary bosses have something like that for themselves? And can negate the players victory? What if different monsters use different "balls" like for example some bone golems will be you throwing legos into cups and zombies are aluminum balls while naga can be gummy bears? That actually makes the monster feel different and not a copy pasted set of numbers. Also the different aerodynamics of these "balls" are part of the fun.Comment too long. Check out One More Quest. I haven't played it but it seems to have a similar silly tone and play style to the board game Dungeon Fighter (there's a bullseye board, you throw the dice and the results are better the closer it gets to the center. You also have various limitations on your throw depending on the skill you're using).I also played Dread once and it's fun for horror one shots.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. What are examples of kaiju-like monsters in first decade D&D? I'm thinking something less powerful than the tarrasque but more powerful than a Tyrannosaurus rex. Ought to be fun to use them in domain play, if one gives them concrete abilities to damage structures and "mass kill" civilians and standard troops.
>>97249007Nothing strictly first decade comes to my mind, but if you are willing to make an exception for Gygax (pbuh), you have "gargantuan apes" in WG6 Isle of the Ape, basically King Kong, and "gargantuas" in Oriental Adventures, which are essentially humanoid, insectoid, or reptilian kaiju. The Companion set also has a monster called gargantua, but it's just an algorithm to increasing a monster's size, HD to 8×. If I remember correctly, ACKS has better rules for scaling creatures up and down. Th Island of the Ape Gargantuan Apes have specific rules for their attacks acting like battering rams

Also, his wife got involved and ended up pushing reviews of stuff outside of the norm he did.Not entirely /tg/, but william srd used to be good for reviews of old systems and games based on them, but he just started sperging out over gygax being problematic and people who dislike 5th edition one day.
