On the spectrum of rubber forehead aliens to complete starfish aliens that are made out of silica and breathe methane, where are YOU specificially comfortable with. Does there come a point where an alien becomes too weird for you to "relate" to in order to include them in your games as playable races?

Personally I am fond of aliens that look plausibly like they could have evolved in a different world and have no distinguishable lineage to earth life, even if they share some superficial features.

There needs to be at least enough sexually compatible alien species to form a harem.
Otherwise, starfish aliens are preferred.

Only time I hear this is when people bring up it's as a thing. Sure, if we go by stuff like metascore, there's a clear up and down, but metascore also ranks Abrams films higher than any of the previous films (save for First Contact scoring slightly higher than Beyond).

Klingons were sometimes used as a proxy for being black in the American 80’s

There was one episode where Klingons were raised by humans (white people) and had lost a lot of what it meant I be Klingon.

So of course Worf taught them how to hunt animals with spears

Eh, maybe, but I doubt it.

As long as the locals are implied to be inferior is someway (technological, culturally, etc) it will be seen as racist.

And since the locals have to be inferior for colonizing to work, you will always have this issue.

>In the game Werewolf: The Apocalypse, the Garou (werewolves) were made to defend the earth from the cosmic forces that threaten to tear it apart. The Garou fight against the Wyrm, the destroyer. It is a struggle against nearly insurmountable odds, especially considering the rivalry between many tribes. These rivalries make it almost impossible for the werewolves to present a unified front against a cosmic force that pervades reality.
>From this morass of hatred and mutual betrayal, there is little hope that the Garou can emerge triumphant against a foe so well armed as the Wyrm. The Wyrm promises money, power, sex, and whatever else the heart desires to its followers while the Garou receive no reward for their striving. It drives them deeper and deeper into despair, or into betrayal so deep that they choose to serve the Wyrm instead.

>Fighters were designed only to fight and Rouges were designed to be skill monkeys. Both classes suffered at higher levels due being pigeon holed.
So you think every class should be good at everything? That's shit design.
>>
>>97248962
Every class should be good at something meaningful.
If a class is dropping off, either what they're good at isn't meaningful, or they aren't designed well enough to engage with it.
>>
>>97249089
On that, I agree.
>>
>>97229035
>Letting people multi-class inevitably leads to meta gaming.
And? Building characters around expressing interesting mechanical ideas is fun, and doing so while also coming up with good rp reasons as for why your character is the way they are ironically makes for even better rp since it usually forces players to venture outside of comfortable tropes and come up with more unique character concepts. A Pallock is obviously a very strong meta gaming class combination, but the potential plot hooks of having someone who is torn between their personal honor code and their obligations to their patron are absurdly juicy from a narrative perspective.
>>
>>97248962
Two major issues popped up:
1. Casters just got to be good at everything because "muh magic power fantasy" and the weird autistic need for a spell that could solve any problem, so the caster-martial divide became larger and larger.
2. If the scope of what a character is meant for is limited enough, it leaves the player with a character that's useless in too many aspects of the game. It's not good design to have a class whose only abilities pertain to combat when a massive chunk of the game consists of non-combat things (and as such things the fighting focused class won't be useful in or interesting to play during that down time).
Give casters heavier limits (they should not perform better in combat than fighting focused classes of the same level, they should not be able to just replace a skill monkey in scouting), give all classes more to do in rp heavy social situations and during dungeon crawling, there shouldn't be a class that's completely useless in a major phase of the game.

Yes. All the legions used all the units. I dont believe the Salamanders were famous for their drop assaults, but drop pods are a very core piece of the marine arsenal, its like asking if a given legion used rhinoes or predators.

>So would it be fluffy to throw in a DDP for the Levi?
Absolutely, its what its there for. And the loadout suits the salamander character too.
>>
>>97249504
Sounds good, looking forward to seeing how it turns out! A ball mount for the legs would allow a lot more posing for sure. Could always just roll a ball of putty?
>>
>>97249519
I meant it would look weak. It's cool for an, at-st, or a sentinel or a dreadnought but not a fifty-tonne superstructure.
>>
>>97249350
All dreadnoughts are capable of providing fire support to varying degrees, depending on load out of course.
The castraferrum and contemptor can also be of assistance in melee, especially against big targets like tanks. The leviathan is even more specialised towards this role.
The deredeo is a purely long range fire support platform, whilst the saturnine is more of a mid/short range fire support platform.

>>97249431
People are under-estimating leviathans quite a bit. Phospex discharger has panic 3, that alone will send most Line units running with their tail between their legs. The other ranged weapons also do quite solid damage, decent enough to fire as it closes the distance during a game. Even a full melee leviathan can have two meltaguns, two heavy flamers or twin volkite calivers, and the phospex discharger. More than enough to clean up 10 tacticals.
But the main role that leviathans do well is be too annoying to really ignore, whilst also being too difficult to get rid off easily. A unit locked in combat does not control objectives, so a leviathan standing on/near an objective marker charging anything that comes close, and being generally in the way, is rather obnoxious.
And even with siege claws a leviathan will wreck most vehicles, so dropping one into the opponent's parking lot will also achieve its goal of being a brick shaped distraction carnifex.

I will, because I think third-line should not be a thing at all. We didn't have it before and even Malcadors in Marine lists were said to be third-line tanks by the time of the Heresy, but they didn't bother to enshittify them with extra rules. You could make a provenance for it to represent ramshackle ad hoc formations designed for quantity over quality.

It's still not a top tier army in terms of winning tournaments, but it is the gold standard for what an army should be like in terms of variety and balance. They have are at the perfect sweet spot where they aren't too strong or too weak. They are also fun to play and, imo very importantly, fun to play against. There isn't a whole lot that they do that will feel like complete bullshit to the opponent, unless you're showing up with 9+ Fanatics in which case you can (and should) kindly tell the person to fuck right off.

Orcs & Goblins is imo by far the best army to collect and play in TOW. The only thing the rules writers failed utterly at were Trolls, but if they can bring them in line somehow then the diversity of the range will just go up exponentially.
>>
>>97249124
Theyre kind of disgusting bullshit in TOW. You can tell theyre an army a rules writer played, its like bretonnia.

Just avoid fanatics and black orcs and you should be fine though. TOW is, with some exceptions, fairly balanced as an edition.
>>
>>97249244

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Dragons
Seriously, they're great for domain level play as factions and monsters. No one has used them for enough for so long they feel fresh again too.
>>
>>97249007
Part of the problem with this request is that a T-Rex already canonically has 20 HD in AD&D (and by implication is probably meant to have the same in OD&D), so there aren't a lot of places to go from there. Them and Purple Worms are pretty much the top of the curve of things you can reasonably expect to fight.
>>
>>97249099
>% in Lair: 100% unless encountered randomly
Huh! This single reference seems to imply that the normal understanding of what the % in Lair stat is for is completely wrong. Or did Gygax just forget what he was doing by WG6?
>>
>>97249475
>Part of the problem with this request is that a T-Rex already canonically has 20 HD in AD&D

High-level characters can defeat a T. rex easily. There's definitely room for something bigger.

>>97249482
That's in a module, in which the location of the lair is already given. In that context, I think it just means that if you go to its lair it will be there 100%. (Not something I'd personally do, but I don't think it has any implication for the MM.)
>>
>>97249475
In B/X, dragon turtles have 30 HD, and rocs and whales go up to 36 HD. AD&D rocs and dragon turtles are smaller for some reason, but MM whales can also reach 36 HD, and so does the brachyosaurus. In ACKS, krakens also get 36 HD. I think 36 HD is a good number for monsters that are big and stupid and suitable for domain level play.

>This year however the orks have decided to convert the former colloseum constructed by khorne worshipers in the ruins of a space hulk that crashed here into an arena for a sport they're apparently calling "Blood Bowl."
>I will be attending the first of these games on Candlemass day, which is set to pit greenskins against some surviving khorne worshipers they've captured.
>Emperor willing this will be the beginning of true peace to our world.
>But knowing Candlemass that seams unlikely and I'll be waiting the whole time for some new threat to emerge.

Fair point... how about a hella polluted Hive/Forge world? A jungle of concrete and steel or sorts?
>Picture it: Lakes of toxic waste and hab blocks stacked on top of each other like Kowloon Walled City.

How about a vote?
>Feral World with a Mega-resort
or
>Hive/Forge World known for being polluted and over built?

>Be Lieutenant Abdul Abby of the Tallarn 454th.
>I managed to get a full crew for my Hellhound, along with a crew for two Leman Russes (a Vanquisher and Executioner respectively) and a couple other trooper that just want to tag along (even managed to rope in a kroot) just in time as the Felinids show up with a Chimera offering to transport the crates.
>Their commissar talks with the Repentia Superior for a bit and we decide on the formation:
>My Hellhound takes point.
>The leman Russes at the flanks.
>In the middle we have the Chimera with the hot chocolate being driven by the felinid comissar.
>And surrounding that is the human (and one kroot) guardsmen and Repentia.
>At the rear we have the felinids.
>We make our way through the city without getting attacked so far.
>But given we're about to head into a district that was infected by Nurgle last year and may have some plague zombie stragglers left over that may change.

I vote Forge World. Had a lot of fun the last time we did one and I've got some new ideas.

Also AdMech could use some love in these.
