>>97287769Let's hope neither of us grab a body-double by mistake. Time to ask a favor from Scholar.-Kakophoni
Kakophoni is gonna go speak with Scholar, temporarily get a power boon of Obtenebration and go grab the target using shadow-step to cover ground quickly. Once staked he drops them off. Whether he grabbed the real one or one of her body-doubles is up to Venus' player. I'm trying this style out if it's not good let me know so I can adjust accordingly.
>>97287844 gonna turn in for the night, didn't get sleep last night so passing out early.
>>97287844Venus in Furs would prefer for Kakophoni to attend the briefing and fight guns blazing alongside House Venus and their allies, but ultimately she doesn't give a fuck as long as somebody delivers some results. She's an old enough vampire to know when to look the other way, and there is no problem in having Kakophoni getting some spotlight and doing the loner secret agent thing, especially if Haschke doesn't have any meaningful reason to be necessarily, physically located in either the militia HQ, social centre or drug alley. The Devil Wears Me has a... "very personal reason" to offer this reward and he is very confident he can tell the real thing from a possible fake once he can have a little conversation with this ancient enemy, best if with a thrice blood bound Haschke (who was almost completely drained and just woke up from torpor). If you ask me having stunt doubles around when nazi hunters and photo archives are a thing... isn't the most clever of plans, so I legit didn't think of that.Uncle's objective is and remains to deliver the bitch to the Prince, the reward was just an incentive, and if Kakophoni can do this Navy SEAL copypasta thing to get her, then it's money well spent in his mind.
Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs! Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help: >n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0 >Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128 >Need a starter dungeon? >>97286902>>97286698 (me)Hyperborea definitely shares the bones but it really is its own thing. I actually quite enjoy segmented combat, so it's something I'd likely houserule back into Hyperborea.
>>97286902NAYRT but IMO it makes perfect sense. You can agree that OSRIC is the most faithful AD&D retroclone and still think Hyperborea is the *better* AD&D retroclone. LotFP occupied a very similar niche relative to B/X pre-OSE: I don't think anybody would have argued it was more faithful than Labyrinth Lord. People just liked it better.
>>97287008I think that's a fair point. Though I guess you'd want to qualify what sort of retroclone it is as >>97286631did.
>>97287008Hyperborea is not a retroclone.
>>97287212For sure, I agree.

>>97287744Give her a specific short-term goal that she'll leave after accomplishing. Explain to the players above table that you don't want to run an NPC companion for the whole game, only potentially temporarily if it makes sense for a particular scenario.

>>97287404>Opportunity attacks exist.Warcaster? >You haven't said anything the Bladesinger loses by using a rapier instead of a longsword.Outside of flavor, not really much, you're correct. Using the DEX Weapon is generally recommended for the high DEX + max INT build, but you may want to use a different weapon for character reasons instead.
How would adding a female only paladin order improve your setting?
>>97285712Historically, abbesses wielded real political power, controlled lands, and some could even mint coins or raise troops. You could expand this: make religious orders one of the few paths to education and political influence, creating a parallel power structure. The Church could require female representation in certain councils, or have traditions where certain theological or diplomatic roles are reserved for women.Prolonged conflicts or crusade-equivalents could create precedents where women defend castles, lead forces, or serve as military commanders out of necessity - which then becomes normalized over time.Different inheritance laws make a massive difference. Gavelkind (dividing inheritance among all children) versus primogeniture, or systems where daughters inherit in absence of sons. You could have regions with different legal traditions that create interesting dynamics when noble families intermarry.

>>97287347Cute.
>>97285712you first, detailed & specific
why are many creators so afraid of making a setting with napoleonic wars era technology?
>>97287368Thanks for the suggestions anon.
>>97287345The ACW should never be compared to the Napoleonic war, for one it's half a century later, and the equipment, tech, and weaponry heavily reflect that, but also the troops and officers very significantly less professionally drilled than Napoleonic armies
>>97287345ACW is a different kettle of fish. In Peninsular times, you'd advance into the literal fog of war. You wanted to be sure of the enemy's dispersement, and so if you were faced with a bank of riflesmoke (and occasional fire) it was safer to march in, break up stragglers and hold the ground than it was to sit still and lose men (not to mention becoming a target of cannon, counter charges by cavalry, etc.). This should not be assumed to cover siege/fortification fighting which was a different thing entirely. Plus skirmishers playing by different rules, as it were.By the time of the ACW the infantry's rate of fire was such that only very close charges were advisable. If you marched a unit into a solid defence you lost that unit before they could arrive in close quarters. This is made more true as you move toward WW1 with the more widespread use of machinegun positions.
>>97287447>>97287451ACW was later and the tech differed, yeah, but it's the human element I want to point at in this case, notice I brought up medieval lines as well. You can see that every night in a club, it's not easy to break up even two boys with fists flying. Also, while training is a defining factor in how men behave under stress, the quality of such training was so prone to changing between one battle and another, even inside the same army, that it can hardly be used as a standard of any kind. Napoleon himself kept compalining about troop quality going down, until he fought with a large part of his army as militia at waterloo.
>>97285005Why would they? People don't go around take, say, the 1640s tech and just do a "setting" around that. For that matter, not the tech of 1972 or whatever.
If you could choose the set of core classes (in the PHB/core book and ideally the rest of the classes are designed around them) what would you choose? They don't have to be identical to their current incarnations. For me its,>Ranger, absorbs a lot of the fighter but keeps the independent survivalist schtick.>Paladin, Divine warrior with special abilities but no spells>Rogue,Sneaky stabby martial, basically as he is now>Wizard,>Druid,>Cleric,Default to being lightly armoured wandering friar tuck type character, but with options to put on some armour and bonk.
>>97277187Classes are shit.I run 5e without classes or levelling up for my wife and daughter. They are peasants that get incremental skills abilities and stat increases as their adventure brings it to them. Its great.
>>97277736It's pretty clear that saitama is callious future self, and mr clean is charlie browns future self.
>>97277187I'm surprised how long it took for the first>playing with classespost to appear.Anyhow:Fighter, Thief, Wizard, Cleric, Ranger, BardCleric is of the mace and mail variety rather than the uwu my heals aren't good enough MMO white mage variety, naturally.Race-as-class also acceptable depending on setting.
>>97283278They'd be psions, obviously.
>>97277187Rather than picking classes from a system, it's probably better to just make one's own system.>Warrior, Rogue, Mage, PriestBackgrounds get chosen to add certain things to your starting kit. Less about "classes" and more about character concept. For example, an outlander background makes a warrior into more of a barbarian, turns the rogue into a hunter, a mage into a druid, and a priest into a shaman. A soldier background makes your warrior into more of a soldier (no shit), a rogue into a scout, a mage into a battlemage/war wizard, and your priest into a chaplain. So the game should be less about picking a class to fit a character concept and more about having a character concept and then creating that character with a combination of archtype and background/origin. Want a forbidden dark magic aspect? Take the dark forces background and turn your warrior/rogue/mage/priest into a Blackguard/Cultist/Warlock/Dark Apostle

I'm working on an alchemist class and I'm curious:1. Would you find it more interesting if there were (1) escalating versions of alchemist's fire, dealing 2d6, 3d6, 4d6, etc. or (2) escalating damage items with escalating prices / craft DCs, but they did different damage types instead, or (3) both? Basically if you played an alchemist it'd be like bombs from Pathfinder, except you actually crafted them, but instead of always dealing fire damage, it'd be a set-in-stone thing that the 2d6 ones did, say, electricty, the 3d6 ones did cold, the 4d6 ones did half-fire-half-acid, or something like that.2. How overpowered would it be for a 15th level character to be able to create potions of spells with a range of personal? They also would be able to make potions of spells level 1 to 9, from a limited number of spells "known" for the purposes of making potions out of them. But this would allow them to make potions of any personal-range spell they chose to learn. How broken would this be?
Rolled a dread wraith from PF1 as a random encounter for a night time mission PCs are planning to take.Trying to decide how start it off and how to fight>Option 1 Wraith is smart: hides in the ground on the road, uses life sense to do spring attack as they get in range and hides back into the ground. Keeps doing that, targets them one by one and PCs can only fight back with readied actions>Option 2 Wraith is smart and bloodthirsty: like 1 except rather than hide it flies up above the group, uses its Sense Motive 23 and Spot 23 to id the weakest members of the group and than proceeds to spring attack going for the weakest, trying to generate more spawn>Option 3 Wraith is confident and doesn't bother hiding in ambush because its the scariest thing in the area and it got no one to hide from and none can outrun it, so it hunts in the open. Comes at them fast, does spring attack from the air.>Option 4wraith is cocky, like 3 except it doesn't try go for the weakest first, goes at random to spread the misery around>Option 5wraith is confident but lazy, like 3 but goes after mounts first because it doesn't want the party to try and separate and run>option 6wraith is playful, like 1, only pick targets randomly each timeComment too long. >>97235678>earth is canon in D&D and you can't level up hereWhere are you getting this from? Honestly curious.
>>97287765nta, but the core difference in leveling up in d&d vs real life is permanence. In d&d the skills and attributes you get at level up are permanent and stay with you even if you never use them again.in real life everything degrades rather quickly and its a constant race to keep up which everyone loses with old age.
>>97287636Option 3 would feel the most "fair" to the players, with option 1 being a good step up in difficulty if it feels the need to step up it's game. The issue would mostly be trying to out-damage it before the CON loss does the party in, 184hp with incorporeal defenses is quite a lot to blast through, and once one guy is down it's a wipe>should an incorporeal ghost be prevented from passing through tightly packed living people like that?RAW, Creatures are not Objects, and as such incorporeal creatures do not get a free pass to pass through them. Of course there's several hundred years of fiction depicting such an occurrence, so YMMV
