Christmas is approaching, and so is another licensed choose-your-own-adventure book starring your favourite hedgehog!

ATTENTION MODS - THIS IS NOT A QUEST THREAD, BUT A GAMEBOOK STORYTIME

Okay, now that that's out of the way, let's begin...

No worries, I know how it is to be disappointed by something that's supposed to be fun. My autism simply required me to observe that our "victory"--such as it was--had more legitimacy to it than "let's just pretend we got it".

If only we could pretend the book had been well-written. Kind of understand now why whoever scanned it couldn't be fucked to make sure they hadn't missed any pages.
>>
>>97214134
Sure, I am surprised they made at least 3 of these books.
>>
>>97214267
No worries, the reviews pretty much state this particular book as generally the worst and least satisfying of them.

Doesn't help that the book's whole plotline is basically something we already did as an incremental point within the first book, either.

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.

Pretty much opinion exactly. It was pretty funny though how fast the excitement over 8th (oh thank god, 7th is dead at last!) turned to disappointment as it rapidly turned into its own form of debacle.

If you are an official WotC D&D spot, they require you to buy a bunch of shit for organized play events as well as other odds and ends. Often, there aren't enough players to cover the cost of those OP event materials, so smaller LGS spread the cost to all D&D players by having them all buy table space. Your thought is probably "Why don't they just not be an official spot then?" (Mine was) and that's because you have to agree to be one for X amount of time. You find out your draw is a fraction of what you expected, you still have to keep paying. It's one of those situations where it's best not to get involved with WotC in an official capacity. Games Workshop has some dumb fuck requirements too which is why small stores that start doing WH stuff might have heaps of shit they can't unload because local markets don't want to spend that much on WH stuff but they have to keep buying it anyway.

Gameshops often do better by avoiding getting involved with WotC or GW in any official capacity if they are smaller joints. Then again, game shop owners are usually (not always) some of THE dumbest mother fuckers on the face of the planet.

How do you justify a "pest race" like goblins or rat people in your setting? Why wouldn't the dominant species make a concentrated effort to eradicate them if they were a problem?
28 replies and 3 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>97213989
They live in hard-to-reach tunnels and mostly bother peasants in remote settlements, so they're just not worth it was far as anyone in power is concerned.
>>
>>97214480

In my headcanon they ARE more than a nuisance -quite a monetary loss, at the very least. but the problem is that the land isn't generally as densely poulated (by the good races) to say that a concerned effort can really eradicate them in most cases. Sure, they do cull their numbers, but there's always more.

You end up with rough cycles of goblin explosions and relatively goblin-free years.

>There are actually bumfuckians on this board
>>
>>97213989
It's like trying to eradicate rats if rats were 2ft tall and smart as a retarded human. The civilized races try but the vermin are hard to pin down and reproduce like mad. Take goblins for an example. If a male and a female goblin escape, within ten years there are five more goblins, and twenty years later, they've gone from two to twenty five goblins and are harassing villages again. If they aren't cracked down on, distracting from other, more urgent threats, in thirty years they'll be a dug-in goblin warren, in forty a goblin warband, and in fifty a roving horde of goblins to restart the cycle. In that same timespan two humans can raise ten more humans, and two elves are halfway through their elf-child's education.

The flipside of this is that the trade-off for their fecundity is that goblins are weak, stupid, (if sadistically clever) and too short-lived to amass real professional skill. Any human army will cut down goblins many times their number by the score and do, constantly, to stop the emergence of another goblin tide reaching critical mass. This is not helped by many dark realms subjugating goblins to use them as cannon fodder and a cheap labour source. There is only so much that one shieldwall of twenty spearmen can do against one-hundred goblins led by a necromancer reanimating the dead as they fall. This is where heroes come in, and so on it goes. Many argue goblins are the grease that keeps the gears of evil grinding, and few can argue that they're wrong.
>>
>>97213989
There are efforts to eradicate them, it's just not quite working. There are many reasons why: Goblins are easy to kill but it's almost impossible to get all of them. And it's difficult to organise a force to actually go hunt them, par the course of a decentralised power structure. And the places bothered by goblins tend to be relatively poor rural areas in the first place, so nobody who isn't directly involved cares.

The most effective goblin huntings tend to be privately motivated and funded.

>Hereditary Dictator: The role of dictator is hereditary on this planet. When one person retires, a designated successor, usually a close relative, inherits their position. The successor holds absolute power over the law and their people upon coming of age. This transition is not always peaceful, and rarely seamless.
At some point this family either lost the planet to the Imperium, or lost the planet for the Imperium.

>author adapts his D&D campaign into a well-written, highly-entertaining animated series

Why has nobody done this since?

Man after reading this list I remembered that after reading hundreds of these series it's rare or at least I don't recall any with a satisfying conclusion.
My general feeling for these is that they have a promising, enjoyable start, maybe even conclude the initial premise (first revenge target, first evil abuser/conspirator owned) and then they fall flat or just continue aimlessly slowly fading away.
Not calling out any of these in specific, just my musing based on my experience.

Then again this isn't specific to the genre. It seems like every author has a wet dream of being the next One Piece style never ending slopfest.
>>
>>97214362

Mostly a structural problem with manga and LNs publications.

>>97211438

I don't even think the problem is really the worldbuilding, it's more the "overpowered MC gets pussy for nothing" route that kills interest.

For example, something that had much wrting problems but was an interesting read because it tried offering another perspective was JK Haru wa Isekai de Shoufu ni natta (even if the protagonist was quite a bitch, pun intended).
>>
>>97214362
Most of it's due to their origins as web novels. A large number of them are adapted from Narou, which is basically like the reddit of web publishing for Japan, meaning that trends and upvotes and user engagement are the primary goals to success. Which means you also have all the worst aspects of such a website, such as blatant trend following, in-jokes and site specific culture and cliches abound, and everyone milking any cash cow until they're pulling out blood. All to get noticed for an adaptation and to jumpstart one's career.
>>
>>97194772
>Writing
I mean, it isn't just writing, it's half RNG and half a bunch of writers reacting to the RNG to parse it, which is something incredibly novel for structuring a television script.

What a weird and meaningless dichotomy. The purpose of characters is to beat adventures. I create characters that are built to do that. The "society" is not reral and doesn't matter at all, I don't interact with it when I play RPGs. I have a mission, and I complete that mission, and that's fucking it.

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

Thread #01 Winter Wonderland.

Welcome to /un0/, an RP thread for playing a World of Darkness/Chronicles of Darkness Hunter. For any OOC questions about WoD/CofD, check the official general. >>97089644

Rules:
>We are acephale. There is no storyteller, we are not a quest.
>This thread is based primarily but not exclusively in the nWoD/CofD game Hunter: the Vigil. However, Vigil is defined by being highly setting agnostic, with a system for creating entirely custom monsters that do not exist in other WoD/CofD games. Thus, you have significant freedom in what you want to play and what you want to hunt. Feel free to play a member of the Society of Leopold, or a member of the Lucifuge hot on the tail of a Lasombra.
>Namefagging is encouraged but by no means mandatory.
>Keep in mind that even highly experienced Hunters typically only have fractured pieces of the puzzle, and every table has their own canon. The night is dark and full of misinformation.
>/un0/ is conceived of as an experimental end to end encrypted program that is very hard to compromise, retains very little data and purges that data regularly. Please play an actual Hunter.
>Spoiler any OOC discussion.

Happy hunting.

Careful, it all starts with letting one of them go because "they seem human". Hunting isn't for the mentally weak. Avoid conversation with the vampire. The vampire will lie. The vampire will make excuses. If only the people would open their eyes again, we made them afraid once, we can do it again.

Who said anything about letting one go? Nobody. You can acknowledge someone's humanity while still understanding they need to die. Proper baseline humans like you or me do horrible things all the time without any supernatural assistance. It's childish and cowardly to hide behind the "they aren't people" excuse. They are people. They still gotta die because in order to persist, they regularly engage in something that exists between assault and rape, even if they've never killed an innocent.
