Yes the riddle is easy even without making the connection from nitz to knights which is retarded to begin with because you indicate a short sound i. Make it Nitez or shit. Why would that entire retarded setup even exist? If you don't want your players lockpicking a door don't add a door or add a lethal trap as if someone actually protected that room. A set of reinforced bars with no obvious way in would make the existence of a hidden door near the statues even clearer.

You are reinforcing a behavior on your players that will make them less likely to engage with the riddle anyway. If they wanna use an ability that they chose to learn, in a way that makes sense, don't "gotcha" them with retarded roadblocks. Instead change the challenge. They wanna bash the door in? Now they have to find a way to banish the guardian ghost. They wanna lockpick it? Now they have to deal with a lethal roomtrap. Did they overcome either of them? Now they "earned" their entry by going ahead with the method they chose and have a sense of accomplishment for 'outsmarting' the dm or feel like their character was useful because the way they built it added to the progress of the story.

Once inside you can have them accidentally notice the hidden mechanism and everyone will have a good time about how obvious it was and how they managed to miss it.

Stop being a "no" dm and start being a "yes but..." dm

Last time I used the setting with GURPS, it was spring '19 and we played a campaign set in late early game, basically making bunch of recon missions and light skirmishes (Morganites and Miriam). We played as Gaians, we rolled a copter as the content of the very first pod we were tasked to examine and retreive, so a fuckload of Captain Planet jokes followed now that we had a flying recon vehicle. GM meanwhile simply generated random world and used that for our campaign map.
We moved to using Ubiquity for SMAC right before covid, the crunch fits much better and allows to acknowledge equipment and its quality/advancement, while being far more aimed toward auto-resolution rather than high probability of success (plus no need to re-calculate 3e source book to 4e mechanics)

Littlewars TV is running a campaign of Unternehmen Wintergewitter, the abortive attempt of Von Manstein to relieve the Stalingrad pocket in late 1942. This seems to be a pretty popular topic recently, Donnerschlag from VUCA sims is a hex 'n chit version of this battle.
In any case they have produced a stripped down version of Fistful of TOWs and also this fantastic document with linked scenarios. This is really what I'm looking for in any wargaming ruleset. I fucking hate rulebooks with dozens upon dozens of pages of army lists and special rules but NO scenarios, or just a few generic ones without force compositions. Any recommendations for similar campaign / scenario booklets? Ideally with an overarching goal and decision tree of scenarios like this one?
