On the spectrum of rubber forehead aliens to complete starfish aliens that are made out of silica and breathe methane, where are YOU specificially comfortable with. Does there come a point where an alien becomes too weird for you to "relate" to in order to include them in your games as playable races?

Personally I am fond of aliens that look plausibly like they could have evolved in a different world and have no distinguishable lineage to earth life, even if they share some superficial features.

yeah, that's about the goldilocks zone of alien-ness i'm more inclined towards. though in all RPGs I run I prefer a human or human-like majority party which leaves room for one oddball that pushes it
>>
>>97264811

Should have made them with two pairs of tits (the long torso could clearly accomodate that) ... would have been waaay cooler.
>>
In my book, any kind of alien can work, so long as their tech level is believable. While the Birrin feel like they've been designed with features that only exist for weirdness' sake, it's the natural way their biological quirkiness is presented in mundane scenarios that make them work. It's when an extremely animalistic-looking species has quirks that feel wholly unsuited for using the technology they have that starts to feel weird. Either the tech needs to feel ergonomic for them, or they need to show visible difficulty using it. Despite all this, it's pretty easy to handwave how an alien can use what it's got if it has tentacles.

The game Endless Space 2 has a lot of atypical aliens, like cephalopods forced onto land (Niris), sentient Amoeba gestalt consciousnesses and tardigrade meteorologists (Kalmat), not even mentioning the ones from other dimensions, though many are the result of meddling from another advanced civilization in their development. They might have a single text box worth of exploration into their culture for you to read as the start of a quest, and a civic project you can enact relating to integrating them into your culture. I think the biggest issue I have is the annoying number of the races (especially the major ones) with very cybernetic looking "default" features, and it makes it feel way too on the nose that they were messed with by the titular Endless. Still, I really hope we get something like Star Control for the franchise at some point to more closely explore all the novel ideas the game presents on the macro level. Been thinking to maybe add some elements from the games to a Stars Without Number campaign.

Yes, THEY forced GW to make them look bad because of their agenda to replace white men in the west... >most of the waacfags having been filtered out of the game during its 1st edition launch where the rules werent really concrete
I don't think that actually mattered TOO much, they would've started slipping back in over the editions.
But on the whole you're correct, aos filters out most of the weirdos. I think probably the worst you'll have to deal with are actually the waac, or waac-adjacent types. Yknow the guys that'll stomp a newbie during a teaching game or something. But even though they're the most common type of weirdos in AoS, they're thankfully still quite rare on the whole.

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.

I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.

Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies.

These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence.

This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.

thanks a bunch!

Couple more things, does the game... "flow" well? Is there always different things to do, or is it the usual "activate my strongest unit and shoot the enemy's unactivated strongest unit"?

And can you snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, or if some random bad stuff happens early on, you are just in for 90 minutes of losing right from the start?

And how does the game feel on the table, I mean... most games I have played are on the skirmish level and have that feeling of "this guy is behind this barrel so he gets a cover bonus, meanwhile this guy is aiming for an extra to hit bonus", from the couple of games I have seen SWL is a more "high level" with entire units doing things - which could be fine, but I am worried about the "granularity" of the game... like... like the units being sort of abstracted with the "only move the squad leader" and "everyone does the same thing" and the other models in a unit basically being tokens, window dressing, if that makes sense?

This is one of my pet peeves with 40k, it is a game where the models "don't matter", it feels like in 40k you could draw a couple of blobs/rectangles on paper and just precisely position/measure them in a way to maximize your shots without really having to put models on the table. Especially with competitive table setups it boils down to geometry and math...

>does the game flow well
In my experience, as long as the result of the game isn't a foregone conclusion, absolutely. Playing Legion is almost constant tension, action, rolling, planning and reacting. Every activation can change the state of the game, requiring you to adjust your plans. The only down time in Legion is when your opponent is thinking and when you're moving filler units.
>And can you snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, or if some random bad stuff happens early on, you are just in for 90 minutes of losing right from the start?
You can, definitely. I recently had a game where my opponent killed most of my army, but I managed to win by knocking one of his b1 squads off an objective in the last activation. Or, winning with exactly 1 b1 on the board because I scored more on turns 2-4.
>other models in a unit basically being tokens, window dressing
Nope, where you put your non-leader minis does matter. For one, only minis that can draw line of sight to an enemy can shoot them. Two, you can bodyblock enemy squads and vehicles by spreading out your squads. Furthermore, enemy can only kill as many minis as they can see in their shooting attacks, so hiding your boys can limit enemy killing power.

Trench Raiding With The Lads Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

Fuck off. I’ve asked for links in these threads and multiple others and never seen a fucking thing. Also I see it’s now progressed to a ‘rape’, weird how it started as ‘Trench Crusade fans being edgy spergs’ and has become ‘serious crime’.

For the record I’m Australian with deep connections in the Sydney scene going all the way back to the 90’s (think Atlantis Games on Pitt St before my friend Dennis committed suicide over that cunt Chaedy) and I’ve seen and heard literally nothing about it outside of unsupported claims in these threads.

Had to learn that lesson, especially since IS fun guys are really NOT that good unless you spend big money on them.

You really want Janissary Training on your Captain so they can take Heavy weapons. As is all it's got is an accurate semi-auto rifle/polearm.
Alchemist is fine, sniper is a good stop gap until you can get a Masterwork Jezzail.
Shotgun/Shield Azebs are an option, but their main strength is the cheap Jezzail/Alch Ammo loadout.
You also want to squeeze a muscial instrument Azeb in there somewhere as Dashes can win games.
Jannies are fine, although they can take a Heavy melee weapon as they're Strong.
And yeah Murad Bull is a trap as it's not a good shot. The Flamecannon however is an absolute menace. And with how much you need to spend on a Bull, you really want to have it from the start and get it promoted ASAP.

I've seen people run Mario Kart with it. Ironically, I think races are what Gaslands is worst at, because rarely does anyone actually finish the race. It's a huge collision clusterfuck right at the start, then weapons come online and the idea of actually racing goes out the window. I much prefer deathmatches or some of the arena types with goals to accomplish.

I largely found the opposite. Races had several viable approaches including smashing everything immediately, dashing to the first gate and opening fire, and racing off into the sunset. Deathmatch games don't give much hope to light, speedy teams. Flag Tag mostly went too far the other way as a couple of buggies could usually rush some flags while a heavier team had barely got started. And Saturday Night Live was hugely sponsor dependent.

the paid dm defenders have always said they help people with no friends, but the last few months they are being promoted as

I'm part of a couple shop owner groups and the charging to be part of a DND group seems to be getting more common, some fees are up to $30 per player per session. The cherry on top is one store owner bragging how he sells what is essentially pay to win packs during Christmas time, this netted him $10k. IDK what cuck would want to be part of pay to win DND but they deserve to be had at that point.
>>
>>97268601
I know a paid GM. He charges 30 or 35 bucks per player per session (5 to 8 hours). Considering a cinema ticket costs 22 bucks in his country, I don't find this excessive. He also dedicates one room of his apartment for that (sessions are irl), and invested in a light and sound system, plus some kind of a screen system for battlemaps, etc. From what I've heard, he's really invested in the campaigns and in the character development. Personally, I wouldn't pay for a GM, but I can understand that it might appeal to people with enough disposable income.

2025 games are too new to judge. A lot of these have not hit the wide market yet.
If we look at 2022 and 2023:
>2022
JC 2nd and GoA II were a later hit.
Big names from the time that are probably forgotten or less popular now are: Carnagie, Tiletum, GWT Argentina, Endless winter, Flamecraft, Libertalia 2ed, Lacrimosa, Weather machine, Mosaic, Ahoy, Encyclopedia, Cat in the box...
>2023
Horseless Carriage was forgotten but the wide availability and price drop have seem to given it second wind.
Others: Bloodstones, ICE, Darwins Journey, Nucleum, Distilled, Apiary, Expeditions, Kutna Hora, Daybreak, Evacuation, The fox experiment, Septima, Arborea, Last light....

Maybe I'm wrong and these are still widely played? But there might also be more, do people still play Earth, Vale of eternity, Age of innovation, Sky team?
>>
>>97270384
Pretty sure people still play a ton of sky team, it's continuously on top of the sales lists. And AoI mide not have made that much splash bg wide but is very beloved by the deeper TM community. Earth, however, can not be forgotten fast enough. That game still annoys me.

Also good lists, most of them have very much faded from memory indeed.

Then I cured it, scratched it up with sandpaper and started painted in from the edges with layers of very watered down Lothern blue. Finally I dry brushed white along the edges and added some Valhallan blizzard technical snow.

Welcome to the New School Revolution General, the thread dedicated to games derived from the OSR movement.

>What is NSR?
>NSR is a subcategory of the OSR, it mostly follows the same play style but experiments further with the mechanics and settings.
>Broadly NSR games have a gm, a living world, are rules light, deadly and focus on emergent narrative, interaction and exploration.

>What is this thread NOT for?
Meta discussions or drama of the games and its creators aka shadowboxing with twitter, reddit and the OSRG (frens with osrbros)
>stay on topic

>games
Shadowdark, into the odd, mausritter, cairn, mörk borg (and its hacks), dungeon crawl classics, mothership, knave, troika!, whitehack, blackhack, old school essentials (we know this is just a retroclone), etc.
>links, resources, more games!, etc:

Honestly Mork Borg is pretty fun as long as you take it as intended, i.e. not seriously. Cairn is absolute dogshit for attention-starved redditors though.

why? i only recently started reading up on osr and nsr stuff and cairn gets talked about pretty often

Cairn's fine, he's just being hyperbolic. Its main sin is lacking a distinct 'identity'. I prefer Errant as an evolved version of Cairn btw
