Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:>n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128>Need a starter dungeon? >>97223411We place objective markers before deployment map, yes. We just also place objectives where there's not going to be any instant-victories if the right deployment map is rolled (early on we had too many games end immediately because we place 2 objectives in immediate range of where a DZ ended up being, and only 1 in the other with another 1 in no man's land). The center point of the objective can't be in the Deployment zone but the 3" area that you score within can. So yes, they are technically in no man's land but not in a meaningful way.To me it sounds like you're not really playing against shooting lists? if land raiders are "far from guaranteed" from getting killed. I'm losing a Spartan and half or more of the cataphractii inside turn 1 any time I deploy it in view/get 1st turn and move it forward. I've lost a Spartan and Typhon in turn 1 before.

>>97223577How do you envision him doing that? He was in a worse position. Even their own legions weren't 100% on board with their plans and required culling. A lot of rebellions were just local forces desiring independence or smaller warlords taking the opportunity to forge their own little empires, rather than being loyal to Horus. Him taking out the one thing that held the Imperium together was better. Considering the Emperor is both keeping Terra from becoming a daemon world and protecting humanity from becoming daemon spawns, taking Him out would've been way better for Chaos than a systematic war of conquest on all fronts. Without the Emperor and Terra, the Imperium would fracture and whatever empires rose to take its place would not be as unified.

Why does lichdom exist when you can just clone yourself in 5e?
>>97223626Because your clone living on isn't the same as your consciousness continuing.
>>97223626In addition to the continuity question >>97223655 poses which is quite difficult and generally costly to answer (which varies by edition, which is in-universe split between obtuse changes in how magic functions and versions of the spell), lichdom makes you a lot harder to put down in the first place, brings you back faster, for as many times as you can get away with for a single up-front cost, and actually "solves" aging fully.
I haven't kept up with 40k lore in a long while but I just found out that they brought this guy back for no real reason and I find it really cringe. What I liked about the old lore was that humanity was in decline, the Imperium that once was is a long distant memory, the heroics of the past is shoruded in uncertainty and ambiguity and all that remains is the rot and decay. Now we have a dude from the past that has just come back and he is totally badass and cool and is gonna fix everything and also any ambiguity that makes the past mysterious and interesting is now gone because there are people alive who can backup what happened. It feels less grimdark and more marvel super hero shit. I don't really like it.
>>97222222HOLY, witnessed
>>97222222BASED KILL ALL FAGHAMMER FAGS
Ironically, bringing Guilliman and Lion back is the most pro-fascist movement they could take. No longer are the problems of the Imperium due to their totalitarian ways. No longer is the decay caused by their dogma and their superstition. They just needed a Big Man. A true Superhuman Leader chosen by God Himself, that with an Iron Will and a Wise Mind slashes the rotting bureaucracy powered by mere humans. Mankind cannot rule itself without the paternal guide of the Primarchs. Horus was right all along.
>>97222222Can't argue with those digits
>>97223404The whole point of the Imperium was that even the most objectively justified fascism results in an absolute shithole of a state and society. Whether you agree or disagree with that view is irrelevant - giving the Imperium a hopeful way forward by leaning in to fascist philosophy is a direct contradiction of the point they've been trying to make for thirty years. It's as stupid as the Tyranids suddenly deciding that they're full.

>>97223126not that anonI used to play go, but it's just slow as hell compared to chess. You don't have 4-10 move checkmate tricks there, or the equivalent of 1 minute bullet games. Have you tried Space Gits? It's an unusual skirmish game by Mike Hutchinson (made Gaslands). It seems to be the ultimate casual skirmish that you play while chugging beer.A lot of mechanics are dexterity based, for example instead of losing health or wounds, your fighters add D6's to their dice tower, which has to be moved alongside them (and when it drops over, they drop down). Shooting is also quirky - you roll dice equal to the number of shots and then trace lines between a shooter and each die to see if you hit the target. Landed shots use die's result, so a single roll is made to-hit and to-wound, which I think is neat.I'm going to try it this thursday. My only two complaints so far is that close combat seems bland (its basically rock-paper-scissors) and it's really easy to deny it by spamming shove. My other complaint is that the rulebook's art is atrocious vomit.Everything else checks out though, it even seem to have a basic campaign system.
>>97222132>mindbroken by GW
>>97222076Seems overly gimicky but fun once or twice. Dexterity based games tend to be cute in concept but most of the fat nerds playing them are very bad at it and get weird, and then one guy is very good at it and gets weird. >ultimate xyz>chugging beer makes you sound like marketing.
