>Cyberpunk 2020 vs. Cyberpunk RED?
Cyberpunk 2020 is the second edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that focuses on simulation gameplay and has a black trenchcoat aesthetic.

Cyberpunk RED is the fourth edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that is set after Cyberpunk 2020 following the Fourth Corporate War, focuses on more balanced gameplay and is more streamlined but has less content.

You can discuss Shadowrun here too because I also feel bad for those guys.

There's this idea that there's a barrier to popularity in complexity; and that the simpler a game is the more money it's going to make. Not only is this completely wrong, they're often stupidly tearing out most of the interesting systems and mechanics and leaving behind dull ones because they weren't complicated.

RED thankfully didn't make this mistake, not entirely. It's simpler, but there's plenty going on to keep people interested without also being in modifier hell (though I feel a lot of GMs I've played with are terrified of applying circumstantial modifiers, so it's whatever). There are other flaws in the system, but the bones are good and you can build it up where it needs bulk.
>>
>>97222039
tbf Red does try it's hand at more narrative style gameplay. Rockerboy and Media have very wishy washy abilities open to interpretation.

Also Red does try to limit crunch by making the combat and character building very simple.
>>
>>97222172
Well those are two roles that would be very unsatisfying if you made them much more granular. That said they're not quite as insubstantial as they seem.

Charismatic Impact is actually crunchier than it might immediately appear; I just find GMs don't tend to pay enough attention and can sometimes make it work like mind control. Broadly its a way to scattershot assistance wherever you go; unlike Backup or an Exec's Teamwork, you can run into fans anywhere and you don't have to drag them with you. Even at rank 4 there's more going on than it would appear: Being able to play at well known Clubs necessarily gets you into all the well known club, and you're one rank away from necessarily being able to play (and thus enter) any club that's not explicitly exclusive. Otherwise you're building effectively a contact list as you make fans and can shake them down weekly (figuratively) for favors, which has the rules breakdown of "I have an ever increasing pool of NPCs that I get a favorable social roll on to just have them do shit for me". Use that smartly, and you're going to have the rockstar treatment wherever you go in the most literal sense of the word.

Similarly, Credibility has some bite to it if the GM will just play it right. Passive rumors go automatically, so the GM should be keeping you connected and assuming he's not feeding you bullshit intentionally, something is going to be useful. Even if it's not, publishing can work a variety of ways to your advantage more than just having a magazine. You can 'publish' to individual people or organizations and what you publish doesn't even need to be true. It's definitely more fluffy than all the others and more nebulous than Charismatic Impact though.
>>
>>97215169
How the hell does this thing fly?
>>97222245
A good Referee can make Credibility the most influential ability in the game.
>>
>>97222245
It's not about being "granular," it's about giving those roles something to do outside of their vague ass narrative powers.

>Corvus Belli sticks with their core audience, and was mired in old material which kept newer players away, while also actively working against the english speaking market until very recently

Infinity is also more than 2x the price of GW for similar boxes for mostly metals. £72 for a box of 10 guys is pretty offputting.
>>
>>97221959
Isengard battlehost for MESBG is like £50 for 47 dudes. 606 pts in the box.
The fellowship is £32 for 9 dudes, and worth like 1000 pts if run all together.

A large game of MESBG is 800 points, but matches from 500 up to 800 are viable. 600 is a pretty decent spot and a single starter box puts you there. Not to even mention the game has been around forever and its really easy to find minis for it second hand from like 20 years ago.
And the rules are miles better than 40k.
>>

thank you based marinepiggies for funding my warcry guys
>>
>>97222456
It's really fucking weird cause it seems like not only are their other games cheaper than 40k (except maybe 30k) but the rules seem more solid. Like Necromunda is relatively affordable, especially so if you get the rules online. Blood Bowl is even cheaper than MSBG and you can just buy teams on your own and lend to your friends. Even Old World is cheaper than 40k for some reason.

Why is it that so many fantasy writers make their evil cults unjoinable by anyone with a functioning brain cell? Like why would you worship Orcus, whose goal is omnicide? Why would you worship Tzeentch if he’s probably gonna screw YOU over as part of his grand plan?

What makes it so bizarre to me is that, firstly, it’s not like they need to be so off-putting to be evil. Orcus is a demon of undeath, his followers want to turn their enemies into the undead. Tzeentch wants the world to be in a constant cycle of chaos, his followers are gonna be masterminding world wars.

Secondly, it’s not like we don’t have plenty of examples of real-world evil cults. A lot of cults in the West don’t follow Super-Duper-Mega-Murder Satan, but are fucked-up offshoots of Christianity. Historically, goetia was practiced by people who would’ve still called themselves Christians, while committing rituals to summon and get boons from demons. Plenty of human cultures used to sacrifice humans to their gods, not to summon them to kill everyone or some shit, but to honor and/or appease them.

Like to use another example from Warhammer, I think Nurgle and Khorne present more “approachable” evil cults. Nurgle is toxic positivity, and his love will take all the pain away. Khorne is wrapped up in enough language about honor to lure people in.

Like to rework an evil deity, let’s pick Lamashtu. Instead of “We love ugliness and miscarriages and also you get to die in childbirth”, the cult targets vulnerable young women and lures them in with divine feminine language (“You have the power to bear and raise great beasts”), while promising the young men of monstrous races frustrated living among humans that what they’re scorned for is what makes them powerful (and also they get to have sex with pretty girls).

As someone from a third world shithole I would unironically appeal to Tzeentch if that meant a plausible way to tear down the people in power here and change the general culture of the people around here
>>
>>97206207
Yeah, makes the whole chaos cult thing seem reasonable. A prospective cultist suffering from insecurities to delusions wold easily fall for the whole "There's nothing wrong with you, it's the world that has to change!" drivel that these types cling on to for dear life.
>>
>>97207451
The Chaos Gods draw power from pretty much any emotion, good or evil, but in its concentrated form, the Warp always takes things to extremes, so pretty much the only time you get "good" aspects of Chaos is in cultures that have minimal exposure to the Warp

>you won't be prepared for when players do the unexpected
What players can do will ideally be covered by the rules of the game (see: "the character creation and progression options, the challenges they face, and the mechanics associated with the game structure" that you ignored).
If not, that's on you for choosing (or making) a poorly designed game; it does not suddenly make worldbuilding more important to a game than it actually is.

>making contradictory and disjointed decisions that don't fit what's already been offered
A well-designed game won't contradict itself in how it runs. When choosing or making a game, make sure it is clear about what can be done with it. "Games" that don't have mechanics beyond "ask your storyteller" are more likely to be disjointed than something with airtight rules.

>when we're flying by the seat of our pants due to lack of appropriate forethought into the world
"Flying by the seat of your pants" is the consequence of a poorly designed game, or a system that isn't even a game at all.
When there's proper forethought in the mechanics, everything else falls into place.

Perhaps try designing a game to run, instead of trying to write novels or performing improv theater. You'll realize that games don't need as much masturbatory worldbuilding when you do.

But once again, you just want to have your off-topic collaborative writing with impunity, despite there being multiple other places for you to plop out your shit.

>The idea of a gnoll working in forge with that fur next to burning fires, sounds like a safety hazard about to happen
True, but at that point you'd need to question how safe it is for Dwarves too, considering they're generally depicted as both master smiths and having huge beards. Having metal rings and beads braided in those big beards probably wouldn't help either.
>>
>>97217789
>>97222374
Shrimple. Dwarves and most furred races capable of metalsmithing will put fire-retardant conditioning in their hair/fur.

The gnoll working alongside a dwarf would likely adopt this from his dwarven friend because gnolls probably don't have a sophisticated metalworking culture (though they might, in this particular setting..). Most other Gnolls would note that he smells faintly of dwarf in a more complete manner than the "hung out with dwarves" way.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Is OSE easier to DM/play as a newbie? I tried 5E and it seemed kinda autistic for my non-dork buddies.
>>
>>97222378
We have n00b guides to help you get started, links in the OP.

B/X is very procedural at its core, and much simpler than 5e from practically all points of view. It takes 5 minutes to create a character and, generally speaking, players don't even need to know the rules to play, unlike 5e that is all about character optimisation, character builds, and knowing which class or race power to use when or what feats to take. There's a learning curve to it as a DM, but it's very resilient if you fuck up some rules or make shit up for the first few sessions.

5e DMs complain about burnout all the time, but that's unheard of in Gygaxian D&D, in which DM'ing is loads of fun.

5e is mostly written to titillate the players' power fantasies and for DMs who have always wanted to write novels but were unable to, we despise both here. Gygaxian D&D, on the other hand, was written for DMs to have fun with. There was literally a shift in the target demographics of games and the whole game's philosophy after Gygax left TSR in this regard.

It was for literal children to learn to play before computers and the Internet were a thing. Granted, there's been some quite substantial neurological decline in the younger generations since 1981, so it might be a bit more challenging for you than it was for gen X kids back then, but I'm sure you can manage.

Those puzzle pieces are completely backwards. They imply the female has a cock and the guy is on the front end of a fuck train.

In reality, the male should be fucking the hermaphrodite to extract her yan while also supplying her with his own sperm to rebalance the yang she's expending dumping cum into the female. Only then will true balance be achieved

I would just say you get neither because when confined to the same vessel the powers negate each other.

Why is it so common for fantasy rpgs that try to do the "Deep Lore" stuff to always default to Gnosticism or H.P. Lovecraft in a trench coat?

Simulation theory was implied in both Star Ocean 1 and 2. The problem with 3 was that they tried to turn it into a mid-game twist and that made a mess of the game's story.

White Wolf's games are heavily rooted in Christian mythology and Gnosticism is basically Christianity/Judaism deep lore, so it really should come as no surprise here.
But yeah, sure, I get what you're saying, seen plenty of it as well.

I think it's largely because the core themes of Gnosticism are
>reality isn't exactly what it appears to be
>god(s) are lying to you
While the core them of HPL is
>there are forces/entities/civilisations out there that operate on an entirely different level we can barely comprehend
And those really are kind of the most obvious angles if you're trying to write some major, plot-twist "deep lore" for your setting

Another reason I see is there's probably a pretty big correlation between people who are into the concept of deep lore (and thus want to include it in their setting) and people who are into /x/ stuff (and thus are probably aware of Gnostic stuff and think it's some extra cool secret knowledge they'll be extremely original for ripping off)
