GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image (follow the URL to get to a folder with some files, read the files to get to the archive). Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: What is your opinion on the art in GURPS books?

I think replacing the standard magic system with a more generic and maybe flexible system like Sorcery or RPM would have been better for the basic set and would have used a similar page count to the existing magic chapter. Two different systems might be excessive.
But RPM wasn't available when the Basic Set was written and I don't think they had even really figured out how to manage powers to make a powers-based magic system which didn't suck at that time. The only really good magic system they had was Spirit Magic (precursor to Path & Book) and that isn't generic enough.
As for spaceships, you could probably get away with one page of ship stats and a couple of pages of space combat / travel rules, rather than a whole design system. But again, they hadn't really figured out all that stuff at the time and the people who could write it (i.e. Dave Pulver) were busy doing the main rules.
>>
>>96502285
Problem is that RPM is less suitable for "generic fantasy" type games, so I can see why they'd have the default system in the Basic Set.
>>
>>96502026
>The only other system I can think of that "deserves" so much to be in the basic set is the spaceships system
The one system that needs to be in a future Basic Set is definitely the Chase rules from Action.

am I being stupid, or are the extra rules in DF16 just "here are more places to make Survival and similar skill checks" ?

not at all

but it's an understated fact that keeping a consistent palette (black&white being an easy one) helps in making artworks that are heterogeneous in style and quality feel part of the same atmosphere more than having the same artworks be different in palettes as well

furthermore, black and white artworks were usually traditional artworks, so generally done on a higher payroll and created over longer timeframes, and a result, of a higher quality

Writing General: 'summer days' edition

Welcome to /wg/, the thread for all /tg/ related writing. Whether you're plotting your campaign, trying to come up with a character backstory, or just trying to write some setting fluff, this is the place to post it. You don't even have a campaign, just an idea you want to develop? You're welcome here. While the rest of /tg/ is arguing over monstergirl mating and which way rivers are supposed to flow, we're here to help you turn your thoughts into an actual finished product.

As the successor to the Storythreads, we're also open to /tg/ related fanfiction (D&D, Warhammer, Battletech, whatever). In fact, if you've written any vaguely /tg/-related short stories, you can try them out here. We also have flash-fiction challenges from time to time.

There's a discord for writers here
https://discord.gg/6AwKHGF

The previous thread can still be found in the archive here
>>95441002

And finally an archive of /tg/ fiction can be found here:
http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Storythread (dead link, but may be resurrected one day)

Don't worry. It's the sixth novel I'm working on. This project has been a lot of fun so far. Never worked on something vampire-related and can't really say that I have been hugely into this topic before as well. But it's a timeless classic, and still so much you can do with it.

>All the weird sproingy gas weapons are still weird though.
Agreed. I'm sure it must be explained somewhere. Let me check the Japanese wikipedia page...

"Various parts are fitted with compressed gas cartridge drums (each containing 16 cartridges) and these are used to enable the Wire Arms and the Leg Anchors. Another mechanism allows the knee armor to extend like an arm punch during a knee smash (!!!). They are also equipped with airbags in case of a failed landing (judging from the depiction in the movie, they are disposable and appear to be activated using compressed gas cartridges)."

"Armed with a gun which is a combination of a gas cartridge drum and an iron pipe. The gun uses the explosive power of a gas cartridge to fire another gas cartridge as a warhead, so two cartridges are used to fire one shot. (This means that a 16-round drum provides eight shots.) These guns are not built for combat, they're just equipment for repelling Termites."

There's no mention of the compressed gas being used as the "hydraulic fluid" for the motive cylinders, nor does it mention the gas being used as fuel for the power generator, but I'd guess those are both true as well...?

There's a good couple of anons here that are objectively good. Hell even this very thread has some very solid pieces/wips posted. That anon put 150 hours into that bust though, of course it's going to be a cut above everything else. Most advice here is usually good and bad is shot down pretty quickly, based on that I think the solid painters also participate in the discussion and give feedback. At least I hope so. Anyway it's not like we're competing with each other here or anything and learning from your betters is one of the best ways to improve, why would I be jealous or annoyed? I'm actually very happy we have good painters here.
>>
>>96503196
I drill them in multiple passes because it's easier to fix the issues incrementally, and easier to center with smaller drill bits.
>>
>>96503240
hmm I will try and drill another tiny one more centered and then use a bigger one to smooth it out.
>>
>>96503213
Counterpoint: I could put put 150 hours into a bust and it would probably look mid as fuck. It would probably look okay at 20 hours, and then progressively worse and messier from 20 to 150 hours.

I think he's referring to this

I have been playing and running Draw Steel's playtest since August of last year, and have since moved on to the release version. I recently ran a brief level 5 game. This is my play report: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Be1a7GJ1gjK7SqYQWZmxA2Tx_nIF6vRcTNqOKuUUQ3g/edit

The full version is above, but to summarize:

• I had four players. One had already played the system a fair bit, and had experience with grid-based tactical games like D&D 4e and ICON. The other three were new, but also had experience with tactical games.

• I set this in the timescape's space-fantasy upper worlds, in a UNISOL-aligned manifold. The story began with a counterattack on the fleet of Lord Syuul, and culminated in delving into the minds of two Space Gods to save a planetary system.

• I kept basic numerical statistics transparent, but enemy traits and abilities opaque.

• Negotiations were received poorly by the players. They felt too rote (uncover, appeal, uncover, appeal, repeat), and it quickly became evident that some PCs should just step back and let the characters with relevant perma-edges (e.g. High Elf Glamor) handle everything.

• Montages had a somewhat better reception, but the players still were not too warm on them. They just do not like 4e-style skill challenges.

• Combat was the most well-received facet of the system. The consensus seemed to be "decent, would definitely play again, but nothing special compared to other grid-based tactical games we have already played."

You might. I give it even odds you commit suicide first.
>>
>>96503004
Why would I commit suicide?

So it looks like this game has a paladin/inquisitor type, a barbarian, a rogue, a bard, a monk that fucks with casters, a blaster mage, and a tactical fighter dude. That's kind of cool. Too bad it's fallen for the meme of "let's give you arrays and shit to build your character's ability scores slowly so that it's more balanced, but you also choke the fuck out of character customization"
>b-b-b-but character customization is actually.... LE BAD!!! because of coffeelock and punpun the kobold and stuff
Then your game is terribly designed.

Also looks like healing surges are back... cool, just stack the game with metacurrency right from the get-go. Everyone works off 4e's bizarre framework (including 5e) because it was a formalization of the 3.5e "adventuring day" which tried to force a structure of play that didn't need to exist. Now we are expected to run 8 encounters a day and none of them are challenging, just powerwanks for the PCs until they get tired and have to take a nap. And then adding in healing surges for false tension so you get close to 0 hp in every fight, but aren't actually significantly getting hurt.

Really retarded structure and the auto-hitting is fucking stupid too. Just looking at the orcs where they tromp around the battlefield and deal 4 damage to everyone automatically, is just laughable. This game literally looks like one of those cartoon mobile games you get ad-spam for, that was probably vibe-coded by jeets with AI.
>>
>>96502999
Your character sits at a table with Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin, ready for the kind of negotiations that you have spent your life preparing for. The war has been long but this is your time to bring it to a close. The life and death of hundreds of thousands hang in the balance. The livelihood of millions rests in your hands. Roll a d20. Ok you got a 16. War is over.

Because they're gene-modified humans.
>Why in the fuck would the Votann waste precious biological budget making differentiations between the sexes when sex has no function for the kin?
Because it's already in the blueprint and taking it out would be more trouble than it's worth. Also, there are times when natural childmaking is necessary (such as for frontier outposts that are too far away to get regular reinforcements and don't have a Votann of their own, and there are MANY outposts and only a few Votann holds). There's also the roving trade and mining fleets that don't return home for centuries at a time, and not all of them have a Votann in their flagship to handle reproduction for them.

Alright /3dpg/, I need advice

I recently bought some 3D printed models. The owner made the mistake of hollowing them out but he didn't put any drainage holes.

So now I have ten models that have liquid resin inside. It's been some months and two of them have already started leaking liquid resin in places.

I have a hand drill, but I also have a printer myself.
Could I save the models by manually drilling holes in all of them and draining them by hand, potentially making a mess? Or should I just throw them away and print them myself? I've already been refunded the money so either option is fine by me.

Pic unrelated

>>96502936
>Could I save the models by manually drilling holes in all of them and draining them by hand
I did this with some stuff I didn't realize had voids until afterwards.
Worked pretty well but did make a mess. I did it with the models submerged in IPA.
>>
>>96503000
What size would you recommend for the drill? Will it all drain out with just 1mm diameter?
>>
>>96503082
Might work. I would go a little bigger but it depends on what part of the model you are drilling into. Aim for the biggest void area.

Just use a small size then go up if you need to. If it doesn't drain enough go bigger.
