Why do most sci-fi settings sideline space combat but instead mostly focus on ground warfare?

>I wish our real Moon landing had been as unhinged as Perry "Mind Control is not yet a war crime" Rhodan's.
How was it?
>>
>>96534903
That's the bottom end of lasers, dummy. Imagine laserstars with 10m mirrors and gigawatt outputs as the middle. Then towards the higher end, mirror networks throughout the solar system for transport whose military purposes are more of a side effect of cheap travel; like navies and commercial shipping fleets. Instead of isolated frontier colonies on Neptune colonists will be able to order Amazon Prime Space Edition and get parcels delivered in a blaze of plasma as lasers turn ice to reaction mass.

Sure you can have other weapons. Militaries do that today. They have microwave guns, jammers, batons, nukes...but face it, 99% of the fighting gets done with a single weapon class of explosives, gunpowder, and hydrocarbons.
>>
>>96535041
Main character does the first Moon landing during the cold war, finds an alien space ship there, takes all of the mind control rays and then fucks off to Nevada and builds a city within a shield sphere to end the Cold War through superior firepower. He gets supplies and funds by mind controlling innocents and causing implied tragedies that no one cares about.
The space ship was manned, by the way, but the aliens put up no resistance to his plans because their species spent too much time playing videogames and has become uninterested in existing. Please note that this was written in 1961, before videogames were even a thing.

Later on he recruits the entirety of all espers across the planet, defeats some kind of shadowy esper mastermind and flies off into space to meet the creators of the space ship and steal their tech.
He also encounters a bored ascended entity, which grants him immortality as long as he continues being interesting.

This is four or so books in. There's more than 150 currently. She story is still ongoing.
Apparently later on the main characters ascend into a hivemind or something.

"Lost Fleet" is kinda that. Combat is absolutely brutal, with ships going at a good chunk of the speed of light and wrecking each other with kinetic and energy weapons.
>>96509359
Personally I was always more of a fan of how Crest of the Stars presents space combat. Author is also more of an autist than LoGH one - he actually made a whole artificial language for his books and carefully crafted all the tech. The only really impossible thing is FTL drive if I remember right. Every other weapon and technology is at least theoretically possible.
>>
>>96535214
Lafier's books also have gravity control technology and use positron beams as standard weaponry on ships. Also Crest's realspace combat is relatively sparse, it's mostly all 2D with a fuckload of complications because they do it in the subspace.

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

I've played it a few times, it's perfectly serviceable, nothing special but definitely fun if you've got a likeminded buddy
>>
>>96534462
You should be able to use bigger models alongside HG, but infantry is too small. They need to be something like half a time again as tall to work. Unless you count them as hobbits.
>>
>>96533403
>I can convince them

You dont need to convince them, you just give them (enough) money, and they make any set you want. And you'd even get a percentage of every sold box, which is why those commissioned sets are always a bit more expensive than their inhouse sets. (see Spacenam, Quar etc).

You mean the HG infantry are too small or the EW infantry are too small? I've heard the EW minis are tall but thin while the HG infantry are short but chunky.
15mm minis are probably right out though, unless you want tiny aliens.

>What do you need to get started with frostgrave other than a warband or two
It depends. You can get by with a pretty small collection. My recommendations (this will get you a reasonably complete setup for <$100)-
>Frostgrave Undead packs from Mantic
These are just a couple sprues of skeletons, and one each of Ghouls and Zombies. Very, very cheap for what you get. Next cheapest is buying a sprue each of Zeds and Skellies from a Wargames Atlantic reseller like Recreational Conflict
>Reaper Animal Companions 5, wolf pack, and Giant Rats
Gets you a bear, a leopard, multiple wolves, and a wolverine you can use as a Frost Toad plus six cheap rats for ~$25
>Your choice of two trolls/ogres from Ral Partha Europe or Reaper
Can substitute for any of the Big Guys
>Wargames Atlantic Dark Age Irish (1 sprue)
Gets you a small pack of wild or tame dogs and Barbarians (you can also use the Barbarians as Beastmen/Gnolls, Rangifer, etc. as you move through modules). North Star Tribals are another good choice here. They just don't have the extra dogs
>Any manufacturer (Nolzurs will be cheapest)
A Vampire, Mummy, or similarly powerful Undead model, a large Genie/demon, some man-sized demons, a werewolf, and a couple of Imps or cherubs.
For one of the scenarios you need six Constructs; the easiest way is painting up minis you don't want as statues. All of mine came out of the broken/missing parts bin at my LGS for $1.

One month for the normal release, 6+ months for the spearhead, just like Gitmob and Skellies, and Seraphon and every other Army Box. Trust me, I know these things.

The CoS armybox was kinda lame, like you need Steelhelms but they're the worst looking and least useful unit in the (refreshed) army and that was most of the box.
>>
>>96535198
thats not gonna happen. they're not gonna delay the armies spearhead to almost the end of the edition
They will. They always do. They literally did it with CoS not long ago, released the spearhead in April 2024 just a few months before the edition drop. They released the Darkoath spearhead AFTER the edition drop.

Honestly, the six to eight month policy is already GW being generous. New armies like LRL and OBR had to wait eons for their first SC/Spearhead box.

Did you fail to quote the part where I said they live on the other side of the country or does that part not exist? :^)
>>
>>96534844
...Do you think people on the east coast don't exist or something?
Besides, it has less to do with geographic location and more to do with social distance. The guy running your country is more or less a complete stranger to you, their interactions are entirely impersonal, unless you know them personally in which it's a moot point.
>>
>>96535143
Oh what's that, still no quote? Lmfao
>B-but your leaders are all complete strangers to you!
So a high trust society is when you presume complete strangers to be pedophiles lol.
>>
>>96535154
Are you physically incapable of taking wider content into account or are you just a pedantic nitwit?
The point I made about high trust societies is that you can assume that the people you don't really know aren't so incompetent that you can't so much as go to the grocery store and buy food without getting food poisoning or without the stocks being empty, or that you can't walk around your neighborhood without getting shot.
When society starts to break down, when leaders get saxked for being kid diddlers or sex offenders or satanists or glowie enablers or whatever else you wanna disapprove of, that trust gets eroded away. But there can only be the disappointment and diminishing of said trust if it existed in the first place.
You seem to be applying the logic of "well high trust societies mean you just assume everyone is good" which is true, but you're ignoring the part where if they prove not to be then they get excluded and shunned from it. Believe it or not people do in fact want to be around and want to be represented by people who are plesant and not despicably evil.

You want a low trust society look at the jungles of Africa with their warlords who rape the natives and shoot up each other on the regular. Things like grocery stores and schools don't exist there.

>What this thread is for:
/tg/ gets shit done again and is creating a “Battle Bible” (Ala 2nd edition) for 4th edition Warhammer 40k.
>What this thread isn’t for:
Alternative ideas for what 4th edition could include, such as alternating activations, new unit ports, etc. This is a Stage 4 process and so there's plenty of time for that later on.
Don't engage edition warriors, trolls and rule revisionists. We're trying to keep it tight; mannered and objective focused.

BATTLE PLAN:
Stage 1:Finish revising and formatting the SRD.
Stage 2:Compile all GW official erratas into the SRD.
Stage 3: Condense all the codices into up to date SRD. - pending
Stage 4: Make a Hobby Enthusiast supplement for the SRD.
Stage 4: Make an Optional Rules supplement for the SRD.

Back from the dead edition

>What is Shadow of the Demon Lord?:
Shadow of the Demon Lord is a horror-fantasy tabletop adventure game that presents a world standing on the brink of annihilation. In this game, you and your friends play characters charged with fighting back against the spreading evil, whether that involves tracking down potent relics, exploring ancient faerie ruins, journeying into Hell to bargain with the Devil, or battling demons and the cultists who summon them. The system is setting agnostic and has a wide variety of possible details for your own world.

>What is PunkApocalyptic: the RPG?:
Another game using the Demon Lord Engine. Text trimmed for text length constraints.

>What is Shadow of the Weird Wizard?:
It's a high fantasy game running on the Demon Lord Engine. It's similar to SotDL, but without the horror elements and the power levels are higher.

You really shouldn't have a tough time of it. On the player-facing side, they don't have much to worry about other than understanding the boons/banes part.

I was in a little convention game once, and I think half the table thought they were playing D&D with some custom adventure module called "Shadow of the Demon Lord" until about an hour into the game.
>>
>>96521066
I haven't played much, but the two friends I got to try sotdl who only have experience with 5e are loving it so far. Sotdl at it's core is kinda like a simplified 5e. Only four attributes, no skills(just professions), no proficiency bonus, and every roll is just to beat a 10 or an opponents attribute. They're also really enjoying the different actions they can take in combat other than just attack. I'd definitely reccommend starting at level zero, having a cheatsheet for all the actions/attacks they can make, and just using plenty of those actions to showcase what they can really do. Otherwise they might get set in what alot of 5e combat is, and just use spell, or take the attack action, end turn. Which I guess isn't a bad way to play, just bores the hell outa me
>>
>>96523318
>>96523888
I'll have to put together a one shot, it really does seem like a clever system
>>
>>96521066
I did with SDL, it went very well. I went out of my way to warn them that the fights can be deadly and they must be smart about or perish. I started with the level 0 to really drive the point in.
>>
>>96521066
It's close enough to D&D 5e on the basic level so 5e players shouldn't have too much trouble learning it, I switched over from 5e years ago and the main draw was the path system.

Imagine a soul is a cup of water and a chaos god is a jug of milk. The path of ascension is the process of pouring milk into the water until it's all white. Becoming a demon prince is the moment you can no longer see any trace of water left.
>>
>>96533321
Personally, I believe that Daemon Princes can, in fact, do what they will, and even act against the God's wishes.

The issue is, they don't want to. The process of becoming Daemons, countless horrible, horrible things they commit to achieve it, and even the mere character to commit to that breeds a special sort of person.

I think they could cure someone, but largely as a joke, when, for example, surviving would be worse and victim is going to get purged anyway.

Also, diseases are sacred to Nurgle. By curing someone, you're killing the germs. That's racist. And Nurgle would prefer you speaking German anyway.

Trench Crusade General - /trench/
Weird love Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?
All the files are free online, but are split between the website and the discord. They have all been collected here for your convenience:

>there is no foregone conclusion when 2 people are fighting
They're not fighting. It's just a direct contest of strength. Your statement explains why actual combat has attack rolls, damage rolls, and saves.
>there is a very high chance the barbarian wins
It's not just "a very high chance." If the Wizard isn't using magic to empower himself, deceive, or cheat in some way (which would be represented by him using the mechanical spell effects available to him), then he should lose outright. The only caveat is if the Barbarian is weakened, is deliberately being reckless, or if there is some fault in the surface they're arm wrestling on that the Wizard noticed and would be able to exploit. However, in the lattermost case that is no longer a straight contest of strength, so it should be governed by a different role or series of rolls to determine the outcome.
It's not a solution to the swingyness. It's for the mere fact that not every action in the game is to be decided by pure chance. You use the dice to arbitrate events that are uncertain and/or that have a chance of failure.
>for a scenario in which the odds are totally in line with verisimilitude
They aren't though. The 9 STR Wizard will never win a pure contest of strength against the 18 STR Barbarian. That's such a huge gulf in capability that, unless one or both sides do something to alter the challenge, it's a clear cut contest.
>you must be retarded and not understand probability
What probability? There's nothing believable about the Wizard ever winning a straight arm wrestle without tricks or some other caveat.
>the barbarian tries to tackle you and he automatically wins
This is a different scenario to an equally agreed upon contest of strength. More factors are involved in avoiding a tackle.
You want to talk bad faith? That's a bullshit non-equivalance.
>in no case should things just be predetermined based purely on "this is what should happen because"
The rules literally tell you to do this.

bjd reveals that the elders who founded the sabbat knew the entire time but it's not said what happens to the guy just that they are voting for a new regents and lucita is in the running despite not wanting the job

as of v5 lucitagot the job but might be dead (if you belief talley) and another impersonator took her place and i like to belief that this is again just sikorsky again who the regime now just uses a regent body double

Most likely recasters, but not sure how the market is right now
All the Russian ones are probably dead
So you should look into Chinese ones

Working on this kitbashed Miraculist to serve as my Terminator Squad's teleporter homer.
I'll freehand some mural painting on the empty pannel behind her head.
Instead of using some boring machine, my Black Templars use a burning psyker that has a homer strapped to her.

Does anyone know a good recipe for Terracotta? i primed this guy in wraith bone and tried gorthor contrast like everyone recommends and it looked so tea stainy that i stripped it and reprimed it for a regular paintjob instead.

I've got some P3 Bloodstone that might fit but looking for any advice since its a matieral i've not tried to replicate with paint before.

Square blocks of wood or foam. Drywall mesh tape, spackle or wood filler and sand for the top.

>Drywall mesh tape
Fuck man, that's what I was missing! I thought of makin them from some plastic mesh, but solid blocks with that tape seem much easier. Trips of truth indeed.

That's the catch 22, isn't it? When the sci-fi armour does cover up the wearer's mechanical replacement limbs, how can you tell that the wearer has mechanical replacement limbs?
