I want to get into pathfinder 2eR, and I really like playing wizards, but Vancian casting perplexes me to no end. Is there some sort of strategy guide? Like... How many fireballs am I supposed to prepare? Combat can come at literally any moment - how am I supposed to be prepared for the hundreds of spontaneous 'roll initiative''s?

Am I just supposed to load the fuck up on panic spells and fireballs and use spell substitution to cast everything as a pseudo-ritual when needed? How the hell am I supposed to account for this shit without having 9 mega lethals in the chamber just so I'm not the most useless babyboy in the world during any surprise combat? How do I go back in time and kill Jack Vance to stop Gary Gygax from reading Dying Earth and copying the stupidest magic system available?

>Vancian casting perplexes me to no end
As you little zoom-zooms say: Skill issue.
>Am I just supposed to load the fuck up on panic spells and fireballs and use spell substitution to cast everything as a pseudo-ritual when needed?
This has nothing to do with either Vance or Gygax. Vance had nothing to do with RPGs and Gygax left TSR fifteen years before spell substitution was a thing. Blame modern game designers being obtuse about magic-users not being able to "just win"
>How the hell am I supposed to account for this shit without having 9 mega lethals in the chamber just so I'm not the most useless babyboy in the world during any surprise combat?
Welcome to playing a magic-user circa 1973. Have the fighting-men protect you, like a normal wizard.

Making a low-hanging fruit joke while asking a question that has nothing to do with politics does not actually imply that the person in question thinks about nothing but politics, anon.
>>
>>96605539
I don't understand why people have trouble understanding Gygax's implementation of Vancian magic.

I personally don't know what kind of system later editions use, but it seems perfectly normal to me that you copy the spells you want to use today into your spellbook and then if they work out, they work out. If not, the dungeon/adventure becomes more interesting.

Find out EXACTLY (from you totally real not made up imaginary DM) how many encounters you will have per day so you can stock up on spells appropriately
Also tell him it's not metagaming, a wizard would know, sense danger, sense he will have to cum fireballs X times a day.

For those who don't know the Ravnica setting, it's a demiplane-wide city ruled by twelve mage guilds:

*Selesnya - a bunch of hippie communists who specialize in holy and plant magic

*The Orzhov Syndicate is what would happen if the Catholic Church fused with an organized crime syndicate. Using both holy and necromantic magic, they've turned loansharking into an art. And if you can't pay your debts in life, they'll be happy to raise you as a lesser undead to keep working. For a "modest" fee, of course.

*House Dimir collapsed thousands of years ago. All the history books agree. Of course, House Dimir wrote those history books . . .

A collection of spies, illusionists, psychics, and detectives, no one knows more of Ravnica's secrets than House Dimir. And if you know how to contact them, it's proof that they're willing to share (or trade). Why else would you even remember they exist?

*The Cult of Rakdos is a seemingly endless rave, kept going for the pleasure of the demon lord Rakdos. Music, drugs, bum fights . . .If it's fun, or "fun", it can be found in a Rakdos district.

*The Azorious Senate is an alliance of lawyers and cops who've literally weaponized the law, basing an entire style of magic on making/interpreting the rules

I read that DH2 is the only system of the three that doesn't use actual money. I'm not sure how I feel about that. What do you think DH2 does well?
>>
>>96603868
Expanding on that, 1e has entire pages of tables for your character to buy advances from and going outside that requires them to either spec into an alternate career rank that has it or ask to buy it (usually at an inflated price). 2e has an aptitude system where anybody can buy anything (except for psychic stuff unless if you have the psyker aptitude), it is just a matter if how expensive it is. I personally like the way 2e does character building since it allows far more variety even if everybody picks the same homeworld and background due to the role they can select in character gen.
>>
>>96603894
Correct,

Dh2 has Influence
You get a number requisitions and you have to roll under your influence so it works like other stats

DH1 has money, careers have various incomes and every item has a price

In my eyes DH2 rules contain the needed fixes (tho I happen to be playing with 100+ pages of houserules) but DH1 jank has its charm too
>>
>>96603954
Not that anon but I'll play Devil's Advocate and say the chargen freedom, to me, is a downside. I don't really like the modularity that second edition offers, and I find it more flavorful for a character to fit a specific niche. I also don't like how less dangerous second edition is than first edition. New acolytes are meant to be bumbling fucking retards, in my opinion. That said, neither edition is perfect.

Can anyone recommend some reading on the beatification process? Obviously going supersaiyan and incinerating a daemon counts, but there's also saints like Rybel Gorth, who kept a hundred minds safe in the warp. Who makes the final decision? That sort of thing. I'm thinking of having a player find out he was declared a Saint without realising it.

It was poorly handled in general, with a couple of especially weird project managers.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/jun/05/world-of-darkness-the-inside-story-mmo-ccp-white-wolf

>Most of the sources spoken to for this piece identified the same problematic CCP manager, who had little vision for what the finished game would look like.

>“Not once could he answer any question about moment-to-moment gameplay or areas of focus,” says one source. “Instead, he preferred to deliver buzzword-laden rambles… It was not uncommon for him to communicate in onomatopoeia.

What is everyone's experience with running WoD one-shots?
As in, self-contained scenarios that can be played entirely in a single, few hours long session or 2 sessions at most, preferably with some of the players being new to the game. Can be with premade characters, but doesn't have to.

I'm asking because based on my experience I feel like most WoD games are really designed with a longer campaign play in mind, where you can really get into your character shoes, experience them struggling with their unnatural existence and everyday life in it, explore their place within whatever power struggles and intrigues they're entangled in etc.
I'm just kinda having a hard time coming up with scenarios that are short, self-contained things you can just quickly jump in and out of in this setting that would feel satisfying, unless it;s with PCs that were already estabilished in former games. But maybe it's just a me issue, so I wanted to ask whether you ran those, how did they looked like, what they were about, whether they were good and what are your general thoughts on the matter. Getting a regular group for a campaign can sometimes be tricky after all.

We mostly play oWoD Vampire and Hunter

Trench Crusade General - /trench/
Let's Make A Warband Generator Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?
All the files are free online, but are split between the website and the discord. They have all been collected here for your convenience:

Ran a guy through a few learning games this afternoon, just some 700p basic matches with Great War.
I took a war wolf with generic heretics, felt bad, swapped deployments after he remade his list and took my usual mammon but without a war wolf.
He took the plague basic variant, then swapped to the variant where you can give zombies guns.
The entire warbands basically getting gas masks for free was quite a rain on my parade. As are the 2 attendants on a machine gun rot knight.
Anyway it was fun and he was happy he managed to beat out the heretics by 100 points in the second game.

Next time we play he’ll be going to 900 8 glory and we will see the horrors unleashed

What’s the deal with the big rulebook 1.0 btw. When are we expecting it?
>>
>>96605607
I think the knight heads and bodies would look okay for new antioch if you took off the antennae, as would the fusilier bodies and legs. The main issue imo is the all the tech lines and lights in the armour not meshing well with the smooth, broad plates that Antioch likes to use, though to be fair the lights can easily get repainted as rivets.
>>
>>96606451
>The entire warbands basically getting gas masks for free was quite a rain on my parade.
Yep normally it balances out as you end up playing multiple unique factions and people over the course of your campaign. But back to back it can hurt.
What were you running in generic heretics that you had enough gas for that to be impactful to your gameplan?

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.

I would have wanted to add as well...
>the Indoornesse
but Melan, while being admittedly a very gifted module designer, is a bit of a FOE in that he only gives distances in terms of time and not of space, so it's impossible to say.
>The Caverns of Thracia's Level 3
but as far as I can see there's no indication of how large the Palace Gardens are, nor any explanation of what defines their borders: Cavern walls? Or something more magical, mystical, eldritch, and arcane?
>>
>>96600536
To be fair, Melan *only* does this with the Indoornesse AFAIK, so it porbably has less to do with him being a FOE and more to do with it being a liminal magical space which doesn't obey normal rules of physics (most obvious in the case of the castle within, of course).

Blissbringer

This rune-inscribed pacifier is made of bronze, with the part that's supposed to go in someone's mouth covered in soft leather. When a wielder holds it and pronounces the name* of someone within line of sight, that person must make a save vs. spells/WIL/Int or the pacifier zooms out to them and plops itself in their mouth. That person is then unable to speak, drink potions, or do anything else with their mouth for 1d4 turns. Aside from spells that dispel magic, it is possible to remove the pacifier through brute force, but doing this does 2d8 points of damage to the victim as flesh is torn.

* Referee's discretion as to whether nicknames would work; I would rule that nicknames made up on the spot definitely would not, but if it was a long-standing nickname that the person responded to, it probably would.

Cheers. White primer, glaze with very diluted pinks, purples etc for the shading, then lots of layered highlights with thinned white. Took a while compared to every other colour.

Some two or three years ago, I saw someone start up a 13th Age 1e living world/West Marches server. The premise of the setting was, essentially, isekai. New PCs would simply appear somewhere in the world; I do not remember if they had their starting gear or were essentially naked.

The twist here was that the isekai process was """""realistic""""" in that there was no guarantee that PCs would appear safely on the ground. The GM had each new PC roll on a comprehensive set of tables to determine whether they appeared in the sky, in the sea, immured in the earth, or, yes, atop terra firma. There were rolls to determine height or depth, and distance from the nearest settlement.

Naturally, multitudes upon multitudes of new PCs simply died. No worries, though, because the same player could simply try again with a new character, possibly with the exact same character sheet. It was very goofy in a morbid way.

The GM must have been doing something right, because the server attracted plenty of players. I did not play myself, though.

That is all. It is just a small, silly anecdote.

You would think, but it does make sense:
- Y/N surviving the fall isn't going to be a character design consideration.
- The character is spirited to a random place rather than character designed for that place. You might be able to glean info on the environment otherwise.
-You can use the same generated character and try again.
The main issue is just...why make them fall if not doing so is a precondition to play on. Just float them down. Can they get buried underground too?

It isn't really hard to attract plenty of people who are desperate for a game online.

I don't know. Introducing the chance to brick on a black EX3 rookie from one line and this champion of the other seems like a bad idea.
>>
>>96606379
Niche uses really. Raid Greymon could be used to hit floodgates but BT17 already did that while keeping the rookie's name and already nobody runs that.
Jamming Garurumon might be useful if they ever lose their bullshit option that replays any rookies they launch at security.

I think Date is the best Omni support this set.
>>
>>96606399
I will never understand how digica players think about consistency and bricking. It's irrational in a way I didn't think was possible. You can literally force feed the most brain dead top-tier deck in existence to them, complete with rolling waves of support any other deck would drool over, and they'll go "EW NO WHAT IF PUTTING THIS INCREDIBLE CARD IN MY DECK MADE ME BRICK WITH THESE THREE SHITTY BLACK ROOKIES I PLAY???"
>>
>>96606548
When you get this much support your main concerns shift more towards consistency of effects rather than abundance or even power levels.
>>
>>96606692
Bro the card is raw consistency.

This one. I fingerlicking love how anon did this cloth.
>>
>>96606339
I feel like anon was trying to do a shimmering cloak with the lighting pattern but it is coloured too flatly. It needs more highlighting and contrasting black, but I do agree that the concept is really good

What's the best way to magnetizing vehicles for transport if they don't use bases? Assuming things like tanks that are mostly flat, shoving rectangular ones at the bottom of the interior?
>>
>>96606770
Put the tank on a decorative base, and then magnetize that.

That's a 2003 or earlier model, no wonder 3d printers wouldn't have it.

Like half of the most wanted stuff from forge world is like 1999s material that 3D printers just never got scans of, I have some of the stuff from 1998.

I'm going to sell it soon but, it will be extremely upmarked given the extreme rarity of what i have.

Here's some of the guard stuff from 2003-2000 used in conversions.
