Welcome to the New School Revolution General, the thread dedicated to games derived from the OSR movement.

>What is the NSR?
the NSR is a subcategory of the OSR, it mostly follows the same play style but experiments further with the mechanics and settings
*broadly NSR games*
*have* a gm, a interesting setting, living world
*are* rules light, deadly
*and focus on* emergent narrative, external interaction and exploration

>What is this thread for?
This thread is for system, adventure, setting, mechanics, ongoing campaigns, anything that related to the *actual* game
POST ART ALSO, inspiration and for the tg threads

>What is this thread NOT for?
Meta discussions or drama of the games and its creators aka shadowboxing with twitter, reddit and the OSRG (frens with osrbros)

Conflict is necessary, but not necessarily with enemies. Races are always a change of pace for me, and pursuits too.

Assume this is good faith and not bait.

You CAN talk about it here, but it's not necessarily the place where you will get the most or best answers.

If you want to talk about Gygax's AD&D ("1e") played the Gygax way, you might have better luck asking on the real /osrg/ thread, which is very much focused on that style: >>96815749

If you want to talk about AD&D 2e, you might try on the 2e thread that is posing as an /osrg/ thread in a pathetic attempt to hijack it: >>96815556

The second one is also the thread if you want to talk about AD&D 1e but played in the narrativist / railroading / Hickman style, which is what lies at the core of the AD&D 2e game philosophy. However, you're not very likely to get useful answers there because the thread wasn't really created to discuss games, just to troll the real /osrg/.
>>
>>96830719
>Could it be any more obvious that this general was created by that one sperg and while he has his troll version of /osrg/ up he no longer cares about this one?
You lads are always welcome back in the real /osrg/ while he's not there if you want to come hang out.

It's funny really, I remember that you'd get shit for liking something like, say, Shadowdark, but no one ever told you not to talk about it over there. Which means this thread doesn't need to exist and is just a divide & conquer attempt.
>>
>>96837444
>no one ever told you not to talk about it over there
Just because saying it's shit was almost always enough to get people to stop talking about it, unlike 2e, which is an obsession of one particular psychotic individual who's been trying to use it to torment /osrg/ for years at this point.

>Which means this thread doesn't need to exist and is just a divide & conquer attempt.
I disagree. There's definitely multiple games that are off-topic on /osrg/ but deserve a place where they can be discussed. Shadowdark, Mork Borg, Cairn, Knave, Mauritter, and so on. So /nsrg/ does serve a purpose.

Does it piss anyone else off how people think the Guard is just disposable chaff? They're not the most elite forces the Imperium has but they're hardly cannon fodder, in fact I'd say they're the most elite common infantry of any faction in the setting.

Now, I know what you're thinking. "How can Guardsmen be as elite as Aspect Warriors/Crisis Suits/Ork Nobs?" But that's not the average soldier of those factions. A Guardsmen isn't going to be fighting 1 to 1 versus an Aspect Warrior or a Crisis Suit or an Ork Nob, they're going to be fighting Guardians, Firewarriors, and Boyz instead, the common chaff of those factions. Likewise with all the other factions as well.

>Er... no?
I suggest you read the 3e codex, pg. 58 to 60. The Imperials reached the Tau core worlds until the resistance became too much and the reinforcements they were promised had not yet arrived. Then Kryptman ordered everyone back (to fight the Tyranids) and a hasty peace was negotiated.
>>
>>96835886
I'm sure some guard look like that. there's a million different IG regiments (literally) and no two are alike
>>
>>96837352
>Are modern militaries crippled by Army, Navy and Air Force being separate branches and even within the Army having different regiments working together, rather than each regiment having everything they might ever need?
Modern military branches cooperate and use combined arm doctrines, attaching companies to fighting forces to mix and match into a complete detachment that is prepared for most eventualities. The Imperium's military does not. Guilliman designed it that way on purpose to make sure that if an Armored Regiment goes traitor, it won't have any infantry support because all the infantry are in the infantry regiments somewhere else. It also won't have air support, or orbital support of course.
>Vast majority of rebellions are not Chaos related.
Guilliman didn't give a shit about secular rebellions. Read the fucking lore nogames.
>>
>>96837488
>Modern military branches cooperate and use combined arm doctrines
As does the Imperial Guard. Imperial Guard codex contains units from infantry, artillery and armoured regiments, abhuman regiments, Officio Prefectum, Tempestus Scions, Adeptus Mechanicus, Imperial Navy, Adeptus Astra Telepathica, etc. all operating together. Regiments from different worlds are trained using the same manual to ensure that even if regiments come from different cultures, there's a unified framework that allows them to work together as a single army. What the separation ensures is that because they all have to cooperate, rarely does one person have full command of everything necessary to wage war (on the Imperium). Instead of one lord commanding all the ships, land forces and logistics necessary, there would need to be a larger conspiracy among several members all commanding a portion of that force.
>Guilliman didn't give a shit about secular rebellions.
Which would be weird considering during the Heresy, on top of all the Chaos corrupted forces, there were large numbers of opportunistic individuals seizing the moment to carve a small empire of their own across the galaxy. Rogue traders and lords in command of regions of space with armies loyal to them before the Imperium.
>Read the fucking lore nogames.
Strong words for someone who doesn't know basic codex lore.
>>
>>96834842
I don't know. I don't think about 40k lore, ever since the primaris situation. If GW doesn't respect or care about its own setting, how could I?

Please no. We don't need to make Lunars more one-note than they already are.
>>
>>96837463
>>96837496

Usually when I think of lunars it is from the full moon point of view rather than Changing Moons or No Moon pretty much never pop up on reflecting the competence of the lunars other than being able to shapeshift. It's weird, but every time lunars are talked about it's usually in a combat situation. No one really talks about a lunar being able to deceive heaven by subsuming the fate of another. Which they could do in 2e, but too much effort when you can kill better.
>>
>>96837422
>Like the one poster calling Conan a lunar can work. It annoys me because i'd rather give that to solars.
Caste book dawn outright copied the frost giant daughter for Yurgen origins.

And despite technically sharing the "anti civilization" theme of Howard's works, it is only surface level.
Lunars are anachoprimitivists, compared to Howard's "stop being two faced opportunist snakes".

Lunars actually have more in common with the degenerate savages that Kull and Conan fight.

They never really stopped, see 2e Ma-Ha-Suchi.
Even when 3e and Essence tried to move away from it, there's still shades of primitism in their writing.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade Gygaxian D&D, its various modern clones, and content created specifically for use with this. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade (74-83) — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread, feel free to check them out for answers:

>When it comes to dungeoneering? I'd argue that you are correct. When it comes to other aspects I'd argue that you are wrong.

You can say that I am wrong but if you haven't tried running the system using the rules your opinion isn't worth anything to me.

Judges guild made the best tools for city adventures in the 70s.

I'd concur that some monster manuals are improvements, UNE NPC emulator is slight improvement over the one in the DMG. Random d100 tables have gotten excellent.
Also the Dungeons got really great after the megadungeon craze so that's probably better now too.

>A ot of RPGs are cargo cult games written by people who don't even know that their games are incomplete
Someone pointed this out in /nsrg/ recently:

Very interesting read on the difference between design vs replication.
>>
>>96836930
>I can't find anything missing
Ah, yes, no, gotcha. Dungeon Under the Keep is complete. It's BlackWyvern's Cellar Below the Guide House that is missing information on its third level.

I mix them up because I've combined those two, as well as Dyson's Screams from Jedder's Hole, into a huge ten-level dungeon under the Keep.

Has anyone here tried running any skirmish matches with any OSR? I don't mean like mass combat. I mean small scale like party vs party. It sounds like something me and my friend would enjoy but I can't really envision a costing method to use. I'd probably be happy rolling 5 guys against 5 and a dungeon to battle in. But a little balance and stretching my noggin' wouldn't hurt either.

I gave you an answer, the Haren from Weird Wizard. I ran the first bits of “Rage of the Goblin King.”
>>
I actually did something like this in a game.

Instead of goblins, the land was being attacked by fey-descended creatures who resembled short humanoid rabbit-ish creatures. They lived in burrows and had a matriarchal structure, with each warhost having a large foul tempered queen. They were pretty desructive and regarded as pests until their burrow got large enough, after which they would form armies and sack towns.

I described them like they were fur-covered goblins but in truth I could only picture them as Max from Sam & Max.
>>
>>96833101
My druid PC actually got their arm ripped off by a rabbit demon a few months ago. They've since grown a magical wooden arm. We were never able to completely eradicate the demon infestation, a few lesser demon rabbits got away and our DM implied that while we stopped the growth for a year or two, the problem will just come back, maybe even worse. The only time our party wasn't able to outright defeat the monster/completely fulfill our contract.

Sorry, I just realized the flipflopping.
The reason behind invasion being hyperfatalism should've been built on, then it suddenly switches to imperialist revival politics.

Fine, maybe hyperfatalism couldn't be the main drive FOR invasion after all, just BEHIND it, only adding to the backstory, reactionary politics coming in to take its place, keeping it nonsensical, but not SO nonsensical that it's bad writing.

I aim to never fudge dice rolls. But ultimately the game is about having fun. Here's a moment I fudged recently, you all can judge if it was acceptable or not.
>playing 5.5e with a new player, first time ever playing
>she made a barbarian and was excited about the cleave weapon mastery ability
>fight was pretty tense, down to the wire.
>two monsters were lined up perfectly in front of her
>it was almost her turn, but one of them got an attack first.
>i rolled, and it would have downed her, ruining the cool cleave moment for her to end the fight.
>i fudged it for a miss, she then cleaved and killed both, everyone was excited

I prioritized a new player having a heroic moment. Im not averse to killing players but I want them to have fun
>>
>>96837316
I'd say you did right. Ultimately there nothing changed result-wise besides some minor resource spending, she would've gone down, rolled a death save that didn't matter, then the next person would kill the monsters and the cleric/druid/bard would bring her back up with a 1st level slot. The only thing not fudging there would accomplish is robbing the player of their cool moment and take away one tiny resource.
>>
>>96837316
I think as a "veteran" player I'd be disappointed to find out the DM fudged for me to semi-script an outcome like that, but pulling punches on new people to help them experience the cool parts of TTRPGs is probably good. You did right imo
>>
Anyone who makes a blanket statement like "it's never okay to fudge and if you do you're a bad GM" is almost certainly a nogames tourist, or is themselves an abysmally shit GM.

That aside, I think fudging on occasion is fine for the sake of pacing. Things like having an enemy die when they're at 1 or 2 HP left after an attack, or letting players pass a check outside of combat if they're "close enough". Same goes for if a player is attempting something particularly cool or interesting in combat/a crisis situation. Of course, I also just let players DO things without having to roll at all a lot of the time (if they're not under duress), especially if it's something their character is supposed to be good at or knowledgeable in
>>
>>96836154
It's not okay, fudging is cheating and takes all fun out of the game.

For: Creation and discussion of Lewd RPGs; including Solo Rpgs, Homebrews, and Greentexts about your game sessions (specify the system you are using)

>DON'T post or ask for "Looking For Group" or "Looking for Players".
>DON'T sperg about Hentai logic, Hentai Artists or NTR. Take your meds.
>NO Shota/loli crap. Go to /trash/

>What's a Solo RPG?
1: YouTube (Season 1 of Me, Myself & Die! gives a good explanation)
2: Ask in the Solo RPG General: >>96465762
3: Solo is a good way to test out systems and to avoid problems such s "Schedule Conflict" or "Playing with Weirdos"

Restarted my campaign from a year back, low fantasy magindustrial punk
> started as hp hermione, became bladerunner deckard, had a dream as theatrical sailormoon
Been flying through story 2 and a half arcs so far, a session a night pretty consistently.
> fade to black is friend
only 3 lewdish scenes; girls painting the town red waking up in a full bed, comforts with a dad bod, and siblings complaining about the on-going dad bod boning.
The siblings think it's gross, protag is the same age as the older brother.
> it's really just complaining
There's also only been 3-4 ish murders, with one being very "Maybe?"
Main issue is that there's a lot drugs and manipulation.
> save the prince(not ess)
Latest arc is dad bod got captured and she has to rescue him.
Rolled up a conniving, calculating mobster lawyer as an ally

The kicker is though that most of the fun I have is just playing as the character's mechanical familiar, during interludes to palette cleanse between arcs.

Wait is this cartoon you've been using to clown on George a Looney Tunes cartoon? Or is it Hana Barbera?
