yes, obviously, left looks better than right, no one is going to disagree with that. but when playing a GAME, right is obviously going to be a funner experience for BOTH sides, just look at the utter lack of balance in the left terrain set up. the near side has to traverse a river and then fight through open fields while the far side immediately gets access to most the hard cover of buildings on the map and on top of that gets the hedgerows overlooking the open fields. its blatantly not fair and poorly set up.>but just give the attack side more units!ok then, how do you balance that? how do you know how many points to allocate to balance out the terrain advantage? double? triple? what if thats too much and now the attacker has the distinct advantage? its way too much trouble to figure out. thats why tourney tables will always provide the better gameplay experience for BOTH sides. GAMEplay. WarGAMES. These are GAMES. A good game needs to be fun for all involved. It is not fun when one side has an inherent advantage over the other. There is a reason why 40k tournaments are by and far the most popular wargaming events and playstyle over every single alternative."Think of it this way. Look at Battletech players. They arguably play on the ugliest paper hex mats and hex counter terrain in wargaming, despite the fact that playing BT with physical and 3d terrain has existed for decades. They CHOOSE the uglier terrain because readability and clear rules for LOS matter to gameplay, aesthetics do not.

I bring with me a story, a story I must re-type because 4chan fucked my post in my dealing with IP range bs! Long ago, 16 years and a couple days ago, an anon made a small game called Wizard Battle and posted it to /tg/. Last year, someone on a discord server I'm in told me of the game and told me to do something with it. As such, I've cleaned the game up a bit in some parts, and filled it up in others. Since the original game was posted originally as a thread, I thought I would bring things around full circle.>but anon the amateur game design thread is 8 pages down the hall!Too bad, I already posted an earlier version of this in a game design thread. The game: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Hm4bLdzsX4bzYMxgs-N1fnCNVDUwKKXxwxqD9eddqdkThe original: https://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/2010/8941465/

So I bought the hardcopy of this to use as a source book because fuck playing 3.5, but also damn this book got me when I was younger. Has anyone actually run The Mecha Hack or Aether Nexus? If Y, were they functional or even f u n? I'm thinking of ways to get my group who primarily prefer ruleslite games into this besides strapping them to chairs and watching escaflowne until they like it.
This may be an appropriate place to post this. I am foreshadowing a threat from deeper in the dungeon that I'm writing and have found that there doesn't appear to be a B/X statblock for an Aboleth. I checked my AD&D Monster Manual and Fiend Folio and didn't see it there either, but I did find it in my 2e AD&D monster manual. My question is, how much (if at all) do I need to tweak a statblock from 2e in order to fit B/X, or would I be better off just homebrewing from scrap? I understand that certain elements (like XP) are very different and am prepared to adjust those, I'm just wondering if anyone is familiar with any weird trends (like AD&D2e creatures having lower AC or better attacks on average). Google searches exclusively tried to tell me about 5e statblocks.
>>97841878The aboleth comes from I1 Dwellers of the Forbidden City, so it couldn't be in the Monster Manual for reasons of causality. It's in MMII, the first monster in the book actually.
>>97842072Ok thanks, I don't have that one but I'm sure I can find a statblock online.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. >>97841531I see your concern and I think it's a legit one, slowing the game down eventually, and affecting how PCs engage with the dungeon. But since Critical Role will be the players' (i.e. the audience) only experience of RPGs, if not herded, I fear they will end up not building strongholds, etc. ever. Because wargaming is not taken for granted, or even known among the existing playerbase (whom have access to English rules --of mostly 5e and VtM stuff).I'll think of a better way to lead players into that, if I can.

>>97840120ntaGetting rid of electrum is fine, but I have found having that super special PLATINUM PIECES as a thing does delight players. XP for spent treasure is a choice you're making to direct towards domain play, which honestly is your call but I think detracts from the overall freedom of exploration base many players will find appealing. It will narrow your already narrow field. Having it be a possibility rather than the goal might have better success as an intro game, lots of folks don't seem to find domain play appealing at all. Otherwise seems fine. Post it when you make it, cool project. What are you thinking of running for the intro dungeon?
Been chilling on Japanese TRPG twitter and they put like 1000% times more effort into the games they run. Like this would be a pic of how polished an average VTT game looks like in Japan.
>>97837096/thread
>>97837062The isekai market exists due to the japanese, wouldn't call using a pre-existing mold effort. Effort would be a banzai that makes everything by hand, even if not good looking.
Their range of indie CoC scenarios are unmatched, and when they turn it into streamable content they make it look great presentation-wise. I wish we have more of these translated.
It’s best to take a balanced perspective on technology. I’ve spent 10k hours in foundry and been running irl games since I was a kid. Foundry brings an unparalleled level of fidelity to your games, even if you prefer totm. Once you understand how the system works, your games run twice as fast, or more. Nobody has to do math anymore which speeds up everything to unimaginable levels (this has the knock on effect of making high level play much easier). You can assemble massive compendia of lore and details, upload all your hand drawn maps to one place (with annotations). You can integrate music to make the experience vivid and operatic. Fvtt also solves the issue of mapping and fow in a way that irl can never even approach. The drawback is that fvtt is an extremely temperamental program that constantly deals out frustration and stress to the dungeon master. If you ever update your program, which sometimes you need to do in order to play a certain system, it has a high chance of rendering your old work damaged. The UI is unnecessarily complex, and it takes a lot of work to do simple things, and mods can’t always fix the issues that the clueless devs create. It puts a high level of demand on the GM, and dealing with the tech alone can lead to burnout. There are dozens of noob traps and hidden issues that will plague you, like undiagnosable neurological diseases. I have even spent money in vain efforts to hire professionals to fix these issues, but fvtt is a poorly made program and it only enjoys the place it does because other vtts are even worse. But with all this said, you’re deluding yourself if you think that you’re better than other GMs because you refuse to learn how to use software.

>>97841575Lot of investors missed dozens of memos that AI companies already have their own data centers, that they will not be expanding them, that exponentially larger compute farms are functionally worthless because exponentially scaling up training not only doesn't work, but also makes LLMs worse, AND AI already usage plateaued and started dropping off last year, but man... it keeps going. They also didn't notice that even if these AI services weren't withering, we still wouldn't have a use for thousands of data centers running on hardware that is being made obsolete right now, before they even finish laying the foundation.

He got yelled at by a car’s driver, but the driver was intimidated into silence by Amber, the Hobo Goth girl, flashing her revolver under her jacket>The group went to Rémis’ apartment building and were greeted by the owner, Roger Smith. A 50-60ish Latino man in a Hawaiian shirt sporting an impressive moustache, a bit senile, and vibing in front of the building while smoking and reading the news>I accidentally made Rémis’ life more miserable because I mistook apartment for condos and told him his rent will increase because a pipe broke down>They then entered Rémis’ small apartment. Barely has room inside, and even less furniture. All of them are old and bought in sales>His wife Britney, a Children of Gaia kinfolk, was watching TV on a Sunday morning while lazing on the couch while suddenly her husband and three strangers just barged inside>Before she could say anything Stig turned into his lupus form and locked himself up inside Rémis and Britney’s bedroom. Claiming it as his own.>I played Britney as really pissed off, but also defeated. Which ended up really passive aggressive, which Rémis tried vainly to calm down. She just said nothing and went back to her doom scrolling TV because as a kinfolk she had no say in her garou husband’s decision
>I also had the player roll a Perception and Empathy check, and only one of them noticed that Britney had a spike of emotions only when Garou specific words are mentioned. Like Rite of Passage, or Lupus, etc. They couldn’t catch that it was resentment.>Stig slept for the day to calm down from the stress of the city, but Nakia decided to talk to Britney while Rémis was making dinner and Amber was vibing in her corner.>Nakia started interrogating Britney asking if she has any secrets she discovered about the Wyrm’s agents in the city, so he could relay the info to his tribe>The way I view kinfolk, since most are excluded from caerns and rites and other social events, I played it as many only know the broad strokes of the conflict against the Wyrm at best. Like the bottom rung of a sect. Britney in her case, used to be rebellious (and punished by marriage) so she knows even less than regular kinfolks. I explained that to them OOC.>She was offended, but told Nakia that she knew nothing about that Wyrm or their agents.>Nakia kept egging her on about Garou only stuff, which was getting on her nerves until he asked what she does to fight the “great enemy”>Britney answered that right now on her weekend her greatest enemy is boredom and the best she can do to stave it off is doom scrolling TV>Nakia having clearly not pushed enough buttons to his liking just said that Britney isn’t contributing to the cause at all and she should feel bad about it>Britney, absolutely livid, just immediately left the apartment
Hey /tg/ I have a problem. One of my players is a genuine incel. He's 27 and I'm pretty sure he's never had sex. He definitely hasn't gotten laid in a while. He's not really ugly just kinda weird and awkward. I feel bad for him. But he is taking his extreme thirst out in the game. >every time his character, a human eldritch knight, comes back from our adventures he always tries to play up the angle of "we saved the town, where are the girls to suck my dick as thanks?">he constantly talks about how his character is 6 foot 2 (he's 5 foot 8 irl)>he talks out of his ass a lot about medieval times and says that peasant girls were way healthier than modern women.>says how farmers would be begging to marry their lithe 17 year old daughters to him>he talks about medieval demographics and criticizes the DMa works building (which is actually kinda shit to be fair) >you can just tell how excited he is talking about how there should be a dozen villages between these two cities on the map, like he is stopping just short of talking about how many nubile virgin farm girls are there for his fighter to fuckWe tried talking to him about it but he twisted it around to make the rest of us sound like we were fucking gay or something. Also his character is too important to the story to kick him, and running him as an NPC would suck the fun out of it since there's be a lot of the DM just roleplaying with himself while the rest of us watch. So....any advice? Its not worth ruining the game over by kicking him, and nothing is so blatant to be a clear social violation, but the dude is just oozing incel energy and I feel like I should subtly suggest to the DM something that will set his head on straight, and possibly help cure his mindset. Happy Easter Sunday everyone on /tg/! To celebrate, how do the people in your settings celebrate the changing of the seasons, especially winter to spring? And what mystical significance do said holidays or even the seasons themselves hold? Does the goddess of spring get summoned by the rites, does the magic of the seasons affect how spells are cast, do special beasts show up to herald the seasons, etc.?
