Is there ANY miniature wargame that isn't insanely expensive? I'm talking about things you can buy in a box and play immediately, not "print your own minis" bullshit or things where you're forced to use proxies cause official models don't exist.

How hard is it to create an interesting campaign without backstory? After reading the classic Sword and sorcery stories, I wanted to do something that didn't rely on backstory and was completely focused on the present. But how do you make it interesting?
>>97817618in medias res is a thing you know>>97817742>Your commander is dead, the only way your division can get supplies is through a guarded pass>The commander is ruthless but honorable>goUnless you consider something as barebones and scene setting as this backstory, IDK how that is flat and boring. You dont need some long monologue, just where you are, what your immediate goal is, and the major characters in play.
>>97817742Don't make the story too flat and boring. Alternatively, know your group and run the kind of game you have in mind for people who'd be interested in it. I don't know what kind of an answer beyond "have interesting shit in it" are you looking for here. That's all there is to it. If you can't think of interesting shit that doesn't depend of backstory established beforehand, you probably shouldn't run a game without backstory. If you can think of interesting shit, why do you think your players would find it boring?
>>97817618Make interesting places for the players to explore. Make interesting characters for the players to interact with and talk to. Make interesting monsters/combat encounters to fight. Give the players room to fill out their own characters. Leave gaps and let the players fill them. the story will emerge on it's own.
>>97817742>someoneSure thing, but there was no indication of who OP is trying to interest, so I had no choice but to answer in terms of my own interests.I can get by without story in a game, I just need the game to be good. But the vocal majority of faggots on this board need daddy to tuck them in before they can throw their dice, and they generally prefer a more /qst/like "structure".So, the answer to OP's retarded question depends on who he's trying to interest.
>>97817835>in medias res is a thing you know>>97817673>Have interesting things happen and interesting characters be present. So between these two comments, there just isn't anything else that needs to be in this thread and I don't fucking understand how the OP managed to think it was a good idea to make this thread anyway. A thread died for this shit. Where are the fucking jannies?
A thread for everything Dragons. What is the best kind of Dragons for a game. Just the standard, firebreathing scally Dragon? Or is it better for a game to give your players variety?
>>97809146thousand sons has wyverns in lore
>>97815414Because it is the common thing. And thats just a common cultural exchange. Happend within Europe too. So did China with Korea and Japan. But Yamata no Orochi is an interesting dragon. Thanks for that info.
>>97705547I found the writing to be lackluster. It reads like a Disney Channel original series with simpleton characters and villains too comically villainous to be taken very seriously. I like dragons, but I wasn't willing to go past the first book. Things may improve after that, but I don't feel like I'm missing out.
>>97812205>>97812672>>97813749Other dragons are a given. I was thinking more in terms of empires, civilizations. Masses of creatures that can exist as long as dragons and rival them in power in their own way, not necessarily being significantly supernatural.Guess I'm trying to write a huge adult dragon as I would an adventurer: what kind of rivals, challenges and quests can he face without it being a straightforward high power magical creature or heroic character. As well as not escalating into all out war with armies.Like giants are pretty good for that. Fae or high power magical creatures seem too wild, momentary challenges.Sentient gryphons or harpy civs perhaps?
>>97817879Ok, not neccessary an adversary or opponent. Something i can see are Dragon hunters (Knight Order or barbarians)Harpies are good. I wouldnt make them civ but like a bird flock. Dragon (Eagle) vs Harpies (Crows).Sphinxes or Chimeras are not that magically. They can just act like special animals.Just like unicorns.

Gonna be honest, as I've gotten older and my soul died from years of wagecucking, I started using AI for ideas now and then. I don't use anything as-is, it's just a way to stir my brain. I have gigabytes of tables and inspirational images that I look through too but sometimes I need something more specific. The AI is nice for that. I hate it I really fucking hate it. But it helps make up for the gaps in my creativity sometimes. I miss when I was younger so badly. I hate being old. I'm not even old I'm 32. The idea that it's only going to get worse than this is truly depressing. I go out in nature, I get enough sleep (now, at least, I do), I go biking, I paint minis, shoot bows, but my creative spark is still on low power. I thought about microdosing LSD but with my luck I would have a bad trip and be a disabled zombie for the rest of my life.
>>97818172Pretty much, as a player I wouldn't care unless you make it blatantly obvious. And even if I noticed I probably wouldn't make a stink about it unless I already have an alternative.

>mimimi, humans don't have their own feature, mimimi, we have to invent somethingNecromancy right here. When was the last time you saw non-human necromancer, lich or vampire? That's right, they practically don't exist because other races are simply inferior when it comes to necromancy and those non-human undead are so pathetic that everyone forgets about their existence in 5 minutes . Except for that one orc, but even he understood that he was worthless and therefore got himself a human body to finally become a full-fledged lich. So yes, here is your feature humans - necromancy, you know that I am right, you can't run away from the truth forever.
I've sometimes wondered if the general absence of non-human fantasy skeletons or zombie models is an indication of a potential gap in the market or that they just don't sell.

I always hear about the stir this caused, and recently about how bad or redeemable it is. I'm not certain about it myself because I dabbled with 3e and then got into 5e, never paid much attention to the scene during that entire era. What does /tg/ think of the system?
>>97816243>star lockFucking autocorrect. I meant a Statblock.
>>97778565>x was good because it achieved its bad designYou are truly retarded. An excellent example of the oversocialized man.
I've said it before, but most people are bad at D&D. They have inefficient resource management, poor decision making skills, a bad understanding of the underlying math, and are incapable of judging the actual value of many rules elements. In other editions, you can kind of get away with just showing up to the table to vibe because not even the developers were good at D&D; nobody was paying attention to you flubbing it. But 4e? If you don't know what you're doing as a player, if you don't know what you're doing as DM, and if you don't know what you're doing as a designer for the system, it's extremely obvious that you don't get it and the game doesn't work very well for you if you don't.

>>97818292I did not play IH, RoW were fine, they offered flavored and themed list building THE PROBLEM is that people still failed to realize that HH 1.0 was a rule system build to be a wargame, not a competative board game about war. War games are meant to be battle simulation, not a balanced war game. The point of RoW is that this is a given formation of the army, so PotL, and we are going to simulate it against some one elses force. Stop thinking of HH as a board game, it should not be, as much as GW wants to try and make it that. Its a wargame in the traditional sense, battle reenactments.
>>97818309Oh no, you're one of those faggots who think shit balance is a good thing because it supports their narrative. >>97818340No, shit balance is bad, and its easy to also recognize when GW does it and agree its bad. ROW were not a bad system, there were a few broken one, that you could self regulate. A few broken aspects of a system does not mean the entire system is bad. RoW were fine.
