Post some stories about your games or campaigns. I'll start:>Be me>Sister wants to play a science fiction game, preferably in the vein of space exploration >Decide to run OSR, specifically Broodmother Skyfortress, but it's reskinned as a science fiction game>"Evil company" (!notWeyland-Yutani) subcontracts the PCs to send some shipping container to an offworld colony; they aren't allowed to know what's inside. They bring along an artificial intelligence named C.L.I.E.N.T. that guides the PCs through an Android it operates called C.L.I.O.>When there is a crash, a shipping container reveals a biohazard, some sort of alien lifeform or organism that was hidden inside a cryogenic vessel; there is a nearby alien that has had its chest cavity blown through...>It turns out that the biohazard is an egg and something familiar comes out of it>Sister asks: "Is this what I think it is?">Egg hatches and a facehugger comes out; it tries to attack the PCs... meanwhile, the chestburster is hiding behind some containers>Simultaneously, the chestburster and facehugger attack the PCs, but sister is able to kill them off; it turns out that an alien species of elephant-centaurs have tried to enslave the Xenomorphs as a military asset but were contaminated by these lifeforms when their colony ship (the Skyfortress) was compromised >Sister gets told by C.L.I.O. that the "evil company" will pay her all the credits she wants if they are able to track down the colony ship and bring back more specimens in cryogenic cubes; she travels to the alien colony ship (where the aliens are big elephant-centaurs), which has been overtaken by the Xenomorphs; there are lairs and hatcheries everywhere, and sister has to fight off all the facehuggers, Xenomorph-elephant-centaurs, and chestbursters
>>97826537Hey now, in both stories they end up getting arrested for leaving behind too much evidence to trace it back to them. It's true the solution to both was probably to simply kill their enemies, it's the method by which they went about it that screwed them over.
>>97829627>Players are clearly too afraid to just go in and shank the dude like DM wants.>Both players and DM are fed up with the amount of time spend on this.>Entire story is full of 'gotcha' moments, where the players attempt something, but they make some fundamental mistake from; not specifying exactly that they do or don't do something, or not taking into account something that only gets revealed later on.>Discussed burning down taxman's house? Whoops, you were doing it in a tavern and didn't specify exactly that you were whispering so as to not have anyone else hear your plot of arson.>Want to knock on the gate to try talk to someone? Silly player, it's actually too far away from the house for anyone to hear.>Want to torch the place? Silly player, the floor is made of stone and there are few pieces of furniture, which your torch misses.>Use an illusion spell to change your appearance to be innocuous? Whoops you didn't specify your face changes, so you're now recognizable to these people who've never had a good look at you.>Oh you want to fight a duel? Silly player, your character has a shield, which is totally forbidden in a duel so he loses immediately.I don't make a habit of criticizing other games, but if your players are so worried about consequences that they're spending hours irl going back and forth, they're constantly not understanding the environment, and you're catching them out on little things like "the half-asleep wife of the taxman recognizes your pc's face from glimpsing it in a poorly lit room, despite changing his clothes and being somewhere else" or "your pc loses the duel because he dares to use a shield", then that's the sign you're being a shit DM (either bad at expounding the setting to your players well, bad at giving your table the benefit of the doubt about their actions, or you're trying to oppose your players, which is pointless because the DM always wins).
>>97831400You've got some misunderstandings here.>Both players and DM are fed up with the amount of time spend on this. They weren't. I was. They didn't see a problem with it (at the time; they've since realized it was kind of ridiculous)>Entire story is full of 'gotcha' momentsI don't see how openly discussing committing arson in a tavern - not to mention all the NPCs they were pestering about the tax collector's location, and suddenly his house burns down a day or 2 later... Maybe we have different definitions of "gotcha" but any competent group of investigators would easily discover the culprits in this situation. However, they could've evaded capture entirely had they just left the city.>Whoops, you were doing it in a tavern and didn't specify exactly that you were whispering so as to not have anyone else hear your plot of arsonYes, unironically. I'll give them some credit, there was a point they realized "hey maybe we should discuss this in our rooms or something" and they moved, but the damage was done.>Silly player, it's actually too far away from the house for anyone to hearSeriously what's actually the problem with this? Go to any gated house and knock on the gate and see if you get an answer. Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>97831400>>97831495>Silly player, your character has a shield, which is totally forbidden in a duel so he loses immediatelyYes, because he (the player, to be crystal clear) requested a duel WITH SWORDS. He even told me right afterwards he had a gut feeling using his shield wasn't gonna be allowed, but he tried it anyway because he didn't wanna eat the 4whatever damage the tax collector would've done.>the half-asleep wife of the taxman recognizes your pc's face from glimpsing it in a poorly lit room, despite changing his clothes and being somewhere elseI dunno man, feels like a stranger in My house is something I'd remember (speaking from experience) enough to recognize him 10-30 minutes later, even if he had a costume change.>your pc loses the duel because he dares to use a shieldAgain, yes, see above. He wanted it and admitted he knew better.>either bad at expounding the setting to your players wellThis is the only one I think you might have some ground with. This was all a few years ago when we were teenagers and I'd like to think all of us have improved since then (although I haven't really played with them, but I have recently starting GMing again), but I don't like the kind of games - either as a player or GM - where the players are getting handheld through things that are obvious common sense, and My players knew I wasn't running that kind of game.Don't discuss committing crimes in a public setting. Things that obviously won't work, like setting water on fire or knocking on a gate (a gate to a fence that can be easily climbed over, from which point you can knock on the door; although you'd probably be trespassing) won't work. If you don't say "I cast fireball", you don't cast fireball, and I will not assume you make the optimal choice of casting fireball nor am I going to tell you that casting fireball is a good idea in this situation.Comment too long. Speaking of warlock, any pointers for my very WIP brew? I feel I'm happy with the chassis now, still needs a ton of feats. https://scribe.pf2.tools/v/WHmHfolp
>>97830912>"Intelligence or Other" would be faster to write out and leave you a bit of wiggle room in case you want to do something else like CON casting>I don't quite get the lore of From Within and From Without schemes. I kind of get why From Within has Medicine training, but Without having Deception is strange since it isn't like you are draining other people magic or power. It would probably be better to just give the whole class scaling Occultism training and word the lore clearer.>The lack of a Patron or enough lore to justify having/not having one is concerning, given the point of Warlocks in D&D.>I'm personally not a fan of Eldritch Gambit or Strained as an idea. I get that it presses them closer to Oracle and properly adds the Power At A Price idea normal Warlocks are missing, but essentially them all being Wild Magic Mages, down to even summoning an additional foe, reaaalllly makes them risky to actually have. If we are shitting on Daredevil for being worse at every role it's trying to be, I can't see anyone being impressed with a whole class that is detrimental (even if the odds of such aren't high). This might be better as a feat, something to opt-in over a core part of the class.>Also you likely outscale such a monster anyway by the time you could roll it so it is just annoying fodder that could fuck up a turn.>Why does Eldritch Ward gives me a random hardness shield?? If you want random damage reduction, keep it simple stupid and make a reaction.>Eldritch Shell is WAAAY too poachable. >It does have the Commander & Kineticist compatibility issue, as Eldritch Blasts are not spells or weapon attacks.>It's currently lacking some real field presence. Having to wait until Eldritch Barrier to be able to make anything that doesn't just disappear instantly means you lack impact in a battle.
>>97831078Thanks for the feedback!>From Within/WithoutYeah the lore could be better, I lifted the names from Dark Heresy 2e splats and From Without was Intimidation at one point, not that I couldn't change it again.>Pact and PatronAlready Witch's deal>GambitDo you think it could be a good feature if the Wild Magic effects were balanced better? >>97831156>Do you think it could be a good feature if the Wild Magic effects were balanced better? It's supposed to be a gamble for action efficiency.Again, it is a personal deal. I'm not 100% against Wild Magic tables and the like, hence why I say it should be a feat akin to Oracle's Roll the Bones. But the concept is not something that can be all that balanced as a core class feature. If you aren't doing ONLY negative effects to balance out Gambit's potential, then you are very limited in that design space unless you consider the class to be a joke. I can't say it would be UNPOPULAR, I still people gushing fondly about Legacy Ancestors Oracle. I just prefer consistency over chaos unless I get in a good mood or headspace.>Hmm, maybe I could change the value. Gambit is supposed to be the random part of the class. It's less about the value more than the mechanics of Eldritch Ward. You are adding a lot for something that probably gonna end up worse than the Shield cantrip most of the time, just to luckshit some extra defense when you get hit. I rather just cut to the chase and luckshit the damage reduction than fuddle around with a shield, even if I like the shield rules of 2e.>No less than the armors from KineticistIt's actually much more than Kineticist's. Neither Metal Carapace or Hardwood Armor actually scales up to Heavy Armor or grant the Bulwark trait. Sentinel can't grant any unarmored class Heavy Armor like that. This have armor specialization which is usually a separate feat nor comes at Level 1. And again, it auto-scales up and at a faster rate than innate armor like Scaly Hide or Reinforced Chassis. When I say it is poachable, I mean that anyone with +3 STR wants it and can get it cause it would be one of the freest armors in existence. Multiclass Warlocks may have to wait to L4, but it still would be entirely worth it.I will say it already does feel like a class that can fit in with the current roster. Occult Kineticist does sound fun.
>>97831574My idea with Ward is to have a Shield+ cantrip that you can keep raised for +2AC when you get the sustain feat at 12. That's why I didn't add it to Shell like Metal Carapace and Hardwood Armor have their shields. Also so I could improve them separately, but mainly for the later sustain. Will tweak the numbers, though.Shell is a better Armor in Earth, because why do 5/1 when you can do 6/0?

Long time MtG player (17 years?) and with what's happening to the game rn, i don't really have much interest in any of the new sets. Sorcery looks like it could maybe scratch that itch. The art is fantastic and reminds me of legacy MtG art. Anybody here play?I watched a few overview vids, but I'm curious how the actual gameplay goes. For someone who plays mostly EDH, are there any similarities? Is it usually a 2 player match? How long are the matches usually? Is it as much of a money pit as MtG?Convinced a few of my MtG friends to give it a shot based off of the art alone. Just need an idea of what I'm up against in terms of learning curve.
>>97821717The water decks are pretty dominant right now, but there's still a lot of competitive builds, also people are still trying to figure out what works in general. Cards like Atlantean Fate can be pretty brutal.

>>97825684>Here's how an actual game would workoh shit there I go forgetting that I'm actually a nogames and the fact we're playing like this doesn't countIt's improv; the classic "yes, and..." rule. Why are they asking about a blacksmith? Is it because the party just found a McGuffin in the dungeon and are hoping an NPC could tell them what it is, or give them a lead to investigate it? Maybe the DM expected them to look for someone to cast Identify on it and was planning to introduce the College of Mages this session; and when the players take a more mundane route, they get to introduce a new character and new elements to the story.Perhaps the blacksmith was forging the exploding-sword on behalf of a mage of the College - was he set up? Does the blacksmith recoil when they present the McGuffin, shouting "Get that Mage-wrought curse out of my shop!" and throw the half-worked molten ingot at them? The point isn't "holy shit this blacksmith is now the #1 most important NPC in the game"; they're just some irrelevant bozo that the DM could have made up on-the-fly, but instead decided to let the player contribute to the world. If the players latch onto this random NPC for whatever reason, the DM can always say "let's come back to this later once I've had a chance to work on him".I'm not even the DM for the group right now, so attacking me personally isn't super convincing.
>>97791970Sippy fucking bippy

That's just railroading with extra steps. .

How important is artwork and visual aesthetics to a tabletop game?
Important for drawing in people, not as important for player retention but still a relevant factor. Specific aesthetics can draw and repel potential players, but the art is irrelevant if your gameplay is boring/bad. This applies to myriads of other fields/businesses too in regards to logos and advertising.
Autistic rollplayers will seethe nonstop, but the cover art is the first thing you see of any system that's not a word document. (and even then, it might have a cover art)Art does a lot to set the tone, along with the way fluff is written.
>>9783158550% off a rulebook should be artwork if you want a good system
>>97831635>not as important for player retentionTrue, in that the rules and playstyle have to be consistent with the art that drew players in. Otherwise you end up with a supposedly grim post apocalyptic world and you end up with modern fallout.

>>97831177>So is that something you fluff, or you buy them with the suit?I'd talk it over with your ST. Decide how many background points he wants you to spend on the suit/mech and how many inactive perks it has and what each of those perks does. That's how I'd handle it, at least.A lot of the time, the suit wouldn't be anything other than a bunch of soak and probably some Dexterity penalties, but you could use it as a focus for a lot of your magic and the target of a lot of your magic as well.Though I wouldn't copy and paste it for your character, reading about the Alanson Hardsuit on page 656 of the M20 core might give you some good ideas.
>>97831577there is a lot more those are just some examples like i know the shadowlords have a camp that deals (in both meanings of the word) with vampires so they probably know more, but in turn they probably know jack shit about mages and never heard about mummies for examplein game this was somewhat enforced rules wise in 2 to 3ed/revsied by the fact that "kindred lore", "wraith lore" "werewolf lore", "mage lore" and such which represent your knowledge of another splat all costed exp like any normal knowledge ability so every exp your let's say mage spends on vampire lore is some exp they does not spend on another skill or sphere that would help him deal with his splat's usual enemies so when vampires are not currently the focus he is would be seen as falling behind while wod's 20th anni editions use the scholar of other merit that makes you better at rolling in all non combat involving the "other" of your choosing by reducing the difficulty by 2 but makes the same rolls about your usual adversaries and all other splats harder by 1

The duties of the Ordo Hereticus seem like such a mixed bag. Chaos cults and corruption, mutation, rogue psykers, normal corruption of Imperial functionaries. Why are they wearing so many hats?
