For some reason WW decided to let Set roflstomp the Osi
ris Mummies, vampires, & wolf alliance which should arguably BTFO anything given that the splats rarely work together. Yet every other depiction of Set is him being a pissy tantrum throwing retard who could fight his way out of a paper bag.

My only conclusion is that he's some sort of inferalist with a wyrm connection. & when he wants to fight Mummies & the forces of good health gets a massive power upgrade
>>
>>97281112
The issue with the infernalist angle is that Mummies operate on True Faith rules. Set would be double-screwed by 2 weaknesses to faith, being an infernalist vampire.

I want to get into TTRPGs, but have only one person I can force into this. What are some good TTRPGs that work well with two people? Ironsworn? I see some recommendations of that. Any advice for a first timer? Would be the one one running the game as well.
My only experience in this 'field' is running RP guilds in World of Warcraft.
>>
>>97280654
Furthermore, it would be preferred if the game, for this first time, is a bit more simple. Just to dip our toes in. See how it is.
>>
>>97280654
Ironsworn functions more like a board game
D&D/similar is based around party play
I'd recommend GURPS, but you want something simple so I instead recommend Mythras

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.

I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.

Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies.

These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence.

This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.

Edna you beautiful autism machine, I've barely cracked into the PDF of the core book and my physical copy won't be here for several days, besides which I have a CoC game and a Cyberpunk Red game that are going to happen before anything else, so this'll be a ways out.

That being said, from what I've read so far and what y'all have been posting about, I'm hoping for something akin to hyperviolent, body horror version of the Secret World of Alex Mack.

>have you considered supporting the player transforming into one of them
No but the succubus has her own Corruption table. Other than that, that's more for homebrew especially considering how succubi and incubi work in Labyrinthus
>All it would really take is having XP costs for the relevant traits and feats, and maybe a framework
That's a lot of work, balance-wise, especially if you read the succubi and vampire Traits
>maybe a framework to better come up with the rituals to do it
The framework is Oracles+Imagination. You don't always need the game to tell you what to do, just get the idea and go
>a journey to become a THE Tentacle Monster
There are many ways to mutate, mostly through corruption. Mutagens are left vague so you can come up with something. Or make a homebrew.
Most of the stuff I add is often something suggested which is simple, but if it's complex either it requires me to put effort OR to use homebrews as inspiration and currently I'm focusing on testing and making sketches. if you want to can post your ideas in the discord so you can also test them and have other test them too

It is what it is. I was sorta achievement hunting at that point, the character had become pretty strong (being a vampire is actually pretty great, at the potential risk of a death spiral if you ever get captured/defeated) and I had just arrived at the Fae Forest to learn a ton of magic, since the free massive Magic you get as a vampire had been pretty underused so far.

>>97279597
Going off of memory here, when she visited the city her first sewer mission (the homebrew one) went about as poorly as it could've gone without her straight up getting defeated. She had to escort a city official down to a blockage and on the way she almost got defeated by like... three slimes. Because she relied mostly on blocking and so the acid + slimed debuffs were stacking up on account of poor rolls. If she didn't have the clean spell she might've lost there, which would've been insanely embarrassing as she already killed an Orc Boss in his stronghold at that point. Then she encounters a pair of sewer crocs at the mission's objective which messed her up, shredded her armor into nothing and by the end she was at half health. This was all made much worse since I ruled early on that if a vampire feeds while escorting an NPC, they gain +5 Vigilance reduced by 1 per success on persuasion, so I was trying to avoid drinking meaning no healing for free after combat. The problem compounded when she ended up saving a kidnapped girl on the way back. By the end she got like +6 vigilance from the two NPCs seeing her feed and was butt naked.

>I don't recall how it goes in ItO
Similar but deadlier.
Failing a critical damage roll means you're out of action until someone else gets to you and you have a short rest to restore HP. If no one gets to you in an hour you're dead.
Sounds like the Miami 86 helping each other up is faster and fits the fleshwound action run and gun vibe. Combat in ItO can get very deadly very quickly if enough party members get hit and taken out of action. Tends to result in TPK or a few survivors running away in my experience. Might try the 86 method next time.
>>
I'm looking to run Dead Weight for Mothership as an introductory one-shot. Does anyone have experience in tracking/progressing time as the ship falls apart? I'm particularly aware that as written Renato’s body breaches the reactor two hours after the incident. I'm leaning to have this occur about halfway through the night, with the activities needed to jettison the pearl artificially eating up in-game time so the climax at the seventh hour comes at a faster real team pace. However, having the player's work up until that point undone is a bit of a risk.
>>
>>97280269
It makes sense. ItO wants you to avoid combat as much as possible, M86 really wants you to get a shoot out with the cops.
There's also rules for chases, very small, but they're there and you get some example cars and boats so you can use them as reference.

It's a nice ItO clone, nothing crazy, but covers some bases in case you didn't know how to approach them and has some nice inspo. I also got it from the share thread so it's a lot for free.
>>
>>97280484
Secret countdowns never worked for me. You could go the BitD route and have a pizza slice clock on the table, more gamey and players can act accordingly to clear canonical information.
I usually lie a bit because anything you do to inform them of stuff they shouldn't use to decide is gonna break immersion. At that point just make it as dramatic as possible.
>>
>>97280484
try narrating knock-on environmental effects like stuff detaching loudly in the distance or have a fire break out and an alarm go off. if they spend time investigating, give them a fair estimate of time left.

I don't know if they have the same effect. I'm sure someone at some point is saying
>my paid GM did it better
to their friend who had an awful time trying to learn a system with no help from the players. But actual plays create the illusion of normality, if you pay you know it's not normal. People don't compare a home made meal with a restaurant dish, if you friend knit a sweater you're not comparing it with a store bought one, if you grow a tomato just being edible will impress you.
>>
>>97280753
>People don't compare a home made meal with a restaurant dish, if you friend knit a sweater you're not comparing it with a store bought one, if you grow a tomato just being edible will impress you.
While your comparisons are correct, I can say that I have heard from a DM friend of mine that there are indeed people that say things like "Why can't you be like [x]" or "This isn't how [x] would do it".when comparing their current game to another one they're paying for. And while they could be lying, I do see quite a number of places online that seem to convey the opinion that DMs basically exist to cater to the players, and not to take a specific role in a group game, so a paid dm experience might be seen as more...I don't want to use the word normal, let's say more [expected] than you or I want to believe.
>>
>>97280641
If we're gonna talk seriously, I think a big part of GMing is setting the tone. Be it roleplay heavy, interaction first, over the top, the GM is talking more than most players so how they present things and what they reward with attention will guide everyone else into what type of "fun" the session is meant to bring.
>>
>>97280804
That really sucks, dude. Your friend has my condolences. There might be bias that I think has been brough up, the type of player that can only play if they pay usually aren't that nice to have around.
>>
The store owner used to slip me some cash under the counter when my game grew to 20+ people every Wednesday. He said Wednesdays started being his 2nd most profitable day of the week.
I burned out though after 6 months, it's just too many people even with multiple dms.

That option is supposed to replace itself every Jump with a new one, like how Nico Nico Knockoff gets left behind because it's funny.

Mind rapist wife is non-negotiable.
>Red Mom kind of seems like she'd fit better discounted for Human than Wasp, though. Kind of hard for her to do her "control everyone around you" thing if you've already turned them into minions that are instinctually poorly disposed towards her and her minions, and if you take the (rightly, it's hilarious) recommended "overwrite control of other Queens' Soldiers" option for Will of the Wasps, she's kind of toothless?
That Companion section is unintelligible chaos, defined by no reasonable order. That said, being a Wasp is the one that guarantees a reason why she can't just control you. Also, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to build to counter her, she's a Companion, not a Drawback.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

IMO the ideal for treasure maps isn't a dungeon but a simpler lair located somewhere in the wilderness. That said, if you don't mind weird technofantasy you could try Lone Colossus of the Akolouthos Sink by Gus L., I seem to recall that being in that range.

I think I have Halls of the Blood King floating around somewhere. Worth considering. Thanks.
>>97280830
Yeah my initial idea was to generate a small lair and give some landmark designators to point them in the right direction when they search for it. (5 miles East of Obelisk, just beyond the lake. Place Obelisk and lake hexes accordingly on hexmap etc.) but I also thought this may be a good way to break up the process of delving such a huge dungeon as Stonehell.
I was considering using The Hyqueous Vaults as it's been recommended by Prince and others. I could also have one of the macguffin rods from the module be bundled up in the map as my player hasn't actually examine it yet (fortunately for me). It's maybe a bit longer than I was looking for, at about 60 rooms, but it's only one floor and has "vault" in the title, so the allure of treasure would be strong.

>Reposting the magic item I came up with the other day as I think the sloppa image I generated for it turned out decent.

What are some of your experiences with BRP or mythras? Favorite stories, characters, or supplements?

I generally like running pulp or horror campaigns. Funniest story setup was how my players thwarted a small series of adventures I planned before it even started.
>Players role up an old priest, a journalist, and basically fred from scooby doo.
>Investigating a series of murders and disappearances.
>Get captured thesmelves and wind up in a rundown factory converted to sort of look likea victorian mansion.
>Meet an obvious vampire who uses them for basic company and conversation before planning to kill them.
>My players escape, the frail priest manages to full nelson the vampire, and the other players manage to use a stake to kill him.

It ended what I planned to be a multi session adventure in one night. It was a lot of lucky roles and ended up with being funny.

>Warlords of Alexander
Never knew about this. I will have to look into it. There are so many good roman source books, cthhulhu invictus by golden goblin is really good alongside mythic rome, but greek is pretty hard to find.

is there a notable difference between mythras and runequest glorantha outside of glorantha being tied to a world? as far as i understand it mythras is just runequest 6 and glorantha runequest 7?
how do both of them compare to BRP which OP posted?
>>
>>97280321
yeah, there are a lot of small differences between runequest glorantha and mythras. RQG ican only do glorantha. It is aheavily built upon oldschool runequest. Mythras developed differently based on the two mongoos editions. Brp i find to be slightly worse. I do like brp derived systems though. Magic world is great. It is probably the best d100 system for faux dnd style fantasy along with openquest if you are into lite games.

So how do those cons compare to BRP?
>>

brp is more generic and tries to simulate a lot of different genres of games. Most people dont even use it for fantasy because there is magic world as mentioned before which is a fantasy hack of brp+stormbringer.
This mirrors my own personal experiences as well as i have played different stuff in brp but never a fantasy game with it

>You all meet in the tavern of an isolated village. It's seven in the morning, and everyone is having their breakfast.
>You see in the corner a young man in studded leather chatting animatedly with an older woman in heavy armor.
>A young woman lets out a cheer as she beats a man of the same age in an arm wrestle. He wears a suit of gleaming gothic half-plate, while she wears a hauberk and gambeson. After the contest has ended, the pair enjoy a hearty meal of turkey and maize together.
>An old man wearing a ragged cloak over equally ragged clothes nurses a cooling cup of coffee while watching their antics, stirring in a spoonful of sugar after an exploratory taste.
>A woman sat on a stool by the bar takes in one last drag of her cigarette before she stubs it out in an ashtray. With that out of the way, she tucks into a pumpkin pie that is waiting for her.
>A man with dark skin pays for his meal with several unfamiliar coins, before brushing past you on his way out the door. He wears a vest made of soft leather over a loose cotton shirt, and has a long sword in a sheath strapped to his back, ready to be drawn at any moment.
>A young girl greets you animatedly and offers you menus. She asks if any of you were interested in buying some of the potato and rabbit stew that is currently cooking, or if you'd like rooms for the night.

What does your latest tabletop character do in this situation?

You know damn well that's what Gygax meant when he put "studded leather" in D&D.

My character internally cringes at all the various anachronisms that are ruining the mood of the renaissance fair, while giving an especially dirty look to the woman who can't go without a cigarette for a few hours; a scorn born more from jealousy than disgust as he has to stop himself from reflexively reaching for a box in his shirt pocket that hasn't been there for years.

He mentally chides himself for taking the contact seriously and researching how to behave at the fair only for everyone else to care even less than he did. Yet, out of a sense of spite he decides he might as well keep up the act and do it right even if nobody else does. He takes a seat and though he declines the stew and room, he orders some bread and cheese to blend in. He's more of an eggs and bacon kind of guy, but forces himself to scarf it down as he knows he'll need the energy for later.

He absentmindedly chews on the scarce fare as he keeps an eye out for the contact and tries to stop himself from chuckling at the noodle-armed office nerd losing in arm-wrestling to the roided out dyke pretending to be an amazonian. A few minutes turns into dozens and he decides he'll just have to do some legwork and look for the contact himself. As he pays, he wonders whether he should leave a tip with the plastic coins that the fair uses and decides he might as well, as he'll just bill the client for the expenses anyway. Serves him right for this joke of a meetup point.

It's funny because nowhere in the stale pasta does it ever mention being a medieval, a fantasy world or anything even unrealistic once you realize the previous two don't apply. It's easily explained by just being a bunch of shitty LARPers in a modern setting and a retarded narrator, AKA (You).
Also, on my way out of the tavern, my character notices a small smelly brown dwarf (manlet) in a corner making a retarded thread on /tg/ so he kicks his ass. Fuck you.

As for elves = indistinguishable from actual demons for longer than people remember.

I'm making Magitek that runs off Rei Ayanami bondage.

>To elaborate, magic can only be harnessed by human thought in my verse. If you want to create Magitek, you need to somehow figure out a way to get some human to run it forever and ever.
>Their solution was simply to take a particularly excellent female Mage, clone her, and use the Clones as the main component in creating magic using Spaceships/Airships and Mecha.
>The clones are usually young girls that are engineered to be emotionless, submissive, and highly intelligent so that they can be turned into sapient tools. The real controllers (ie captains) are usually normal young male soldiers that subdue these clones to their will.
>The mechanism that harnesses the clones' power is designed to literally bind them and turn them into passive objects for the human controllers. The usual design is just the clone bound to a cross while dressed in a white jumpsuit (barefoot, of course) while the pilot sits in the seat and does all the actual fighting.

You could say the girls are basically just U.I. slash concubines for the male pilots. It's dirty business, but it works. And more often than not motivates pilots to fight harder so that their Core doesn't think they're cowards.

I'll be honest, I ripped a lot of stuff from the Elder Scrolls, Warhammer, Fromsoft Games, Game of Thrones, Etc, I took some names and place ideas from Bathory albums for my Viking Lands and People

Isn't that just Melfina in Outlaw Star

Realistically what would life in a world of superheroes where your ability is defined by your bloodline be like? Would eugenics be common place in such a world? Would government affect them if the abilities could range from pointless to Homelander level at best?
