Welcome to /wbg/, the official thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games. Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art (either created by you or used as inspiration for your work). Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback or post whatever relevant input you might have!Last thread: >>97165346Resources for Newfags: https://sites.google.com/view/wbgeneral/Worldbuilding links: https://pastebin.com/JNnj79S5 (embed) (embed)https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/view/Eo+fK41FKVR7xDpbNO0a0N4k0YYxrmyrhX3VxnM14Ew/Fantasy map generator: https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator/wbi/: https://discord.gg/6ZjEc7dy4TWorldbuilding Hub: https://discord.com/invite/wGjxK3YThe Writer's Forge: https://discord.com/invite/CUxHxWqTira: https://discord.com/invite/f52W6KgComment too long. Urban fantasy or modern fantasy as some might put itIs it more interesting to have magic, magical races and creatures be hidden from common knowledge or out in the open that to the point seeing a dragon flying over the city is just a another common occurrence?

>>97397912A masquerade is much more common, easier to world build for since most of real history still happens, and much easier to get people to relate to what is happening since it uses the real world as reference. An urban fantasy setting without masquerade has a much more difficult time world building but also a lot more creative freedom in how the existence of the supernatural impacts the modern world and you have a lot more stuff you can come up interesting things for.
>>97397912The latter. Hidden magic generally either involves either ass worldbuilding or contrivances on the level of "the planet is sentient and fucks with people's senses to keep them from realizing magic exists when they really fucking ought to". Or shit magic.>>97398024>A masquerade is much more common, easier to world build for since most of real history still happens, and much easier to get people to relate to what is happening since it uses the real world as reference. This presupposes that the setting is meant to be some equivalent of the real world Earth.Literally nothing stops you from doing a masquerade on an alternate "present" or past or future for that matter.
>>97398087>This presupposes that the setting is meant to be some equivalent of the real world Earth.>Literally nothing stops you from doing a masquerade on an alternate "present" or past or future for that matter.I guess, but at that point you're getting the worst of both. Like it's much harder to world build since you have to do it for both a hidden and open world and people will have less ways to relate to it.Could still be fun though.

Draw a card.Defend and keep your battlefield? Draw a card.Defend and use one of the MANY Purple "haha no combat for you" abilities? Draw a card.No once per turn, no exhaust, nothing gating it at all.Pair it with the fact its got one of the best color pairs means Draven is fucking absurd.>Red gives it great Spell-based removal options, both in offense and defense>Purple gives it bounces, retreats, card draw and now a counterspellAnd again, if you try to actually play the game against Draven and attack, then he uses something like Fight or Flight to "nuh-uh" your attack, that's him winning a combat. That Fight or Flight replaced itself.Kai'Sa was busted because it let you use premium-costed spells with less of a detriment by paying for Power costs, but her decks at the very least were beholden to card advantage

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help: >n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0 >Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128 >Need a starter dungeon? What's the closest to a BotNS or Dying Earth module/setting for OSR? Ideally ready made for B/X or OSE. I fucking love science fantasy, especially if it can easily be played for a while without the players knowing the true nature of the setting.

It also makes Heavenly Restriction just the strongest option. Getting an extra 2 points and having 250x human physical stats at the effective cost of 3 points, or just 2 if you are a drop-in, puts you ahead of essentially every other choice because you have 7 more points that you don't have to worry about dividing between cursed energy and talent like all how Sorcerers and Cursed Spirits have to.
>>97396731Looking at the cast I thought there'd be at least one criminal, like fredrick sounds like he'd be one but he's apparently a performer? It's actually nice to see how different our doctors and insane crafters are despite or because of how much the cyoa leans on one or the other for the tech tree.

What's the most "modern" a fantasy setting can feel without it feeling forced or weird?
>>97392985The one with the axe is an engineer/sapper.
Depends on what makes a given individual feel like something is "forced" or "weird".
>>97390879Right now. Fantasy has always been about present times, it's not like if Tolkien did it mostly in not! late antiquity we need to be on his boat.
>>97396825>Right now.Fantasy right now feels forced and weird though.
>>97390879I mean, I think generally any setting in today's world without changes is probably going to feel a little weird as a TTRPG, because it probably can't avoid contemporary political issues as framing for the setting. I think you could probably manage up to early 1900's (noir and gangster/prohibition themed games could be fun) or skip over modern and shoot for nearish-future (CP2077 as an example). I don't think anyone really wants to play a game framed by current politicians and blm riots or any of that bullshit.

>>97379160It's not marketed as a series of Legos to build my own scenario, and if it was, it would be fucking bad at that. It's marketed as a good king in yellow scenario, but what it actually is is a series of scenes where the keeper describes something creepy happening, and then you leave that room and go to another room where the keeper describes something creepy happening, ad infinitum. Detwiler is a great writer, I enjoy his DG fiction, but his scenarios are all the same shit, either a collection of cut scenes or a bunch of information that the PCs will have no way to find out or interact with, usually with a single, hyper specific thing they need to accomplish to get any kind of resolution. He does everything that every single person with half a brain will tell you is terrible gming, but people lap it up because he's been grandfathered in as a """""great scenario designer""""" because he worked on the original DG.
>>97364632>shotgun scenario about using ICE operations as a cover to finish off a ghoul cult that DG couldn't get rid of during the Biden years>players have to make regular drive rolls to escape Will Stancil's clapped out honda fit while boxing up captured ghouls into an unmarked fedvan>+20 to a persuade roll if they make a reference to Elon, GrokAI, or twitter while trying to evade confronting the "Lawyer, Master of Black People" without violence
>>97364572Want my honest opinion? Modern Delta Green should set its primary scenario as mankind nearing a state of potential apotheosis into a Mythos entity, purely because of our increasing violence, self-destruction, and careless pursuit of higher sciences. Have every act DG commits to save mankind be the exact same thing that's going to drive it to become something nightmarish. Have it be EASY for operatives to hide themselves, get gear, do what they want with impunity, but always make those methods disturbingly callous and wasting huge amounts of human life (that nobody seems to really care gets wasted). Make it so that sometimes, an operation succeeds purely because the entity they were pursuing realized how fucking dangerous earth is now, and decided to leave while the gettin' was still good.

Why is there so much whinging about 'No Games' on this board? I understand that those who come here solely with the intention of discussing tropes and the like can be frustrating to deal with, but there seem to be some folks here who make it their mission to drop bursts of negativity in threads they should've known would enrage them. And even in these threads that hold more general discussion, I don't see how nearly all of them are not at least tangentially related to traditional gaming.
>>97393693>You want to shout over everyone elsr and abuse the permissability of the board's posting rules for your own benefit. When you disrespect the space you disrespect all the people in it. Since you've disrespected us, we disrespect you in your threadsWell said.
>>97391485In the past, it was in general expected that the majority of people engaging in a thread are playing or running, or have played or run games. Even if the thread or topic itself may not be directly related to actual games, most anons would talk about the topic with a /tg/ background of some sorts.Fa/tg/uys can have a wide variety of interests that naturally come with playing or running games. Not just fantasy- and scifi-media, but also history, mythology, science, arms and armor, art and craft and much more. And sometimes the discussion gets sidetracked into something off-topic, but highly interesting and engaging for everyone, and then loops back around into being made specifically for the sake of games, be it as world-building background, or turning something into a creature, or coming up with cool mechanics or campaigns. This reputation could mean that people from other boards come here to start some general fantasy, scifi or history discussion. But as long as they could keep up a good disguise and as long as the majority of people talked about these things with a /tg/-background, all was good. But over time, more and more people treated this place as "general fantasy shitposting board", after they jumped over from /a/ or /v/ to vomit some stupid idea into the catalog about elves, or make this a battlefield for fighting some perceived political enemy no, I'm not picking sides, all of you suck The general decline of quality on the whole website, and the sudden spike of popularity of traditional games over the last years didn't help. The overall increase of stupidity and vitriol makes it much more apparent when something or someone is just not /tg/, and anons will be less inclined to engage with a thread in good faith. In fact, man anons don't have faith anymore.
>>97392302OP didn't make a point beyond crying about people "being negative".So why come to a games board if you don't want to talk about games?
>>97391485>Why is there so much whinging about 'No Games' on this board?because no games make trite, shit threads for talking in circles vaguely about traditional games, but never any fruitful conversation.>but there seem to be some folks here who make it their mission to drop bursts of negativity in threads they should've known would enrage thempost something good, get something good. post something shit, get called a retard and told to end your own bloodline. post something not related to fitness in /fit/, get called a dyel. post something not related to games in /tg/ get called a no games. simple.>And even in these threads that hold more general discussion, I don't see how nearly all of them are not at least tangentially related to traditional gaming.because the conversation is endless and almost never tied back to traditional games. any "magic" thread has this problem. endless masturbatory imagining about how the magic system vaguely works in theory...it's element based! it's medieval occult! it's vancian! it's psionics not magic! magic is just science! blah blah blahbut never does anyone ever say "okay, here's how to works mechanically and here's an anecdote about how it played at my game table" which is the actually interesting part. talking about ideas is for faggots who imagine writing a book and think they're a writer, but never finish a chapter. it's endless circle jerking about the idea, never any playing. it'd be like if /fit/ or /ic/ were filled with people who talked about fitness and drawing, but never actually lifted or drew... oh wait.Personally, i'm fine with non gaming related posts that talk about things ACTUALLY related to /tg/: established settings, miniatures, 3dprinting, the wider market and "gaming community," but if the topic never actually ties back to /tg/ then it's on the wrong board. the art threads are fine however. I like them. I save them to my pinterst boards.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
