GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

I think there's an anti-tank rifle in one of the books which has a chance of dealing damage to the user, so there is precedent. It's hard to make a general rules, because ST covers both strength needed to lift and aim the weapon and to manage its recoil, while Rcl isn't based on recoil force or even felt recoil, but instead by how much the gun throws its aim off when fired, so a high Rcl could mean a powerful gun or just a light-weight one. I think the best option might be if ST+Rcl exceeds some multiple (maybe 150%) of your ST, then damage might be possible, but the amount is hard to determine.
>>97833870
I think you've basically covered it. I believe everything in old Low-Tech and High-Tech now has 4th edition rules. Very little of Bio-Tech, Ultra-Tech and Steam-Tech remains 3rd ed only. Don't think there is anything in Magic which hasn't been replaced. Most of Compendium I is redundant. 3rd ed Horror is almost entirely replaced by 4th ed version + Madness Dossier. Fantasy doesn't seem to have anything not converted (but the extra supplements are still valid). Vast majority of other books still have at least some useable material. Even the Basic Set has the solo adventure.
>>
>>97834051
I know it's subjective, but how good are the 3rd edition books? I'm interested in the historical setting books, like Old West, Imperial Rome, and also Religion.

Considering that those books are highly recommended for non-Gurps games, go for it.
They are usually very well researched, with a high focus on what makes those settings and periods interesting for gaming.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

We are playing ACKS2.
>>97833680
Yeah, our party has been a bit hesitant to hire henchmen especially the spell casters but I am playing a Venturer which are weak in combat. Because of this I went all in on henchmen early and they really clutched the fight, they held the important flank and the +1 AC from the bard's inspire courage stopped 5 hits on the party by my count.
I think my group has been a little to 5e brained but I think this fight proved that all the extra help was critical and hopefully they will recruit some more guys when we get back to town.1

might be a standard in ACKS since I haven't read it but the growth time seems too quick? a baby needs at least a couple of years to be a toddler and if we are waiting for an adult than at least 14-15 to allow for reproduction.
anyway Human herding will likely be very niche since raiding for humans or demanding tribute from a local settlement or even just ruling a town with an iron fist would be easier. it might be a thing in the underdark or otherwise very desolate lands.

When it comes from OSR, I admit I dunno from magic users (though I really like Duo Dimension and thst one "Pockets" spell), but doesn't this one risk breaking Spells Per Day, a given spellcaster could, at the end of the day convert their spells into potions ajd have that many to cast on top of the next days' spells.

How important is artwork and visual aesthetics to a tabletop game?
9 replies and 2 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>97831585
Not important enough to give the TTRPG explosion in the 2010s any long-scale hold. All of these games with interesting art have been forgotten. Player count is the single most important thing to a tabletop game and legacy systems have new and old players locked down.
>>
>>97834161
I don't know anon. Even if you take the art as "GM facing", the art the GM sees on the book can inform the way he describes monsters and locations.
>>
>>97831585
A TTRPG is a set of rules on how a certain reality works, that a set group of players agree to abide by when playing collaborative pretend. This means that, the more the players and GM are on the same page, the better, and good artwork is second to none in setting a mood and expectations for your players. I argue that a coin and a copy of an artbook like Godhusk or Vermis is enough to play a TTRPG, and that a solid ruleset without images causes more clash between players and GM expectations.
>>
>>97834213
>the more the players and GM are on the same page, the better

This is why you should not give the players any source of information except the GM's own mouth. If you show a picture to five different people, you will get five different interpretations.
>>
>>97831585
Not at all.
It only exists to rope in normalfags.
The only things that matter are (in descending order):
Quality of text-editing and text layout
Accessibility to information
Extensive playtests the game had (most games don't have any, which is why they are so shit)
Quality of rules themselves (a bad game with good text editor is better than good game with insufficient editorial effort)
Simplicity of the game itself (anything you can't explain to newfag under 30 minutes has issues, anything you can't explain to newfag under 45 is a bad game)

Everything else is a total non-issue and non-factor. If the game is either sold on lore or artwork, you are looking at a bad game, no ifs or buts
And people who make endless threads throwing fits about artwork in games are the epitome of never-game.

Hey /tg/ I have a problem. One of my players is a genuine incel. He's 27 and I'm pretty sure he's never had sex. He definitely hasn't gotten laid in a while. He's not really ugly just kinda weird and awkward. I feel bad for him. But he is taking his extreme thirst out in the game.
>every time his character, a human eldritch knight, comes back from our adventures he always tries to play up the angle of "we saved the town, where are the girls to suck my dick as thanks?"
>he constantly talks about how his character is 6 foot 2 (he's 5 foot 8 irl)
>he talks out of his ass a lot about medieval times and says that peasant girls were way healthier than modern women.
>says how farmers would be begging to marry their lithe 17 year old daughters to him
>he talks about medieval demographics and criticizes the DMa works building (which is actually kinda shit to be fair) >you can just tell how excited he is talking about how there should be a dozen villages between these two cities on the map, like he is stopping just short of talking about how many nubile virgin farm girls are there for his fighter to fuck
We tried talking to him about it but he twisted it around to make the rest of us sound like we were fucking gay or something. Also his character is too important to the story to kick him, and running him as an NPC would suck the fun out of it since there's be a lot of the DM just roleplaying with himself while the rest of us watch.
So....any advice? Its not worth ruining the game over by kicking him, and nothing is so blatant to be a clear social violation, but the dude is just oozing incel energy and I feel like I should subtly suggest to the DM something that will set his head on straight, and possibly help cure his mindset. Any ideas?

If funny, haha. His character can pay for them.

>>he constantly talks about how his character is 6 foot 2 (he's 5 foot 8 irl)
Cool. Most characters will be well fed and nutritioned, so that's not an unreasonable stature.

>>he talks out of his ass a lot about medieval times and says that peasant girls were way healthier than modern women.
Remind him that you really don't fucking care about historic, this is a fantasy game.

>>says how farmers would be begging to marry their lithe 17 year old daughters to him
Tell him to masturbate before coming to games nights then.

>>he talks about medieval demographics and criticizes the DMa works building (which is actually kinda shit to be fair)
Migration and trade did exist, and unless lore says otherwise, will probably exist in this setting. Any big city will have multiple ethnicities to spy, don't be a fag who insists cities must be fully monoethnic.

>We tried talking to him about it but he twisted it around to make the rest of us sound like we were fucking gay or something.
It's not about being gay or faux-purity (we all wank). It's about sidetracking the plot with unnecessary horniness.
Even in a dedicated erpg, where horniness is anticipated, sex scenes are a terrible idea because they derail the session and take up game time.

Also his character is too important to the story to kick him, and running him as an NPC would suck the fun out of it since there's be a lot of the DM just roleplaying with himself while the rest of us watch.
Well that's your stupid idea.
You can just cut him out and fudge still. If your game is as shitty as it seems to implicate itself to be, a bit of 'rolling with it' won't do anything too bad.
Kill off his character. Fucking do it. Flip the script.
>>
>>97833928
>my player is... engaged with my worldbuilding and is interacting with the NPCs
Buddy, if you consider that a problem player you have no idea how bad things can be. Tell him that you're not comfortable with the way he talks about sex all the time and that those themes aren't going to be something you want to go into at the table. If you're giving other players girlfriends and romantic side stories then, well, you've already made your bed and now you need to lie in it with him.
I'm going to end this with some sanctimonious bs about how if he harasses anyone in real life in YOUR house where YOUR wife with lopsided tits lives then you BETTER kick his ass to the curb.

>they aren't allowed that?
Assuming you're in good faith, I'll put it this way. Yes, the forced diversity by itself is already bad and corporate, and no, the cookies by themselves don't make this reproachable, but there is a collection of little things in the image that, separate, are harmless, and together are fake and gay.
It's the forced diversity + the cookies + the performative male feminist haircuts + the basedcuck facial expressions + the cat + the guy on the left being such a faggot he'd wear sandals to a forge + him being the whitest male in there and taking the cookies to the brave women and racial minorities in a subliminarly subservient position + the excessive gay bear porn muscle glimmer + the hammers looking like MCU mjolnir + the art just looking bad.
None of those things, in a vacuum, would completely ruin an image, just like having either AIDS or the flu won't kill you.
The top pic is just male power fantasy, a guy taunting whoever's facing him, 2 weapons in hand for double ass kicking. It fits better a game that dedicates so many pages to combat.

Also bought this guy for later on in the league at higher points I'll buy a foot hero for chaos and use him for it. Wargame Foundry's Chaos Samurai. IK their stuff is too small even for middlehammer but he's nipponese he gets to be short

Do whatever you like, like I said - it's a cool concept. Just make sure he do look like a knight that went to chaos wastes and back. And since he proved himself to Khorne, he would have plenty of chaos gifts like horns and chaos armor fused to his skin, so you probably want an explanation why /yourdude/ still resembles a bretonnian knight, instead of regular chaos knight.

Most people tend to forget that chaos armor is basically a mutaded armor. Warriors in Chaos Wastes mutate and their shit mutates with them, be it their armor or their horse. I mean, sure - some buy armor that already looks like a chaos armor, but is basically heavy armor. True chaos armor is armor that was twisted by energies of the warp. So - give enough time to a bretonnian knight on Chaos Wastes and he WILL look like a chaos warrior, even if he didn't buy anything from Karak Dum or chaos dwarfs (or just take from a fallen enemy).

Right. They could GM themselves if they gave a fuck, but they don't, so they have no right to complain. That's what happens when you willingly give up your agency.

Way of the Samurai Edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPED A GAME
IT IS PLAYABLE. IT HAS BEEN PLAYED.
EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, explore & fight each other for victory and profit.

3 versions of the rules exist, 2 of which have been playtested. The main one is 2e, to be found :

as with maps, tokens and lore resources.

Prophet-Bureaucrat, above Ozymandias
>Uses divination to run the economy and administration of the Lemurian core territories
>There are no bureaucratic mistakes, only the whims of Fate
>"Famine relief was not in the plan, only the famine itself."
