Can a martial based character be the BBEG?

You don't need to build NPC enemies around the same restrictions of PCs.

That's not what we're trying to say. The fantasy of what a BBEG is supposed to be is basically a one man army with also legions of minions at his disposal right? You get visions of characters like Sauron or the Lich King, even if you singled them out they would win the 1v1+the few guys you brought. But both of them have absurd magic and artifacts at their disposal. They're not really 'martials'.

A singled out martial BBEG would just get action economy'd to death and pelted with so many save or suck spells it would probably be embarrassing. That's why I was making the point he'd need a lot of support like the real world leaders you're thinking of. Or the use of a lot of magic artifacts. Or you'd need to make him a Hercules tier demigod with such ridiculous strength and resilience. Possibly some combination of these three.

>That's not what we're trying to say.
It still boils down to exactly that no matter how many times you repeat yourself.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Oh, I see! Then I can update my archive with this information. Sorry about the confusion, but the current incarnation is very different from your first one.

Your first attempt is from 2015, right?
>>
>>97710718
No, anon, it can't be from 2015. It should be probably around 4-5 years ago. That's the time when I started to study the wargaming roots of rpgs. I didn't post it anywhere else, but here.
I'm also the same guy who made the rebrandly-d0t-osrg trove.
I'm from turkey and this site is banned here so I don't frequent this board much; posting only when it's possible.

Speed duel is pretty smooth because you just play things. Theres no resource and no main phase 2 to manage so you know
>Do everything that isnt attacking now
>Attack
>Turn is over
The cards also tend to be from earlier on so you are doing things like
>Play Legendary Ocean
>Summon a big fish
>Attack with big fish
>Oh they used a trap to raise their monsters attack
>Activate tornado wall in response so I take no damage from this
Turn is over. It's pretty smooth. The game is strange because the effects are written long but they are written in a way that makes unique abilities that play out as written. It doesnt contain very complicated cards like modern yugioh
>>
>>97710906
As I have played Pokemon I often try to evolve my digimon, I know they keep their powerful traits but they often get btfo by someone using resource to just bring out a bigger body with a solid effect anyway, is that common?
>>
>>97711025
clearly the intent of the game is to go super fast all the time now
they just wanted you to do that with New Product when playing purple decks instead of Same Product You Have Been Using For 16 Sets With Maybe 1 Different Level 6
in that sense all the hits make sense
there's no putting the toothpaste back in the tube

I loved the Dark Vengeance box set, it's maybe the platonic ideal of a box set and I wanna sell off all the rest of my 40k crap and get a new one to keep as a collectable and play as a board game.

What are some fun ideas to keep the gameplay dynamic and interesting? Has anyone tried making character progression charts for your own wargames? What can we do to get the most replay value out of a limited selection of models?
3 replies omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>97706291
While the idea of a pre-canned board game experience is noble, what makes dark vengeance the best to do that with? Just from looking at the included miniatures the dark angels will have an advantage. Would you be making totally custom rules for all the included units?
>>
>>97707283
>Just from looking at the included miniatures the dark angels will have an advantage.
Of course they will. There needs to be a designated winner and loser side, so redshirts can let a prospective buyer play the stronger side to make him feel better after winning and encourage him to buy the game. And since half the 40k is marines...
>>
>>97707576
I would basically be crafting a new set of rules for it to work. But I want to introduce some kind of progression so that repeated games have something to get excited for. Upgrades like +1 to wound or even whole new special abilities for a unit would be fun to introduce.

I'm actually surprised to see how un-talked about the concept is. Checking Yaktribe and Dakkadakka, it seems like once people have their box set they just treat it like some new models. I feel like there could be a whole new dimension of the hobby for people making custom games out of the big starter sets that release every year.

Treating their models more as a cast of characters in an ongoing story, each time the box gets played that narrative moves forward a little bit. Let people feel like they're getting $200 dollars worth of gameplay out of it.
>>
>>97706291

What was with GW and multi-melta dreadnoughts back in the day? Was the idea that you'd think the set was a bargain but never actually use it?

Cool models though. Wonder if there was a reason they were pushing dangles instead of ultrasmurfs.

>>97707576

I remember when 3E came out and it was 10 marines and a landspeeder bowing down two Dark Eldar squads. Kinda brilliant marketing in hindsight.
>>
>>97707647
Unironically check out Mordheim or Necromunda. Basicly you have you warband of up to 15 or so dudes, they gain experience and level up as the campaign progresses. Would be an awesome source of inspiration for what you are trying to do.

There is already a line of shitty Dark Souls and Elden Ring board and card games and D&D splats by SFG. There is also another line of Bloodborne board games by another studio.
If you're not EOP you can play the full game as a trpg from start to finish with this handy 600 page manual based on the earlier Dark Souls TRPG by the same group (not the SFG one)

Various AD&D/OSR threads are full on cancer with autism shitfights and gay nonsense.

I am looking to run a megadungeon game for some people who never played anything older than 3.5. I've played some of them but it was a while back myself, and I've been mostly doing retroclones for the last little while.

So what I'm asking is to get some takes on AD&D, B/X, AD&D 2e, and BECMI.

Names: Rule Complication vs usefulness, ease of learning, strengths/weaknesses, and ease of acquiring physical copies of the book(s). I don't need any modules and minimizing splats is ideal, so if you feel like any of these "cannot be enjoyed" without X extra book(s) please include that information as well.

>Feel free to stone me but i like CMI. I think test of the warlords is a cool module, domain play & war battles should get more love.
I don't really remember the rules for mass combat, but I assume they must be divorced from your PC. That's completely fine, but it's a different game. It's like you're playing D&D to level 20 or whatever, and then you set aside the sheet and say "Ok, now we're breaking out the rule set for Bolt Action and having a battle between your army and the Zionists'. Same thing for domain play, it's a completely different game. It always seems to me if you prefer domain/mass combat, why not jump straight to that instead of the penalty of "first we have to have a 12 months IRL campaign to see if you can make it to the part you prefer."

And if you don't prefer it, it's like you're penalized for reaching 20th level (which is why 95% of campaigns end/retire characters before they get to that level). Or it's like a computer chess game that, if you reach Master level, suddenly switches to backgammon.

I don't play WH40k and won't be playing Trench Crusade either, but I'm aware of it due to various posts and social media. I fucking guarantee there isn't a single black woman who will be playing Trench Crusade. Not fucking one (and no, I don't count if they're paying one to play in promotional materials or something). And so therefore what kind of grovelling faggotry compels them to insist upon making prominent art depicting a black female space marine equivalent?

Not the anon you replied to, but Paradox, generally, is fucking blind and stupid, they'd not be the sort to be receptive to fan sentiment. You can basically see why the first version of B2 got canned in the Paradox press release around the swap of studios.

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/paradox-on-bloodlines-2-we-had-a-game-we-could-do-but-maybe-not-with-the-team-we-had

>The site also thanks Hardsuit for their work to date on the game, adding, “We’d like to take this opportunity to honor Hardsuit Labs for their efforts and thank them for their hard work on the project. The studio has done a tremendous job in laying the foundations for the game and we hope that you, the community, will also appreciate their contribution to Bloodlines 2.”

>The studio has done a tremendous job in laying the foundations for the game

They thanked Hardsuit Labs for 'laying the foundations' of a game delayed several times. They do this in February 2021, when the game was meant to release somewhere in 2021.

In essense, it appears there just wasn't a game. There were models, a story, some half-baked systems and other stuff. Hardsuit Labs proved unable to actually make a game, no matter the amount of delays and money, so they were dropped, with even the public statmenents basically saying they failed to deliver in any way.

To get off the Jobhan topic.

What are you guys favorite perks to create magical/spiritual environments and resources (preferably passivly)? I want to be able to cultivate and make mystical exliars, in settings without mystical resources.

But I don't want to manually lug around territory, mines, farms and zoo's.

So far the only perk I know of that helps in this regard are.

Magical/Divine/Fae/Infernal Boon (600 CP) from arsmagica:
You naturally spread your realm’s aura in any territory you control. If you are a magical
creature, you spread a magical aura; a divine creature spreads a divine aura, etc. The aura’s strength increases slowly with time, though you may halt its growth or decrease
its strength if you wish.
In addition, you gain a boon dependent upon your realm affiliation:
As a magical creature, you create sources of vis wherever you spread your magical aura.

>"Alchemists are often cultivators but not universally. I'm not going to get in trouble for teaching you."
One idea I’ve had is alchemy, enchanting, and arrays are together known as the mortal magics, because mortals can use them, they take less time to learn, and with enough skill can reach the level of the second stage of cultivation.

Oh all the gear and stuff is ventis. He just rented the room itself. Wasn't sure if it'd be a good idea to have a whole alchemy set up in the pocket manse. Fumes without fresh air and all that.

>because mortals can use them, they take less time to learn, and with enough skill can reach the level of the second stage of cultivation.
I could see that being the case. The second stage is still within the mortal realm. It could make sense mortals could reach that sort of level or feats with magic. All sorts of things vaati can learn.

>Hey, I’m the elf (or at least one of my preferred jumpers is), you’re a Hylian.
True. Its just a bit of a joke on Ventis end. Given between the pointy ears and massive life span going into thousands of years at this point. He may as well be a elf.

Legitimate question: Do the few male Howling Banshees there are get a flat chest armour plate or do they just get the standard breasted plate and wear it though it's hollow? I think the latter would be cool to keep the outward image of a bunch of vicious female super soldiers killing people. Because if a dude joins them to begin with it's because he exhibits the finesse and precision they want, so the guy would already be acting kinda feminine, no?

I don't know where I could look into to get an official answer to this inquiry

Jesus Christ.
No wonder why you've been kicked out of elf general.
Warhammer (all of them) is such trash.

It's condition-on-hit, which is RAW and part of the current monster meta, except you let PCs who invest that avoid it.
(It's also how the potency mechanic in Draw Steel works.)

Do you have any unique ways of introducing new characters to the part after a PC death?
I mean if they're in a populated city or something it's usually easy enough, but what if they're in the middle of nowhere? Or recently I had my party be in small remote village where part of the plot was that nobody was allowed to enter or leave until they solve a task. And one character almost died and I'm glad he didn't, because I was very worried how I'd be able to get a new one in there.

If they have enough HP, drop them from the sky with the full 20d6 and see what happens. If the party has access to Greater Restoration, the character is a petrified statue, having stood there for decades or more.

What's the possibility that another Adventurer has been stuck there since before the PCs arrived?
Maybe they were injured and have only just recovered enough to get up and find out some other strangers have arrived and are trying to find a way out. Perhaps the new PC has discovered some clue to the problem, but has not yet been able to do anything about it. Then they'd have a reason to join and a reason for the party to accept them.

>the character is a petrified statue
Be careful with situations where the new PC is essntially helpless, waiting for the Party to decide to activate them. It's not so bad if it's part of the actual mission (eg rescuing prisoners, one of whom just happens to be a veteran adventurer).

Our group is the kind that would joke about it -
>Hey, this strange statue looks like a petrified adventurer! Shall we de-petrify them and see what they have to say?
>Nah, let's not bother and go on our way!
- but de-petrify them anyway (because we're not complete jerks).

The problem is is that Damage Type doesn't matter ENOUGH to essentially lock yourself into Transmuted Spell for an entire level.
Unless you're fighting stuff on the Plane of Fire and took nothing but Fire Spells, most caster players are smart enough to have at least some variety in their spell slots.
Elemental Vulnerabilities are even rarer/more niche, so its not like you get a fun or useful tradeoff that lets you really put the smackdown on certain monster types.
The problem with Transmuted Spell (and frankly most of the metamagics) is their opportunity cost vs. Heightened and Quickened.
You have two options until you hit 10 and can only swap one on level up. Are you going to take the options that are extremely flexible or consistent or the ones that maybe might be okay sometimes?
Warlocks have the exact same problem with Agonizing Blast but at least they get more Invocations now.
