Why did domain level play fall out of style?
136 replies and 15 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>97837556
this >>97841655 and the fact that it takes a long time to get there, plus not all players might be interested in doing that.
It could be "fixed", more or less, by having PCs starting at higher levels, but that would be antithetical to the D&D tradition of starting at level 1, having the grognards screaming and shitting themselves.
So, domain level play is still largely ignored and underutilized.
>>97842087
Depends on the rules, but I'm currently playing ACKS and I do agree with having starter adventurers at younger age, treating levels as an accumulation of experience (XP) and success (Gold).
>>
Is there any domain game out there where you're not counting profits every <period of time>? Kinda want a game where things are actually static till something happens.

Like, some places will stay villages for centuries and won't grow into towns ever till something changes, like farming/health technology improving. But in games where money literally forms out of thin air in the population's pockets so you can tax it, they kinda assume growth as the default state of the world. That every hamlet will inevitably become a metropolis if given enough time.

Plus a static map (besides random events or important people appearing) just sounds like it would go really well with adventurers shaking things up by clearing pirates, slaying monsters, making allies, dethroning tyrants, etc.

Not that I've actually read up on many of these systems. But I've never heard of such a system with static worlds till something happens. Even though that's how normal games that don't deal with domain play operate since growth isn't a factor in story telling unless, again, it's from adventurers clearing out the Lost Mines of Phandelver, etc.
>>
>>97846195
The closest I could think of off-hand is Rogue Trader, where your wealth is just measured in Profit Factor. And the typical way of increasing PF is to establish a new colony, trade route, etc. which adds a few points.
PF then isn't spent, but is instead just rolled against to determine if you can acquire goods based on how rare and valuable it is.

Even then things aren't assumed to be totally static, since misfortunes can threaten your holdings and result in a loss of profit factor unless you deal with it. And obviously the goal of Rogue Trader is to become even more wealthy and make as much profit as possible.
But it does still fit with the idea that you're not tracking quarterly revenue from all of your holdings. A mining colony is just a static bonus to your overall measure of wealth unless something bad happens to it or you take the time to improve it in some way.
>>
>>97846288
That sounds pretty good, actually.

Can you spend/reduce PF to, say, reinforce a garrison? I'm assuming that setting up a mining outpost includes a garrison by default and its costs, as well as all other expenditures, are already automatically taken into account when determining profit.
>>
>>97846323
That is generally the correct assumption, where planets are largely assumed to govern themselves and take care of any typical security needs.
Even reinforcing a garrison wouldn't really involve reducing profit factor though. Being able to muster a platoon or an army can also be done with an acquisition roll against profit factor, where the richer you are the more soldiers you're able to reliably get. Same if you wanted to acquire better armor or weapons to kit out your troops.
The closest thing is that there are upkeep tests in situations when an asset is threatened, such as if the army would suffer big losses, or the forge world that supplies your weapons gets attacked. But even on a failed test, that can simply result in a downgrade or downsizing. You're left with a single Company of troops instead of a full Regiment, or their guns go from being the Best quality to merely Good quality due to supply maintenance issues. You can avoid any downgrade/downsizing by taking a -5 to future Acquisition tests, which is functionally similar to a -5 to PF, but it's moreso that those resources are tied up with making up for your stretched supply lines.

To put it another way, a reduction of profit factor represents a massive loss in production capability. It's things like large scale pirate raids or a colony going into outright rebellion. Reinforcing a garrison would be more of a temporary cost in order to get a planet back to normal operation. Or perhaps a full blown Endeavor to upgrade a mining colony into a fortress world, turning it from something that might provide 1-2 PF into a 3-4 PF world, as a rough idea.

I love root.

If you pay with 5 newbs you will not play correctly. You will not finish the game. The players with the non-aggressive factions will probably have a bad time. The players with the complicated factions will have a bad time.

Honestly the only way to really graduate past tutorial level, is to be the only newb in a 4 game, read the rules for your faction before play, have the pros give constant suggestions, and to play each faction at least 3 times, and against each faction 3 times, so with 10 factions thats 10*3*3 so 90 games to get out of the tutorial.

Not to mention things like how Dominance cards bounce out of the discard pile immediately, or what craftable abilities you should actually use.
This is completely ignoring neutral factions or alternative boards.

Then you can actually draft correctly, and then start to learn the game.

I've gotten to play maybe 6 times irl and 5 of those times where with a 5 or 6 player where we didn't finish and at least half the players didn't understand what the fuck they where doing.

Tip 1: you should be getting at least 3 points every turn as any faction.

Something I haven't tried yet, but I might next time I do a session is do an XP system that is somewhere between the boring but easy 1 xp per session and the interesting, but annoying, gold for xp. Im thinking instead to do something like giving xp for each major thing done, and it can be 1,2,or 3 depending on magnitude. maybe each level is 3 or 4 xp. You might do 2 minor things (Like find a stash of 40 silver and beat a group of bandits) for 2 xp, something major like defeating a named villian for 3xp, or very little, like just buying some shit and having conversations for 1 xp.

That way I don't have to bean count every gold, but I can still have a variable amount of progress to the next level.
I wonder if any system does something like this natty? Seems like a happy medium.

Whatever you may think of the idea of martial characters in D&D or any other fantasy rpg basically doing sword magic, it is at least a lot more fun from a gameplay perspective than just going "I make an attack roll" every round.

>Anything that's not "I swing my (weapon) at them" has to be magic.

I hate DnD brainrot I really do.
>>
>>97843743
Actually, characters can have interesting fun things to do that don't require complex rules and aren't difficult for new players to understand, and nothing has to be gated behind arbitrary character types.
>>
>>97843743
>>97844081
It's also a good argument to have an NPC warrior class that can be the dumb mundane 'farmboy with sword' class that gets nothing other than gear and numbers and caps at mid-levels.

Because at a certain point a guy with a sword stops being capable of dealing with the high level monsters that are designed to be able to fly and teleport and have to be capable of countering high level magic. The Fighter character has to become more complicated and start equipping magic items in order to not completely fall behind and continue doing the thing their class was named for.
Might as well be honest about that and bake fancy abilities into the class.
>>
>>97840201
>how many systems have you played where magic is always just a single roll with the same function each time it's used?
Basic Role-Playing and I believe Savage Worlds and the Storyteller system.
>>
>>97846031
>Basic Role-Playing
>with the same function
You use one roll for the others, but all the various magic types (Magic, Sorcery, Psychic Powers, Superpowers, Mutations) have distinct functions. Can't comment on the others.

Glowing Dawn makes more sense since they do pretty much everything together and they’re at least leaving the door open to future support being more solo line focused looking at bt25 Gekkomon and E-Pulse
DATS is more lame cause all the characters already well established decks at this point.

justin man is good in several decks that aren't his own deck. he was good in that weird european cyborg shakkomon deck, he is good in vademon centered digital monster control and he is good in invisimon.

leomon is good in accel chaosmon right now, though that deck does not run the traditional leomon

>>97846090
we heard those set announcements before we heard there was going to be an expansion pack scale dlc for time stranger ( though many of us suspected this) so its pretty obvious there will be one more wave of support. I agree about data squad becoming trait sloppa is fucking stupid. We would be better off with a set themed after the digivice IC with its burst modes that have only been depicted on a digivice. All of those mods having burst modes makes them great for centerpieces of their own decks. Maybe the shift to trait sloppa is a response to their inability to make ghost game good? Gammamon is only finally playable and dirabbitmon and jellymon got left in the dust.
>>
>>97846279
>>97846357
Trait slop is one way to go but even the new stuff with the facedown card gimmick can probably be integrated into the old Gaogamon deck. Depends on how the BT25/26 Tamers work.

I cant see any other suitable thread so I am just going to post here as it is the closest to my question.

How would any of you go about maximising a 2x2 board space? I am thinking of playing five parsecs that recommends 2x2 and I have a 8x2 game board currently. I am thinking of something like a vertical setup with a vertical terrain feature for each 2x2 section of the 8x2 board I have. The board is pretty plain with black gravel and some green patches, not very scifi per say, but I could do some natural looking pillars on the corners of each 2x2 section with a roof and paint them black gravel so it is like the 8x2 board is one big underground level/ship hangar, then have something like 8 towers with a side wall exposed but each tower is a different theme.

Or would it be more practical to just have 4 tower structures with pillars holding them up from the board, kind of like an oil rig, that way it is far more modular conpared to trying to build another 8x2 roof for the board with the other idea?
