This thread isn't to argue over what is and isn't OSR. I am using the broad term definition of the term.Let's leave that shit elsewhere. Now, what I am wondering is what type you like? Are you into simple like B/X clones? Do you like more advanced rules such as 1e/2e? Do you like ultra light like something like knave?Do you want something that mechanically is more or less a pure clone of a published game? Do you like something that merges some more modern ideas such as a acending AC?Or do you like stuff like the black hack, tales of argosa or even shadowdark that took the concept of OSR styles but are not built on those mechanics? This isn't a trolling thread, I am curious on what folks preferences are. What have they read or played they found fun or interesting. For myself, I need a level of church or fiddly. It makes my brain happy so I don't enjoy something too light. B/X and OSE don't really scratch my itch. I need something at lest AD&D level of fiddly. I thought it might be fun to see where other people landed.
>>97901459That is fair. Some of the old art is simply fantastic. I got into D&D with 2e and the art sold it for me.
>>97900582I found B/X a bit simple (and quirky in some areas) and AD&D bit overdone (and lacking in some other areas), so I did what everyone did and made their own game. That's my favourite part of the OSR: people just making their own stuff to do exactly what they want, and most of it being cross-compatible / ripe for stealing from.I prefer the classic, rather limited OSR--a tight focus on dungeon-crawling, gold for XP--rather than the modern "it's all OSR if you really think about it" style. I find it pretty funny that D&D started out as this fairly specific thing and eventually became generic fantasy toolkit game, and then the OSR community appeared to get back to that fairly specific thing, and then new arrivals showed up as it got popular and turned it into generic fantasy toolkit game, and now you've got OSR for OSR (i.e. CAG). But I don't begrudge people doing their own thing, even if I have no idea why anyone would ever want to play Knave or whatever.
>>97901518>I found B/X a bit simple (and quirky in some areas) and AD&D bit overdone (and lacking in some other areas), so I did what everyone did and made their own game.Yeah. To be honest OSE does something like that, optionally, but still not as much as I want.I would say my ideal game is 50% BX, 30% AD&D, 10% stuff stolen from BECMI and 2e, 10% stuff stolen from OSR games
>>97900865>No game will nail down Gygaxian D&D the way it does.By having convoluted systems that don't produce the results they promises and that even the creators wouldn't use themselves? Then it really nails Gygaxian D&D.The stuff I read doesn't share Gary's tone of writing though.

>>97898930Let's be real, critical role hasn't affected tabletop gamers much because we don't use anything branded D&D so that right there already filters them out. Now that people are fleeing 5e because the novelty has worn off and the problems with the game design of it are just too severe to ignore, I might need to tweak my questionnaire to catch them while vetting applicants, but it might be a few years before I have any room opening at my tables so it's not exactly a pressing concern.
Anyone play or want to play historical tabletop wargames in Tokyo? I know theres a WH4K community here, but I can't find any history based ones. I started buying and painting dark age armies. I guess I could also be down for Dragon Rampant if someone has a fantasy based army.
>>97901668I haven't seen historicals but there's tons of non-GW game players in Tokyo. The miniature game flea market earlier this month had people turn up with battletech, crisis protocol, dystopian wars, alien, heavy gear, eisenfront, infinity, aristeia, defiance, black powder, malifaux, etc.Problem is most of these are played at irregularly-held privately-run ゲーム会 in community centers and such so you need to find someone who plays your game first then get invited to wherever they're playing at.Aside from that I hear that Arrows in Akihabara frequently runs non-GW games, never been there myself though because I mostly play in the Tama area.

I get they're akin to clanrats or stabbas that slow down enemies and clog up objectives, but do they need any kind of support? Like if I'm going to run 20 or 30 is it worth bringing a scrivener or Poxbringer or am I better off spending the points elswhere? I heard another anon say that it's not worth trying to buff up their damage. Are they effective screens for rotswords? And who is the preferred foot hero wizard? Is there a lore reason why old techmarines had those weird hand instead of pauldron?
>>97899702So I've not been able to find a deeper fluff reason yet but it was their equivalent of the Chaplain and Apothecary's pauldron symbols.WD 105 - Index Astartes p38"[P]ersonality models will often have shoulder plates, helmets or breastplates of distinctive design to distinguish their specialist role. For example, Chaplain's favour skull-shaped shoulder plates and breastplates, Officers have skull and eagle motifs, Medics are distinguished by the snake emblem, and Techmarines with the claw emblem."The unit stat entries in the same article had common shoulder pad iconograph beside them that matched what that says along with examples for the Librarian, Tactical, Assault and Devastator squads.
In Codex Ultramarines a veteran sergeant always has power armor, even scout veteran sergeants, which is how scout veteran sergeants were in Rogue Trader too, but in Codex Angels of Death veteran sergeants have the same armor as the squad, meaning scout veteran sergeants have scout armor, but in Dark Vengeance Naaman has power armor.

Sorry in advance if this isn't the right place to ask. Genuinely unsure where else on 4chan might be more relevant because I realize this is extremely niche.I'm looking for a marketplace that trades or sells those cards that get dispensed from Japanese arcade machines. Is there any place like that in the English speaking side of the world? As far as I could find, the specific card I'm looking for isn't sold on any Japanese sites. How do you feel about ranges in ttprg systems? Is it better for them to concrete or nebulous? I have a group of friends who are interested in playing OVA and I've never played a game where rangers weren't in increments of 5ft and so it's got me thinking about something I've never had reason to think about before.
Shadow of the Demon Lord is made so you can do either.I definitely prefer having concrete numbers though, it makes things easier to visualize
>>97900861This.concrete with battle maps, nebulous for theater of the mind.
Nebulous, because it makes no fucking sense that a weapon can hit at its maximum range of 60ft just fine but you start taking penalties if the enemy takes one more step back away from you. Not to mention it's annoying as hell to remember which projectile weapons do 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 etc ranges. NOT TO MENTION it's pretty much all useless anyway because most GMs end up shoving all your characters into rooms that never get bigger than like 50-60ft across anyway.I only use concrete measurements when I'm using a grid map and need to figure out if the guy with the Reach weapon should get an extra square of length, but otherwise it's all just nebulous range bands. You're either hitting something at range that's on the other side of the room, or you can hit something multiple rooms in length.
>>97901483This, everything works in theater of the mind, do not over complicate this shit OP.

>>97901972kek. What’s the context?
>>97902145so, our Medtech Donnatello DeSantis (Donnie for short) brought his girlf April Moretti along on a job on the outskirts of the combat zone (they're both italian and she demanded to come with him) and predictably she gets kidnapped by tyger claws, he gets a call while we're at the bar on her number and it's a kidnapper by the name of Wong. he's told to go in to an apartment complex deeper in the zone alone and unarmed for a dealing. we decide "fuck that" and send our solo Gogo to scout the place and she sees it's full of bad guys. we call in some extra people (2 backup characters) and decide to raid the place while making it initially seem like we're following their instructions.Donnie goes in, talks with Wong, nearly flubs the negotiations, my corpo has to go in and save his ass with the blessing of Wong. we pay, get April, leave the building, and raid. during the clearing of the first floor an enforcer bursts out of the bathroom, pants down, cylinder on his cylinder, sword in hand & gets his legs rattled and dies busting, after the first floor is cleared we inspect the body and discover the man had a pocket pussy with the coat of arms for bosnia on the side (blue mountain state reference) and on further inspection we find a dimebag of an unknown white powder in his pocket.our solo, Gogo, was the first to pick it up, and as Donnie and Karfen stroll over to see what it is, she decides to try to smack Donnie with it, he dodges, but Karen (who was right next to him) doesn't. the baggy explodes and Donnie's medscanner or whatever it's called identifies the substance as synthcoke. Karen tries to fistfight Gogo (they had previous bad blood), starts tripping, and hears voices telling her that Gogo is attempting to kill her and steal Donnie away, in the many voices she hears is a former teammate called Fuji who tells her to find some godawful energy drink called thump and drink it for him (long story). she ended up being Sedated by Donnie

I don't know how long ago a Legend of the 5 Rings thread was made. So here one is.The 30 Year Celebration: https://www.licenseglobal.com/entertainment/-legend-of-the-five-rings-celebrates-30-yearsThe Unicorn supplement Children of the Five Winds has been released! They're also working on some new games since apparently the River of Gold boardgame did very well. They're currently working on the Scorpion supplement book. (No news at the moment)Site: https://www.legendofthefiverings.com/ Is anyone in any campaigns? How are the cardgames? I've been running my group for years. They're now closing in on the Hiruma Castle "arc" and potentially the end of the game. They just have to deal with the issue of the Knotted Tail nezumi first. My Doji character also needs to figure out how to get his family's ancestral armor back from said tribe. He doesn't yet realize it's a nemuranai. Thread question: The Unicorn Daimyo's youngest son, Shinjo Shono, returns to Rokugan with his new Quamarist bride, Saadiyah. You and your party are somehow put in charge of the celebration. What do you do? Will you try to ruin it for them? Would you want to properly support them? How would you provide security?
