Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

You will never be a real /osrg/ poster, you have no games, you have no character sheets, ect, ect, so on, so forth.
>>
>>97348969
So do you mind telling us what the situation is with your character sheets and the DM's house rules?

You said that your character sheets aren't full of errors that they're just filled with House rules.
You also said that you are the forever DM but admitted that you have only ever run one session though.

So what DM are those character sheets for, and what house rules specifically are reflected on those sheets?
>>
Shut the fuck up already, trollcow.
>>
>>97348984
Please explain to us the thing with the character sheets.

We pointed out numerous glaring errors, but you have told us that they are just House rules from your DM
But you said that you don't play and never have played as well.

So can you explain to us specifically what those house rules your DM is using on your character sheets?
>>

B4 might be a better bet, you'll spend less time fucking about in the keep.

Yugioh decision making usually comes down to
>Do I do the combo line that instantly loses to Ash Blossom
>Or do I do the combo line that instantly loses to- Oh wait they activated a Charmy this is all pointless and I should just skip my turn
>>
Remember; Modern players fucking loooooooove competitive solitaire. If they didn't you wouldn't have commander and yugioh and all the other current versions of card games and other type of pvp games as well, that have "pretend-interaction".

Ironically enough you can blame the existence of counterspells/negates for modern game design as well.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: What are some systems or you would like to include or see included in a campaign, but haven't been able to? They don't have to be the main focus of the game, having them only as something on the side is okay.

You have fixed exactly nothing. It's really quite impressive how much nothing you've accomplished by changing the font size.
>sane default
A sane default would be building the content in LaTeX, to leverage its ability to take your content and drop it directly into a pre-prepared document formatting template with minimal work. There is a reason scientific journals use it to concatenate papers from multiple different authors.

Why is that?

Despite my many efforts to explain and streamline things, they still think everything is way too complicated.
They think there are too many skills, and that default penalties are too harsh. So I've introduced wildcard skills and taught them to use rules like Time Spent to offset default penalties. But they still don't like it.
They think hit locations are too hard to hit, range penalties are too harsh, and that too many actions take too long in combat. I try to explain how you can offset penalties or do things faster by using combat options like Aim, Evaluate, All-Out Attack, Telegraphic Attack, and Extra Effort, or bump up skill or buy special advantages or techniques to make things easier. Their enemies are also subject to all the same rules, so knowing how to use these options should give them a huge leg up over their foes. But they think all these rules are unnecessary. "I've shot a gun before, [GM]. Anyone should be able to quick-draw a pistol and make a snap shot at a target's neck at 10 meters with 95% accuracy. These rules are stupid." I'm a noguns, so they don't take me seriously when I cite real-life firearm statistics.
Generally, they think too many things give penalties, and don't like adding up penalties. I try to explain that these things which give penalties would just simply be impossible in other systems, and by leveraging modifiers they can make the impossible possible. They say "That's fine. Just don't let me do them then." Which baffles me, because when I was running D&D way back in the day, they were always complaining how they couldn't do anything.
One player also dropped out of the game early while complaining that there was "too much combat." But he said he's also going to be joining my other player's DH2E/Sector-X game even though that game is going to have even more combat. So that also befuddled me. Although, it could've just been scheduling issues that he had to drop out, and the comment was incidental. He didn't say.
>>
As a thought experiment, how would I write up an ability that lets me send my mind back in time? Like reloading a "save point" in video games, but it can go to any point in the past since the time you first acquired the ability. I'm thinking it would probably involve Jumper (Time) with Accessibility or some other limitations. It should be possible to use with conscious effort, but also trigger automatically on death, so Reflexive should also be there.

On a stationary target at the range you get something like +4, I doubt your friends can do that either or they're at least national level competitors

>Why should I homebrew?
/tg/ products are fairly unique in that it's actually pretty simple to make them these days, with a plethora of products to assist in making and playtesting your game. Making your own games helps understand why games are made the way they are, as well as being fun to do.

>What you should post
Ideas for games, games you're currently making, updates to your own games in broad strokes, and any homebrewing for existing products that don't get much attention. Quick question.
In my game, Strength increases your Health Points and Resistance increases your Willpower Points.
Resistance also contains the ability "Toughness", which allows you to decrease damages (therefore, increases your effective number of Health Points in some circumstances) and Strength contains the ability "Endurance", which should allow you to use Willpower more effectively when performing physical tasks.

Here's the problem:
While rolling Toughness to decrease damage is no problem, I recently switched to using WP as a way to change the result of a dice after rolling (the system is a dice pool. Success are always on a 5-6, but if you spend one WP you can count a 3-4 on one die as a success).
I playtested it and it works per-fect-ly
However, because there's no additional roll when using WP, I don't know how to factor in Endurance anymore.

Any idea how I could make Endurance matter again? Don't overthink it, just give me what's on top of your mind.
So far I've considered:
>Spend one WP to reroll, but using Endurance in the second roll. If you get a margin of success, you can get your WP back
It's great, but Endurance would then be useless at lower levels
>After spending one WP for an action and the action is finished, you can roll Endurance to recover it
Makes sense I guess, but it feels weird.

>>
>>97348819
Do something like forbidden lands where you can use your endurance to push rolls.
Pushing rolls means retrying extra hard but if you fail the negative results are much worse.
Mechanically you reroll the check that you pushed.
So if you could use both the 3-4 success range that you get from WP would work synergistically which is what you want thematically from what i can understand
>>
>>97348819
Ok ok, I think I've got it:
>Spending one WP for a physical action allows you to count 3-4 as a success AND roll endurance on top of that. If you get additional successes on your endurance roll, you can use one to either get your WP back or keep them as more successes.
Hmm... shit but it adds an additional roll, when WP are supposed to be spent a lot in combat. Shit
>>
>>97348919
>Do something like forbidden lands where you can use your endurance to push rolls.
>Pushing rolls means retrying extra hard but if you fail the negative results are much worse.
I really like the sound of that, but I'm not too sure I understand your last sentence, although yeah you got the synergy right.
It's just that part
>So if you could use both the 3-4 success range that you get from WP would work synergistically
which is don't get
>>
>>97348819
>but if you spend one WP you can count a 3-4 on one die as a success
you could make that spending WP lowers the "success range" for each point spent
so, if you spend 1 WP dice with results 4+ would succeed, is you spend 2 WP they would succeed with 3+, and so on

What book exists for CofD that would fit best for Ashley? Is there something like Infernalist books and if so how good is it?
>Ashley “Leyley” Graves
>Age: early 20s (young adult)
>Build: very thin, slight/waifish frame, 5'3"–5'6" range; moves with quick, jittery energy or languid entitlement depending on mood.
>Skin: very pale, almost translucent; faint blue veins visible on forearms in bright light.
Background

Grew up as the younger sibling of Andrew Graves. Parents designated Andrew as primary caregiver; Ashley was emotionally spoiled yet materially neglected. She learned to manipulate for attention.
Early memory: Andrew spending his allowance to buy her lemon muffins for a birthday — formative attachment memory.
Social history: few friends (Nina, Julia) who were more interested in Andrew; jealousy led Ashley to orchestrate cruel punishments and, eventually, murder. No meaningful peer bonds; antisocial and isolated.
Recent crisis origin (campaign start): quarantined in apartment building due to a supposed parasite in the water. Food deliveries stop; long deprivation and cabin fever. As supplies dwindle she and Andrew resort to transgressive survival choices (scavenging, later cannibalism). The quarantine and scarcity intensify her dependency on Andrew and destabilize moral limits.

Maybe he's a fan of the aquatic ape hypothesis and believes that human intelligence is a product of great ape adaption to more aquatic habitats, so he's dabbling in Time magic to try and create a hyperbolic time chamber in which he can force thousands of generations of humans to adapt to even more alien environments, until they develop even greater intelligence than baseline humanity.

The science is sound.

It is probably not too controversial to say that the art of modern rulebooks is made with female representation in mind.

These women are predominantly filling important roles, such as archmages, military officers, or nobles.
But how come there is barely any art that shows them in peril, or at a clear disadvantage? Regardless of their status.

There is no shortage of men in peril.
Neither in classic nor in modern art.

I mean that's just false. The men who draw things like OP are drawing a power fantasy in which being super-male means you "deserve" attractive women. Your version of the power fantasy plays out in romance novels--not Frazetta's art.

Don't double fianchetto. Knights are good blockers of isolated pawns. Castle in the opposite direction for a more dynamic game. Keep bishops when the position is open, knights when it's closed. A halo of flies orbited her skull, like a constant droning crown. She raised one swollen hand and beckoned you forward.

Your stomach lurched. The air was thick with it; the vast, massive sweet-rank altars of rot looming behind her, cathedrals of corruption that pressed into the lungs and clawed at the eyes. Your nose burned, then ran freely, tears following in helpless sympathy.

From her own nostrils, viscous strands of snot slid downward. They did not splatter. They did not smear. Instead, they fell with deliberate grace, congealing upon her breast into three perfect rings, interlocked and whole.

She writhed in rapt, fetid ecstasy, and she smiled at you, slow and knowing. She could see the response she had drawn from you by glancing at the tinting of your pants. She leaned closer, breath hot and sour, and pressed her blackened tongue to your lips.

You did not pull away.

You took it into your mouth and tasted her. Pain flared at once; her saliva burned, raising blisters along the soft skin inside your cheeks, but you swallowed the sensation down, welcomed it, let it mark you.

i didn't even notice! oh well, maybe its a mutation or something lol

We're going to have to come up with a phrase for the new era of Warhammer 40,000 ushered in by the Amazon TV show, DoW 4 and Total War 40k, and increased market value of Games Workshop.

nu40k isn't going to cover it. nu40k is already bad enough for many of us from headier days like 1st through 4th edition. You are going to see horrific debasements to the thing you know and love that you will still see with your eyes closed. Every 80 IQ person with internet access will have an opinion on Warhammer without knowing what a Tau Remora Drone is.

Fallout 1 is not that good. Fallout 2 fixes some things but wasnt built upon.

>Fallout 1 is not that good
Fallout 1 is a very lean and tightly focussed package which manages to do everything it sets out to do well

>After the lack of any sustained interest generated by Space Marine 2
Don't know about here, but in more normie oriented hobby spaces (in my local wargaming and RPG groups as well as on normie social media like facebook) I've definitely seen a significant influx of noobs who are interested in 40k, but don't really know or understand much about it other than SM2 or (even worse) some shitty youtube videos/reels which appeared due to it

You forgot the prime suspect of Space Marine 2
Where I work I don’t need to do much so I usually end up cracking open an old codex or one of the Heresy Libers to read through to pass the time and I’ve had more interactions with newfags than I can count who call themselves “massively autistic warhammer fans” but couldn’t tell you what the fuck a Tactical Squad is because all they know is primarislop
