What went wrong?
Your favorite zoomie made a video, right?
>>12026082Being a medium sized mostly PC-only game publisher on the brink of the century was a bad time. The PC game market was overstretched and games which did not become major hits were flopping left and right. You remember the Fallout games, but Interplay had dozens of other games back then which left zero cultural (or financial) impact.
>>12026329its thisif they couldve held on for a few more yrs, it wouldve turned aroundbut very early 00s was the point in time when consoles were actually comparable to mid-range PCs in terms of power, but were MUCH cheaper. i remember thats around the time when most game stores just totally stopped carrying PC games entirely. i think one of the last PC games i ever bought in store was actually halo. and its kinda ironic since thats pretty much the game that caused it.its funny to think that it was almost a mini-dark-age for PC. certainly not in terms of software, plenty of classic PC games from 00-06 or so. but actually fucking buying them became almost impossible. that is until steam (((saved))) the industry read: monopolized the entire PC games market. thankfully piracy was also becoming much easier/faster at that timefuck gaben
>>12026082They made bad games that sold poorly
>>12026082Didn't take the console business seriously enough. They should've at least ported Fallout to PS1. PC vegans didn't buy games.

My dad did not pass away. This is his favorite game, though. Thoughts?
>>12025383As a 7-year old, it was my favourite game ever, but I never completed it.
>>12025404Basically same story with me, desu. I've been meaning to play it as an adult to see just what about it stopped me from finishing it (besides my disc needed to be rebuffed). It got pretty mediocre scores so I think it may have just been a shitty game. Great opening video, though. FMV clips on the PS1 were always a delight:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U27tnx3Gvb0

Wizardry sucks dick because it's not enough to employ a winning strategy. You have to get good rng to win. Japs love having their time wasted like this. I've never understood it. Maybe their brains enjoy rote tasks over and over while convincing themselves it was time well spent overcoming a "challenge"

This console was a technical piece of shit for the time it came out in. It barely matched the Mega Drive or PC Engine, both of which were much older. They really had no excuse for making such a weak machine so late. It should have absolutely mogged the MD and PCE but a lot of the times it was the other way around.
Bump because this should be common knowledge. The words "SNES" should be equated to "shitty, slow, bottlenecked hardware" and "lacklustre games library" in the public's mind. There should be a sticky on this forum stating simply stating:>SNES>2.68 mhz>in 1991Just as a continuous reminder of how embarrassingly poor this console was.>>12023902>Go bust out DKC and tell me it wasn't groundbreaking for it's time.Everything Donkey Kong did was done in far better fashion and earlier by David Perry games such as Aladdin (Mega Drive version) or Earthworm Jim. The only people impressed by Donkey Kong were those who were so deep in the Nintendo echo chamber that they had never seen those games.>>12025095>There's a difference between preferring another console, and claiming the Super Nintendo is bad. There is, but it's quite natural to prefer another console when the SNES is bad on an objective level.>universally acclaimed consoleFor what? Mario, Zelda, Metroid. Same shit as any other Nintendo console. Nobody actually gives a shit about the SNES itself, or any of it's other games, they just like the same couple Nintendo games that they would like irregardless of what console it was on. Mega Drive and PC Engine enjoys threads with people sharing and enjoying dozens of incredible titles. Meanwhile, you SNES drones have trouble naming more than 5 without resorting to shit-tier filler and hoping nobody notices.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

>>12026490You convinced me. I will now stop liking all these Capcom, Konami, Natsume, Irem, Taito, etc games because you reminded me that the SNES has an on paper spec number set that's low!In fact, screw retro, all retro consoles are too low on on-paper specs, I will now exclusively play on the most modern, latest CPU available on the market. And I will accept no game that doesn't require those specs!

>>12026031Oh, i've seen plenty of those on both Saturn and PSX, mostly PSX since there is a dedicated Saturn patching tool. But I remember the ZSNES days where I had to run several dos programs in a row to patch a game.
>>12026002>needing a translation for a SHMUPYes. If there is but one line of dialog, it should be in my language. There is not a single Japan only game that shouldn't be translated.
>>12026051Apparently the patching tool for Ys IV English translation on PC Engine CD no longer works on 64-bit Windows machines. You have to use a VM or an emulator to patch the game.
>>12025957They also used a Thunder Force IV track as BGM for the last boss's dialogue instead of, you know, fucking using the actual song released without voices in the damn soundtrack album. I wish someone competent did a proper English patch for this game.

>>12026591Well the series was as just SaGa on Game Boy>Makai Toushi SaGa>SaGa 2: Hihou Densetsu>SaGa 3: Jikuu no HashaSo I guess when it came to Super Nintendo they wanted it to have a new name. And since the SNES games are more romantic fantasy without robots and mutants, maybe that's why they chose "Romancing">actually looks it upHere's the real answer:>The game's "Romancing" title was suggested by Nobuyuki Inoue, inspired by the adventure movie Romancing the Stone. Kawazu was a little mixed on the impression given by the title, but the illustrations and music helped make the game more in line with the "romantic" style implied by the title.[15]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romancing_SaGa#Development

>>12025903Master System, Game Gear and Mega Drive are all superb consoles with fun libraries to go back to. SEGA's 1st party IPs, mainly in the arcades, but also on home consoles, has mostly been great, especially titles like Sonic and Streets of Rage. I also loved their licensed titles, like when they made Disney ones. I can't imagine someone thinking SEGA made nothing of value unironically.

Not my problem.
>>12026659No, your problem is air quality. I suggest some kind of purifier with a HEPA filter.
>>12026720Upon what do you base this claim?
For you, is it worth it to start from the first game in every franchise? I have the urge to do that, but I feel that sometimes it ends up with me not playing what I actually want, and as a consequence, I play less games. I know that doing it enhances the experience later when playing the "best" entries, but it sometimes is such a drag to even think about playing 5+ whole games before getting to what you are actually interested in
We must promote and adhere to maximalism. Everything you are interested in must be started from the beginning and the beginning only, and only an order of release must be followed. This is the only way you can follow the continuing story.
>>12024993non linear storytelling exists
>>12026375Not disproving my point, you read what is produced first.
>>12024782I played FF1 at least 3 times, maybe more, and only realized that NPCs only ever said one box worth of text max last year when a friend mentionned it in passing. It never felt to me like something was missing. On the contrary I hate when 5th or 6th gen RPGs have WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS just to say nothing. Just because they could. What I'm getting at is the opposite issue is worse.

Now that the dust has settled and my dad has died, we can speak of the elephant in the room.Doki Doki Panic - should it have been a Mario game or not? For those of you who aren't aware, the Super Mario Bros. 2 we got was not the same as the original Japanese game, but a reskin of a game called Doki Doki Panic.Personally, I think it's a great game.
>>12026709It was a different era. They made the right choice for the time.Seriously though I've always loved it. Surprised there aren't more SMB2 clones with picking up and throwing things.
>>12026709The Mario version is better since I don't want to play as a bunch of towelheads.
The Mario version is better in general, they polished it a tonhttps://tcrf.net/Super_Mario_Bros._2_(NES)/Changes_from_Yume_Koujou:_Doki_Doki_PanicAdding running is a big change.
>>12026717You go
>>12026709If I'm not mistaken the sort of vertical platforming concept behind it was originally pitched as a Mario game but got rejected. So it ended up materializing as a game wholly alien to what it would've been if they got the go-ahead to develop it as a Mario game. Tendies mald when you point it out but the Mario reskin feels out of place in the original trilogy. It goes from basic Super Mario Bros mechanics then weird unrelated world & gameplay that takes place in a dream and then a return to the core gameplay of first game. It's just nonsense. I think the reskin would have more legitimacy if they went beyond a few cosmetic enhancements and tailored it to the Mario Bros series a little more. But its just a crude reskin at the end of the day. And I think the arab themes of the game are more befitting of the original arab cast. So I prefer the original version.
So it was all a dream then.
