What did Japanese arcades smell like in the 90s?

It literally would smell like coins tho

Mine had a bit of that new car smell so they probably wet and dry cleaned the carpet often. Also that warm motherboard and wire smell from the plastic insulation of the wires.

Were there any large faction of people in gaming who did not like the transition into 64 bit 3D games in the mid 90s, or was that considered mental illness?
>imagining all this 3D slop coming out and ruining the entire medium
It's somewhat plausible.

Before I finished reading your post I was going to ask if they were Christians and then you confirmed it. That flavour of douchery is sadly all too familiar.
>>

My older siblings grew up with an NES and genesis and stopped playing videogames long before we had any 3D consoles at home.
Later I've heard them talk about 3D games like "They're too confusing. You can go anywhere and I don't know what to do."
>>
I think enthusiasts all too often project such quandries onto others. People by and large just accept what's available without a second thought about how shit compares to the past, other media, different regions, etc. 3D was a spectacle to the average consumer, and helped differentiate it from the previous generation. Development moved to new platforms. Unless you had parents who made you sell off your current console to fund a new one (as some I knew did), it's not as if you suddenly lost access to those games. You had too many new games coming out to lament about the past, and consider what may have been lost in the transition. There's a parallel to this in the console war debate. There would be arguments about what console was better and some tribal pride, but for the most part, you just wanted to play everything. You'd play fighters with whoever had a PSX, splitscreen FPS with N64 owners. Someyimes we'd even coordinate what games we got to make sure we had a wider variety to choose from. A lot of the discourse I see on /vr/ was never relevant then or even now.
>>
>>12482559
i dont really remember anyone saying they disliked 3D when it was new. it was such a big leap that everyone seemed pretty excited for it.
>>
>>12482559
Not exactly but I went from 8 bit to pc so played early 3D games like Doom and simply polygon and early textured games and then later discovered 16 bit games after I had an N64 so I didn't have the impression that some other people had that 16 bit games were outdated and primitive. I liked 3D games but I would also be really excited if I saw one of the few 2D games for the ps1. When I saw Doom on snes in a rental place I just assumed that technically Doom was on the level of 16 bit games. When I saw Yoshi Story on N64 the graphics absolutely blew me away and this was after playing the early N64 3D games. And back then before I knew anything I considered Wolfenstein 3D to have graphics equivalent to an Nes or Master System game.

One moment was playing DK64 and thinking how much worse the graphics were.

>>12482580
I used to be disgusted with an non textured 3D from before 1994 or so if I happened to find a demo on pc. At the time I believed that the typical 16 bit game was so much more advanced.

Reused assets aside, I feel they are harder than the PS1 games.

The new powerups sound great on paper but in practice are kinda terrible for a handheld
The rocket jump and super slide would've been much better suited to a fifth console platformer where you have a much larger field of vision

also, as you mentioned, being limited to 2 shoulder buttons for mapping instead of 4

This, also the 1st title has a serious problem with jumps and slidejumps off the edge of platforms just not working... otherwise they're both excellent titles.

The Japanese versions of games are the main version. The localizations (NA or EU versions) are just derivative versions.
>but anon, games were IMPROVED for their western release!
No, they often had the difficulty lowered because western gamers are babies. Like Mega Man 2, which was made easier but you guys still claim it's hard. And some games did the opposite and increased the difficulty because of the rental market. The only way to get the true intended experience is to play the original.
>But the western versions fixed bugs!
They also introduced tons of them. Translating games back then was basically hacking them because text characters were graphical elements and not actual text, so translations often introduced bugs that weren't in the originals.

They also censored the living shit out of everything. Graphics, dialogue, everything. And if we're talking about NES games, they have worse audio too because of missing sound hardware. Yeah that's right, if you played Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid, Kid Icarus, etc, than you got the shitty version with gimped music.
>but [developer] said they like the English version better and they used the English script to make changes in the original
No they didn't
>ywnbj

Arcade design is represented and cherished in modern times, but it happens devoid of literacy and experience in where that comes from.
You will see people coming up with all kinds of things, like nuzlocke runs, finding all kinds of ways to arbitrarily turn games into more skill-based experiences.
All of that has its roots in arcade design and never really lost relevancy, but the moment you look at Rail Shooters, Nintendo had all the levity.
Nintendo makes a really damn good railshooter that kicks the living shit out of either Panzer Dragoons, in terms of scoring,
but the large majority of Nintendo fans, who started playing SF64 weren't and still aren't interested in its core design. It's why I call it astroturf.
Zero never had a chance, neither does Star Fox as a whole. Shmups are back, the deadest of genres, and yet it's healthier than a Nintendo franchise.
You could make the best F-Zero/Star Fox/Wave Race game ever, made in its predecessor's image. It would never be enough.
Gamers don't have the kind of relationship with replay value that 90's Nintendo/AV made games in mind with.
A lot needs to happen culturally to inspire people towards familiarizing themselves with,
and even crave an experience rooted in, that context. (arcade design)
"I want cheaper, shorter games, with worse graphics, more sustainable development and I'm not kidding."
You can't do any of that when the majority of people come from that era of Nintendo fans,
who were happy to see Star Fox turn into a Ubisoft Toys-To-Life AssCreed Tower game,
or think the only way to save the series is "do what XYZ 3rd Party entry did but betterer and biggerer this time!".
You gotta re-introduce missing context in design philosophy and appeal to the average Switch owner.

World Class Leaderboard was one of two games that I had on whatever outdated computer my family had in the guest bedroom back in the early-ish 90s. I vaguely remember being amused by how typing "OR" when it says "SELECT NUMBER OF PLAYERS 1 2 3 OR 4" brought up a driving range or something, I forget. It was probably just O or R which did it.

I've always thought it was a waste that none of the Strike Witches games were Space Harrier clones

There was going to be a Robocop parody about fighting AIDS to go along with all those other weird health PSA games on Super Nintendo like Captain Novalin and Bronkie the Bronchiasaurus but it was cancelled and no ROM has ever surfaced.

I was actually surprised that Dreamcast Magazine only gave it 86% when I was expecting it to be like 98% or something absurd.
The forklift section can run a bit long, but I actually liked it. It mirrors Ryo's adventure, having to start work and balancing his time between working and trying to progress his investigation. Making work-friends and slowly unravelling more of the plot. Shenmue is a game that you have to be in a certain mindset to play. Once you sort of 'let go' of the rush, you can enjoy a lot of the mundane stuff.
I actually loved and still love the game as one of my favourites. It still does a lot of things so much better than any modern 'story based' game, and it just feels like it was made with a lot more care overall. The details, music, graphics are all so memorable for me.
Shenmue III was bad because it took too much from modern games and not enough from Shenmue I and II in my opinion.
