READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

>>
>>107568632
You could use a /8 for your home network if you want. It would not hurt anything other than remembering where shit was. You won't get broadcast spam, you won't get crippling lag, or any other problems. You just won't have any segregation since it's just one big pot. The only reason we subnet on local networks is to have control over what talks to what. This is basic networking. We are not using token ring anymore.

1. Lockdown mode enabled
2. File vault enabled
3. Firewall enabled
4. Sip enabled
5. Seperate peofiles for work, casual browsing and admin
6. Malwarebytes with full disk access across all profiles
7. Keypassxc password manager
8. Brave browser with https everywhere, amnesiac browzer
9. Mullvad vpn
10. Totp for apple account
11. External keyboard with open source firmware etc (pic related)
12. Regularly shut down and restart laptop
13. Run a.i locally
14. Disabled fingerprint, only type password in under a blanket just for admin profile.

I’m not convinced malwarebyres is a win
What’s sip?
Safari with 1Blocker likely beats Brave
What’s your threat model? Whom are you afraid of? How much money and time are they willing to put into hacking your laptop?

Its kind of funny to rewatch movies from a few decades ago, like the Matrix, where being a cubicle office worker is supposedly hell, sucks arse or whatever and think of how many people now would absolutely love having that work

That is also back then when majority of the workers were semi truck drivers, oil, construction and manufacturing. A dream job for many people. Shitty micromangers shown in office space are the norm not the exception.

anyone else do DIY stuff as like a way to do programming but without having to touch computers?

i like it but i've realized i really instinctively feel unnerved by working on physical things. programming is still probably more my speed because i can do stupid shit and then start over from scratch without losing anything. with DIY stuff it's less so, like i make 1 tiny mistake and i end up fucking up the whole thing permanently. i had to give up woodworking because it honestly just broke my heart to lose something i really liked. now i mostly just work with prefab style stuff so i can buy replacements. it still sucks but at least i can take a deep breath and think like "ok i can fix this with money" and rationalize it as an expensive lesson

>Does it in C++ with zero critical bugs
Stop lying. The first versions of the Bitcoin core were so fucking cluttered with bugs that it's almost a miracle it didn't had any major problem. Maybe because it was just a hobbyist thing.
>Invents a new model for trust
It wasn't him. Smart contracts were already a thing before Bitcoin.
>Invents contracts requiring minimal trust
Again, already existed.
>Software includes a working p2p layer, marketplace, and programmable transaction system
Debatable.
>scales to worth over a trillion dollars
It wasn't him. The CIA niggers did most of the work with some OSS volunteers.
>stays anonymous the whole time
It's literally Hal Finney. Are you retarded?
>never spends a dollar of their founder money
You don't know because we don't know all of his wallets, just some that were used in the initial mining that were literally signed by him.

Ridiculous thing to say. He has been leading the biggest software collaborative project in the world since its beginning 25 years ago. if that is not special then nothing is.
>>
>>107568284
>Full of bugs

There were zero critical bugs.

>It wasn't him. Smart contracts were already a thing before Bitcoin.

Yeah, I know what you're alluding to and you're wrong there, too. You probably think because you know about Nick Szabo that you can make such a claim, but nothing that he wrote is remotely compatible with the contracts that came to be created with ledgers. So your claim is just contrarian and retarded. Besides, the term "smart contract" today is used to apply to any program that runs on a ledger, whether or not it does anything interesting or not

>>Software includes a working p2p layer, marketplace, and programmable transaction system

Bitcoin included all of this in the first release.

Go ahead and cite those references now, neckbeard.

Newbie here. Used i3 for a bit, can't live without it now. But using no DE requires me to look up wikis for hours just to change some config all the time. Is there a control panel or settings manager with a GUI or TUI? I'm looking for something like nmtui but for all settings like fonts, display, inputs. Or should I just use a DE and change the window manager to i3?
>>

if you've made local changes (i.e. modified the files in that repo) then you gotta backup those files, then
$ git checkout current-branch && git pull
and apply the difference between your local files and the newly pulled files manually
if you haven't, then the branch probably got restructured, in that case
$ git fetch && git branch -m current-branch old-branch && git branch current-branch origin/master && git checkout current-branch && git branch -d old-branch && git merge FETCH_HEAD && git checkout .

`git pull' is short for
$ git fetch && git merge
