can you replace a cmos battery with a capacitor and why didn't they do this in the first place
24 replies and 4 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>107790525
these days the sram behaviour is emulated and you don't actually need the battery to keep bios settings, it's only needed for the clock
>>
>>107790583
extremely old then
my 386 had a cr2032
>>
>>107790603
a-hah. interesting
i thought these solutions are still more expensive than using a battery
>>
>>107790176
Basically, it is very hard to get a capacitor to retain a significant ammount of charge for a long time in real conditions without it leaking away.
Also, iirc the way charge scales with the geometry of the capacitor results on them needing to be bigger than a battery storing an equivalent ammount of energy.
Also, capacitors have a shorter lifespan than batteries, or at least used to do so in the past, and replacing them will require resoldering.

Is it normal that qbittorrent reaches about 120mb/s on my desktop, 50mb/s on my nas (same network as the desktio, 2gbps) and over 200mb/s on my seedbox? On Windows it writes to an ssd, on the nas on a mergerfs filesystem with 4x16tb seagate exos, on the seedbox not sure, I think it should be hdd too
>>
>>107790658
No, because that'll have a new partition record and a new filesystem. You'd have to go looking for stuff with something like photorec which specifically searches for lost data. Normal programs don't like to read uninitialized memory.

>>107790744
that's just the price they charge you now not the actual cost. Once companies are reliant on AI the pricing will be jacked up, but until they make it more efficient they'll still be losing money

ok, that goes completely against the trend of things getting cheaper over time, but sure, maybe that will buck the trend of human development

why should people stop paying for the cheaper option now because you predict it will get more expensive?

hatespeech and discrimination laws only apply in a public situation

That’s exactly what he’s saying. LLM’s do not “think” or “reason” in the sense that we understand the terms. If they can be said to “know” anything it’s the next most likely token to follow what it’s been given. Whether that token corresponds to something humans regard as sensical or correct is not a concept the LLM is equipped to know or care about
>>
>>107782443
It's not a philosopher. It isn't concerned with certainty, and you can't make it be. It will only spit out text that attempts to make it appear as if it is concerned about certainty. It has to perform a complete analysis of something to arrive at any notion of HOW certain it is. It doesn't do complete analyses of things. It can't. It can't even pull out non-deprecated features of software on github reliably. It looks things up and still provides wrong answers about the thing it supposedly just looked into that no person could fuck up. How can it even start to determine how certain it is or should be? That's too deep and philosophical for an llm.
>>
>>107781387
How often have people written "I don't know" for a given text online? Almost none, since writing about something they don't know doesn't make any sense. LLM's extrapolate on what's written, and "I don't know" is rarely written as opposed to something.

c++ templates are zero overhead and generated at compile time. there is nothing you could do to improve them while keeping their advantages. their main downside is you have to recompile the function/class/etc every time a new overload is used. this means you cannot link against precompiled templates. your naming convention could not in the slightest imply anything more than a naming convention because it doesn't address the core issue with them. you have clearly never written code that uses templates if this is the best thing you could come up with.

>c++ templates are zero overhead and generated at compile time
I can only think of Java and Go as examples of AOT compiled languages where generics impose a runtime cost. C++ isn't unique in the slightest.
>there is nothing you could do to improve them while keeping their advantages
There are lots of things you can do to improve them like fixing inference, doing away with the shitty qualifier mechanics, having deeper integration with the language, a better compilation procedure, etc.

Anon, every time you post you make it clear to me that you really don't understand this level of language design. The focus on syntax and surface level details, they have nothing to do with what I'm talking about.
template<class T>
T add(T a, T b);
auto x = add(1, 1);
auto y = add(1.0f, 1.0f);

How does the compiler deduce the types of a and b for x and y? How does it deduce the types for x and y?

I need help understanding how to run exe utilities in wine. As I understand, anything command line is run through winecmd rather than doing Windows cmd stuff, so it throws an unknown command error for a ton of stuff, breaking most scripts and... executable arguments. I've tried running .bat files with "foo.exe arg1 arg2" to no success, same goes for adding the .exe in Lutris and configuring arguments there. I seem to lately be mostly interested in games that need tinkering to work right even in Windows and that shit cascading into linux is proving to be a real pain in the ass.
>>
>>107790828
Wait, does wine really not support the feature set of... cmd? In a way that breaks real scripts? That's surprising, I would figure that DOS-era shit is long mastered by now. Or is it just missing various .exes that it expects to be in the path?
>>
>>107790870
That's my understanding, yeah. It's only a very limited set that has been implemented. Not even conditionals and whatnot. I guess the expectation is that people would write bash scripts, which is real fuckin' antiquated with how much wine is being used for now and those things relying on windows native support communities.
>>
>>107790926
That's really weird. cmd is obtuse but it seems like it'd be really simple to implement compared to everything in win32 and it's entirely feature frozen afaik. I could see someone slightly more autistic than I am doing it for fun. There's probably an open source implementation somewhere for freedos or something too.
I mean I know there isn't that many batch scripts these days but come on, any project that can implement d3d12 well enough to run ue5slop should be able to re-implement cmd.exe in its sleep.
