>Not sure what private trackers are all about?
A private tracker is an invite-only torrent website. Each member shares common goals: collecting, preserving and discussing media.

I impulse bought one several years ago but I never found a use case for it. For portability a laptop is better; cheaper, more powerful and doesn't require microHDMI adapters to see things on a screen. For GPIO pins applications it's larger and more expensive than a typical raspberry pi and the keyboard is useless, unless you also have a monitor handy, even if you did, it's simpler to just control it via SSH.
Maybe there's some use case as a purposefully limited main computer for kids so they don't waste time in javascript heavy social media pages while also giving them the platform to play with GPIO pin things, but I'm at least 7 years away from having children. Also nothing stopped me as a kid to waste time on movies and on CLI versions of social media on the very first Raspberry Pi model.

The mini pc market has way too much competition . Apple now has affordable options, and the gibberish Chinese brands even seem to be making inroads.

Why not try a novelty form factor that appeals to idiots?
If they can restrain their greed and price it appropriately, they'll sell millions of 'em.

Useful archiving efforts and other projects to help out with for people new to and interested in archiving:

HIGH priority (If you don't help archive these automatically, the data will probably be lost forever):

1. http://warrior.archiveteam.org/
Help out automatically archive things being shut down right now by running ArchiveTeam Warrior program (or specific containers) in the background
Requirements: Few GB of space, some bandwidth and small amount of CPU power, more info: https://wiki.archiveteam.org/index.php/ArchiveTeam_Warrior

If you learn that a site or any online data is in danger of shutting down, read through this page and contact ArchiveTeam on their IRC if required in order to have it archived: https://wiki.archiveteam.org/index.php/Projects

2. Help out automatically forward URLs you browse that are not archived on https://archive.org to them for archival with a browser extension
https://github.com/internetarchive/wayback-machine-webextension
>>
MEDIUM priority (Important overall)

3. Seed torrents for as long as possible, rare data forever. Make sure to look up a guide for your router to PORT FORWARD your torrent client port, to substantially increase your upload (and your download) speed. In low population torrent swarms, if no one is port forwarded then you might not be able to connect to each other at all and exchange any data despite having it.
Requirements: As much or as little bandwitdh you want (you can set the limits if you need to)
https://github.com/qbittorrent/qBittorrent (Recommended client, especially to replace uTorrent)

4. Archive web pages you want to have a local copy of with a "Web Extension for saving a faithful copy of a complete web page in a single HTML file with a single click"
https://github.com/gildas-lormeau/SingleFile

5. Archive videos with "GUI front-end for youtube-dl, yt-dlp and other compatible video downloaders"
https://github.com/axcore/tartube

6. "Capture or record any area of your screen and share it with a single press of a key"
https://github.com/ShareX/ShareX

Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>
8. Publish the data that you have archived that isn't easily or at all available online. You can easily create torrents yourself in your torrent client and then share the magnet link to it anywhere online for anyone to access and, as long as DHT (Distributed Hash Table, decentralized way to share torrents without the need for any specific tracker) is enabled in settings (on by default), your files will be searchable on DHT by DHT crawlers, local or online (for example https://btdig.com/, where you can actually also search for FILE NAMES within all DHT torrents)
(archive.org also creates torrents for all uploads automatically but their torrents shouldn't be relied on because of an error-prone implementation and since they can also break when more files are uploaded or if the item's metadata changes, which includes even getting a new comment on the item)

OTHER useful things:

- In your torrent client settings add the best trackers to be automatically added for all of your newly added torrents (helps more easily connect to peers, especially in obscure torrents)
https://github.com/ngosang/trackerslist

- Look into running a node for I2P (anonymous private network within the global internet)
Requirements: Mostly bandwidth, more info: https://geti2p.net/en/faq
https://geti2p.net/

- Look into running Tor/Hyphanet(Freenet)/IPFS/YaCy/SearXNG nodes

It's deliberated (some really small portions of the web are searchable, like if memory serves me you can search Pastebin and some government sites, but that's it).

If people could easily find information there, there would be a lot of takedown notices, especially thanks to those EU cuck countries with "right to be forgotten" and GDP laws. If you can't search, the information is preserved.

I call preservation "preservation by obscurity".
>>
Hell, you can literally find child porn on the wayback machine from the early 2000s (it was some geocities site that got saved). Essentially, making the site easy to search, with withe implementation of things like full text search, reverse image search, etc... would considerably expand the problems, lawsuits, and information being removed there.

Archive.org is slow enough as is, leaving aside the headaches a full searches engine would bring it’d substantially increase maintenance costs and attack surface. Its search space would be significantly larger than Googles, because it’s searching the history of the web.

>>107813429
having done the calculations myself for the renewable energy grid in Europe I know the numbers are a big fucking lie. You have to adjust for backup storage if you do that nuclear, coal and gas are all below 5ct Solar and Wind go up to 12 if not more for electricity (heating was not included back then). The problem is the massive fluctuations and the necessary real time grid balancing that needs massive backup storage. Hell the prof who pushed this shit even back then (2016) was quite clear any attempt to get hydrogen going before 2050 is a scam and one should be skeptical since those people would be hired to sabotage renewables. Also nuclear can be made cheaper there is no reason for the complex storage of nuclear waste material if it could be recycled instead but hey what do I know?

i noticed, today, that there are currently 363 x86 syscalls listed in musl libc: https://git.musl-libc.org/cgit/musl/tree/arch/x86_64/bits/syscall.h.in

i thought that this would make for a really good "syscall of the day" discussion (nevermind the fact that it's already the 9th)
for today, in order to catch us up, as well as maybe foster a bit more discussion and interest, we'll actually start with 7 syscalls. these are:
#define __NR_read                 0
#define __NR_write 1
#define __NR_open 2
#define __NR_close 3
#define __NR_stat 4
#define __NR_fstat 5
#define __NR_lstat 6

luckily for us, these are all pretty similar, so it really works out quite nicely. these are your classic, day one syscalls that pretty much every programmer ought to know about, even if they don't care to delve too deeply into the internals of the system.

ITT, feel free to discuss these syscalls, syscalls in general, file io, and other related topics

the everything is a file abstraction kinda sucks. file reads need a buffer over the block device, streams need a buffer on libc (and duplicated on the kernel for some reason.) block devices exposed as files is even more dumb when it attempts to hack on an abstraction that's just woefully underpowered.
the real abstraction is to be found at the common denominator between all of the implementations they hide. everything is a linear slice of memory.
>>
>>107814852
>and duplicated on the kernel for some reason
