I honestly didn't have any issues using Win8.1 but I only used it for like a year or so and then Win10 came out and I just did the free upgrade.
It honestly didn't feel that much different from 7 since it didn't install the BS tablet like UI environment. But still that early adoption of Win8 fucked up everyone's expectation of what MS wanted to take Windows to and I do not fault people for bashing Win8/8.1.
>>

Lol
Lmao, even
If ms cared the least you wouldn't even be discussing it because you simply and absolutely wouldn't be able to do it, same as with "pirated" apps...
Truth is not only they're fully aware of the extent of such "theft", they embrace, as it gives them the market share (therefore the value) they would nowhere have without it.
Tl; dr: you're a moron (and a sucker).

Just because people fuck with shit doesn't mean it needed to be fucked with
I have probably the most ridiculous thing you'd call a "NAS" but I otherwise have full confidence that if I stopped doing anything, it would run indefinity and only stopped because of hardware failure.

There is otherwise no magic pixie dust in Synologys and IDK where people get the idea that if you build something you are guaranteed a problem and something prebuilt is immune from everything.

Linux users be like:
>I spent 5000 hours so that I could browse the web, listen to music, and work on code
WHY?
By the time you spend 5000 hours to do all this crap, which always ends up in the most generic setup:
>blank desktop with a launcher
You could have literally just turned on a Mac or a Windows PC and been working.
I'd really like a serious answer here because it seems to be totally fucking worthless to jump through all these hoops to get Linux running when windows does the exact same fucking tasks with no effort at all.
>>106760012

you act like this is a daily chore. i haven't even changes my wallpaper since 2012. i've been using the same wm/tray/themes so long that the wm i'm using hasn't had a release since 2015.
imagine if you set up windows 7 just how you liked it and just haven't touched it since (i realise one or two people will post their win7 desktops, but they know they're on a sinking ship. my linux system on the other hand is fully up to date and runs all current software). that's what my linux system is like. you aren't forced to keep messing with it, or reinstall it regularly.
you're only overwhelmed by it because you already know windows. you already know the software you currently use and already know/have configured it to your liking. you've already spent that time on windows.

Why hasn't he released a version of SteamOS that runs on generic desktop PCs yet? He has the perfect opportunity right now to kill Windows once and for all, now that Microsoft is forcing people off Windows 10 and everyone is desperately looking for an alternative. SteamOS is the only Linux distro polished enough and easy enough to install that the average normie gamer can do it. He's missing a golden opportunity.

Welcome to the 4Chan /g usenet group Thread!

>What is /usenet/?

Open standard protocols still exist and are what the internet was built on
(http, irc, rss, ftp, etc). TNot owned by corpos, not under
govt control, and are accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
They simply exist to be built upon and enjoyed
by all.

Some, like FTP are outdated and insecure. Others, like rss, irc, http,
usenet are still glorious and wonderful open standards .
Join us and discuss such topics on one such protocol:
NNTP, aka usenet.

I've been using IRC for a while but I'm still a little retarded, so if I am having a hard time with Usenet, other people probably are too. I have heard about Usenet forever, including via IRC channels, but nobody ever really explained it like OP (thank you), though the instructions still remain a bit too obtuse. Being able to ask real questions to real people in real time is what helped me figure out IRC at first.

Seconding this.

Programming is no longer a lucrative career. Salaries keep decreasing every year and some languages now pay less than the average wage for all jobs in America. Garbagemen are making more money than programmers now.

Salaries are decreasing because they're replacing talented programmers with low skill jeets. It's inevitably all going to come crashing down. Hopefully soon, because the people who could rebuild it are reaching retirement age.

source only refers to code and CAD files are indistinguishable from their paper equivalents and thus are not meaningfully code on their own any more than anything else that can be saved electronically but is not considered to be code (or "source")

You've clearly never made anything of consequence or you would know better. PCB routing from CAD schematics is non-trivial for large digital circuits, and HDL compilation is as complex as any machine code transliteration.

For that matter you can just write machine code on punch cards like they did since Jacquard looms. I guess that makes the idea of 'source' complete bullshit.

>NAS Case Guide. Feel free to add to it:
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/wiki/Home_server/Case_guide

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualisation. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavour of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

>leases and reservations
So you dont reserve an IP so the IP addresses of important things like a NAS or server change constantly?
You dont reserve an IP specifically so you can restrict network access?
>network segments in an extremely simplistic setup utilizing VLANs in a strange way
You actually have no clue whats going on do you? You really have such little knowledge of networking that you don't see that im using VLANS to seperate the wifi clients into 3 groups based on security measures such that they share the same subnet with their respective hardware security groupings via software switch? Man, and you told me I didnt know anything about networking lmao but look at you go showing what you dont know
>terrible addressing schema
Name one thing terrible about it.
>calls other people retarded
Because you literally started name calling first
