/g/ anons who have been here for more than 10 years and still use Windows: why?

>>108528689It's funny you mention LibreOffice. I remember when it randomly corrupted my course assignment that was in ".doc" format. That was almost 8 years ago. LibreOffice is decent if you stick to ODT, but basic features like "Sections" are missing, and its useless for collaborations.

Why are you not using OpenBSD? It is the most secure operating system on the market.

How dependent are you on the cloud? Does anybody do local backups any more?

How old is a /g/ user? Because the older the tech the techier it is, so the chances are high for posting about some way too old subject for a successful thread.
I'm 31 but I'm sure there a lot older people aroundalso tyrian2k is a great game
>>108527536I'm older than 25 and younger than 35.
>>108527536Don't really remember using DOS much just win95. I do remember using the big thin floppies but not the OS we were using. The oldest game I remember playing is lode runner.

Personally, I am using a laptop. Some ThinkPad models are not as modular. I have an X1 Carbon; it is very good. I enjoy being able to move around. Sometimes the couch is uncomfortable, so I want to sit at my desk. Sometimes the desk is uncomfortable, so I want to sit on the couch. I respect the quality of ThinkPads. Do you prefer laptops (not limited to ThinkPads) or desktops?

>>108527398They won't allow that. You have to have the covid barriers and a sob story, and even the loud ass sager is pushing it, but it's compliant with the rules.
>>108526638I am thinking of going this way soon. Current PC is getting on, ill just grab a laptop and hook it into my current monitors and peripherals.
>>108525456Laptop wins it for the majority of people for the portability alone, also building a desk setup with it is also great, especially since it functions as a 2nd monitor if you want, the advantages of a desktop is building it yourself and saving money in the process, and better cooling, also ports without needing a hub, but again for most people a laptop will be just perfect really.

are pc speakers still a thing? i don't want to wear headphones on my head all day like some call center employeebut when i search for PC speakers there are barely any for saleam i supposed to drop hundreds of dollars on an audio interface and some proper speakers or is there some middle ground
if it aint broke dont fix it
>>108523046What I noticed is that the lows were boosted by default with the mids and highs kinda underwhelming, but I tweaked them. I tried to get them positioned as symmetrically as possible and still get comb filtering in my room, the acoustics in general are shit with lots of reverb.
>>108487257The market is in this odd spot right now:>Logitech and Creative are the last two big name players clinging on>5.1 and 7.1 are basically dead, extreme niche at this point, Creative quit it altogether>Creative is slowly dying and they fucking deserve it for what they did to Aureal>Edifier occupies your average consumer price bracket and competes with itself basically>anything above that bracket and you're getting professional studio monitorsYou can still get those shitty small speakers, but now in the advent of smartphones, laptops and Bluetooth speakers they're a dying breed. anyone else paranoid about the lifespan of their devices? everything breaks eventually but i think we're all worried tech will just continue to get more unaffordable (+ unreliable) over time, so we should all be hoarding the older long-lasting tech while they're cheap to maximize the lifetime of our devices.thinking of building my first am5... but it seems wiser to spend that money on pcs like picrel.what's the longest you've ever had tech last /g/? what was it? are you hoarding?
i have a b350 motherboard that is 9 years old. same os ssd and ram as when i boughtered it but i changed the cpu once and gpu once too. had to buy a new power supply since the old one started ticking worryingly. also added a few hard drives and ssds over the years. i have the same 1440p display too since that initial build. been thinking of buydering a mac mini and a nas next as a replacement but i really don't sneed to.

>>108519468systemd breaks this, in fact, because it names network interfaces after where they are on the PCIe bus. The real culprit however is the retarded motherboard firmware that shifts around the entire PCIe topology because you plugged in one more device.
