Apple never had micro SD slots in their phones and then everybody was just copying the iPhone. For lots of people iPhone was their first smart phone and they never even looked at Android, so a large portion of the market never missed it. The others offered microSD but basically most customers valued thinner phones and phones with larger batteries higher than having a microSD slot. So generation by generation of phones less and less phones had it until nobody offered it.
