My dad has been wanting a Glock for quite some time, though he has never owned a gun and isn’t the type of person to go buy one for himself. So I figure it’s the perfect gift to get him for Christmas. The only problem is I’m not sure how my stepmom will react, as they have 2 11 year olds in the house. If I do get him the gun, I also intend to get him a case with a lock on it. For added context, he gifted me my first gun (Mossberg 500) when I was 17, which was kept in their house when I lived with them while the children were toddlers. How should I go about this? ChatGPT says to tell him ahead of time but that seems very gay.

Fuck it, if you don't live with them, just go for it.

Never mind, if you go through with it, make sure to get a good safe for him too and let them know in advance.

Then why are they dunking on the current admin?
>>
>>64675488
Dubya was stupid by Presidential standards. He was still a Yale graduate and could speak at length on policy. Trump is such a fucking retard that he doesn't just have a gaffe where he says he'll lower x by 600%. Instead, he keeps repeating it and making it bigger, which shows he fundamentally misunderstands how percentages work. Trump is an actual moron who was voted in by morons who, because his stupid speech was comprehensible to them, believed themselves to be qualified to opine on policy.

Not gonna spam a bunch of pics, so here's a final collage of my cleaned up display Turkish M1922 Hotchkiss.
As promised, the receiver says "Yes Homo" (اوت لوطي) in Ottoman Turkic and the serial is the trips that won.
Worst part was I had to dremel down a nail to make a replacement pin for the top cover. The pin that came with the kit was completely mangled and wouldn't fit at all. Otherwise, it was a fun project. 10/10 would recommend.

Merry Christmas /msg/!

Why were the huge Qing Dynasty armies so ineffective in the Opium Wars? They have to be the most one-sided wars in history.
88 replies and 22 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>64676060
The Qing dynasty refused to grant exceptional command to any official or governor of any ethnicity.

The Qing emperors themselves used to micromanage campaigns, like Kangxi personally leading armies against the Dzungars, and Qianlong ordering specific Banner officers to lead campaigns in Burma with a specified number of troops assigned to them for the campaign.

The British never faced the entire Qing army on the coast, they skipped over entire idle garrisons to attack only garrisons in strategic positions, which were not reinforced by the other garrisons due to the totally fractured command chain.

Also, communication between cities in China took weeks since there was no telegraph. Messages about battles didn't reach Beijing until weeks after they happened in the First Opium war, and the emperor which tried to micromanage the war from Beijing (never personally going down to oversee the war in the southeast), sent orders which became outdated by the time they arrived.
>>
The Han Green Standard Army general Yue Zhongqi (the conqueror of Tibet for the Qing) also rejected a suggestion for him to rebel against the Qing, because of the fractured command chain.

Yue Zhongqi was a descendant of the war hero Yue Fei during the Song dynasty.

the troops under his command weren't "his". He was rotated and he was assigned to them temporarily and had zero assurances they and the officers under him were personally loyal to him.

If Yue Zhongqi tried to lead his troops to rebel against the Qing, all the officers under him might just refuse to obey and report him for rebellion.

By contrast, the three feudatories like Shang Kexi had their own private armies, with command chain and staff separate from the regular Qing Eight Banners

Shang Kexi appointed his own officers who were personally loyal to him.

The Qing were finally forced to allow private armies again during the Taiping rebellion, with the Huai Army, Xiang Army and other provincial armies commanded by Li Hongzhang, Zeng Guofan and Zuo Zongtang who chose their own officers and raised their own troops.

If the Qing didn't allow this, the Taiping would have continued.
>>
>>64667521
>>64675957
Manchus suffered the most deaths in the Opium wars and Boxer rebellion.

100,000 Manchus died in the Boxer rebellion, and the entire Manchu garrisons of Zhenjiang and Zhapu were killed in the first opium war.

Manchu banner armies were devastated outside of Beijing in the second opium war.
>>
>>64676037
>The real reason for lopsided Qing losses, is because the Qing DELIBERATELY weakened and fractured command of the military to prevent rebellions by military officers.
Coup-proofing really is the bane of any competent military.
>>
>>64667037
Don't buy the chang lies. They didn't actually invent the printing press.
The Chinese used moveable type, but it's not the same thing as a printing press. The Guttenberg press had a frisket and an actual mechanical press, and it used ink dabbers that Guttenberg helped innovate to apply the ink on the type. Also, he made new, durable alloys whereas Chinese character blocks might have used wood (if metal, I don't think they were as usable).
To be fair, the European printing press and Western printing isn't as easy to adapt for Chinese characters. Chinese still used handwriting for a lot of things into the 19th century, and didn't even use a printing press until about then.

For a LARPerator? Yeah maybe. Real soldiers almost always carry a lot more kit than what he has on. Can't see his front but I'm willing to bet he has a three mag placard at most maybe six, only has a single frag pouch and a radio/single mag pouch on his right. Belt kit is critically understocked, only has a single admin pouch/IFAK (Bad location for the later as if you are injured and on the ground you really don't want to have your buddies flipping you over to get at your lifesaving medical supplies at the center of his back, single pistol/TQ pouch right next to a dated drop-leg holster. No hydration pack or backpanels although one could argue he has a day pack somewhere. Overall kit is probably fine for law enforcement/civi use but not enough ammo, grenade, comms, admin, IFAK, hydration, battery, notepad, TQ, warm/wet weather, mission/combat role specific equipment, dump, etc pouches that a modern operator would be carrying.
