Was the Yugoslav military the 4th strongest military in the 80s-90s before it fell apart?
>>64678450no because it was commie army so any strength is just on paper.
>>64680435Even on paper it shouldn't have been the fourth strongest. There was the US and USSR, followed probably by China and then Iraq and Iran, who had been building up throughout the 80s to kill each other. Within Europe, the larger NATO armies (Britain, France, West Germany) were larger and better armed than Yugoslavia's.
>>64678450No, but also yes. It had large manpower reserves with mandatory service that lasted for 2-3 years with war time mobilization putting it upwards of 2 million. t.Slovenia
>>64678450>>64680471Just adding that this claim is popular among former ex-yugoslavs and yugonostalgics but its usually cited as "4th largest in Europe" not the world. It was the largest non-aligned force in Europe though.
>>64678450Vukovar alone answers that question for you.
Why were the huge Qing Dynasty armies so ineffective in the Opium Wars? They have to be the most one-sided wars in history.

Which caliber is better? Does the shorter length of the .308 while being mostly the same ballisticly make it better, or does the slightly longer length and ability to use heavier grain bullets of the 30-06 make it better?Or is 30-06 better because it sounds cooler and is an American classic?
>>64664630First of all, the caliber is exactly the same .308; it is the cartridge that's different. That said, .308 is cheaper and gives very close to the same performance as .30-06 in their respective factory loads. So for the vast majority of shooters .308 is the superior choice. However, .30-06 has a greater case capacity and therefore greater flexibility for hand loads and boutique rounds. So for those shooters that hand load or are chasing niche performance; .30-06 is the superior choice. If you are a military or police force, the savings in weight and material in both the cartridge and the gun that shoots it makes .308 the vastly superior choice.tl;dr : depends on who you are and what you're doing with the round. Mostly .308, but sometimes .30-06.
>>64664630>Which caliber is better? The caliber is the same. :^)Anyway strictly speaking .30-06 will always be superior in theory because the case volume allows it to mog .308.In practice 99% of the time with OTC ammo they're functionally identical.I like .30-08 better for purely aesthetic reasons, the round just looks cooler, .308 is kinda squat in comparison.
>>64664630>Which caliber is better?.308. Period, The End. I don't need to explain myself.
>>64668424>30-06 for anything heavier than 180 grain.Basically, "this". For the average end user, it does not really matter.
>>64677636Is that a Veracity PH? I have one of those. Mine is the 3-15x version. Love it.
No politics, no industrial feasibility or cancellation talk allowed. What is the logical military use case for a huge expensive "battleship" with 3x more displacement than a Ticonderoga and only a few more VLS cells? What advantage could it hold over Flight III Burkes, DDG(X), VPM SSNs, or an SSGN Columbia variant?>1. The core use case would be a large fast cruiser able to escort carriers at prolonged high speeds around the Pacific, in situations where conventional escorts and their oilers couldn't keep up, or would slow the carrier down with UNREP making for risky ASBM attack windows. This is reliant on it being nuclear powered, which isn't confirmed and makes it more expensive and industrially intensive. Perhaps the Navy has done the math and found that cruising around at an unbroken 35 knots is useful to increase the PLA's sea search volume or complicate ASBM kill chains. But it doesn't have that many VLS cells so it must rely on novel weapons as an escort to avoid magazine depletion. >continued
>>64681582>>64681626It's not actually a battleship, it's a cruiser and the USN desparately needs new cruisers to replace the rotting Ticos. The lasers and railguns are aspirational and probably won't make it into the final design. Hopefully the designers come to their senses and put a larger radar on it, but even in the worst case it will still be a very useful ship that the Navy needs as soon as possible. Unfortunately, while calling it a battleship and putting Trump's name on it is a fast track to presidential approval, it makes it a target for Congress and it's unlikely that we will see more than 0-2 of them built.
>>64681626British arrogance and poor preparedness alao played a big part. The Brits failed to do good scouting, hence them bein surprissed by the enemy presence and numbers, and their cannons and ammo were so poorly packed they had trouble with getting ammunition to the front and the guns were never deployed.
>>64681626>No one is actually trying to defend the concept.Maybe there's a reason for it. Did you try asking /pol/? What did they think of it?(seriously, I don't go to /pol/ and I know shit about ships, I'm mostly lurking in these threads and asking basic dumb questions, /k/ is not my main board)

>>64672660>>64672684The tubes for CPS are the same ones as the VPM/APM, they're sized for Trident missiles (87" diameter) and can fit either three CPS or seven TLAM. "12 cells" probably means a single module of 4 tubes like the Virginia or Zumwalt. 12 tubes fitting 3 missiles each at $50m apiece would be absolute insanity, you could damn near build an entire Burke for the price of filling those tubes. Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket.

>>64681775The first movie was a security force of under a hundred in Congolese civil war tier military handmedowns fighting 10,000+ naavi in an EM interference zone over a strategic military target/existential threat of natives assembling to fight them. And Jake as arch traitor/Paul atredes used all his human knowledge of said equipment to get that swarm of naavi to fight on its weaknesses. >With human equipment and a combat helicopter to boot. It was intelligent, stake filled, and most importantly believable. You literally do not like the series and are just gay if you do not want the humans to fight correctly. They still do off camera, with the 8 years they're going to have a damn continent after Jakes latest "victory"
Any hunters on /k/?I've got some serious hunting related questions as of recently.>cop in a european city>hardly have to deal with LIVE wild animals because they're usually just roadkill as part of traffic accident protocolling>until 3 weeks ago when some asshat ran over and crushed a deer's hind legs, then left it crippled and suffering on the road>traffic already backing up because of it>get dispatched to kill/move the wounded animal>sure thing, chief>it was a disaster, still feel bad weeks laterWe're not trained in delivering finishing shots to wounded animals and it's usually not necessary because there are enough hunters in the surrounding counties at any time - until there aren't. Buddy wanted to use her service pistol, I argued for the AR because my logic was "bigger caliber = instant kill, no suffering".Neither of us are hunters and therefore opted for a headshot, which was a bad idea because apparently a deer's brain is really small and the brain stem even moreso. We know hunters usually just aim for the heart, but we looked at the deer and it was just smooth fur everwhere with no real indication where the heart was. It was an adult animal so the heart must've been bigger but unlike with a human torso, it was just a mass of fur. No fucking idea where to safely aim for the heart here?First shot to where the brain SUPPOSEDLY was (Google...) left if violently threshing for 10 seconds before settling down, then it started those rasping breaths and turned it's bleeding head looking at us which was fucked up and honestly pretty sad. We opted to try once more, she aimed for where the brain was and again, spazzing around and more breathing.

>>64681085I second the DM-32UV. It's a bit better than the UV-32, and the airband reception isn't fucked. You can switch between analog/digital with a single button (programmable). 8W~ max. output on high, good battery life. Battery can be charged via dock or directly via USB-C cable. The port is built-into the battery, so if you destroy it you can replace it.Supports crypto on digital, you can set your own AES256 key when programming channels. GPS is built-in, but you need a second device (or buddy) to reference coordinates.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnp597Xv8Yc
How were these used? As a big axe with pointy bits or as a spear with a bit more versatility?
>>64681331It does. As cool as I think this type of weapon is, the Aztecs just were not as technologically advanced (and the macuahuitl is a prime example of how), they would still have lost hard, sickness or not.>>64681305You're completely delusional, the Aztecs lost because they had no guns or horses. >>64674659In most medieval small towns it would be men of the lords retinue. In cities it would be militias. But for example flemish and dutch militias, schuttereijen, who were prominent in the 30 and 80 years war, were expected to do territorial defence and to train regularly. They werent town watch, more like second line soldiers.

>>64681385Reminder that Correz and Pizarro were from families of low nobility who had fought the moors for centuries in the Reconquista. They were even cousins.
