I would agree, but I don’t think it works in TOW - purely because of the scale of the game; at 28mm, on the board the size that it is, I don’t think you can have the kind of environmental effects you would want to shape a battlefield.
>>
>>97341829
>How can GW make terrain/geography/weather become actually important and have serious effects on gameplay in TOW 2e?
Warhammer has two problems that get in the way of this:
battles are way too small: both because the tables themselves are small to make the game more accessible to more people, because the scale and size of the models is significant, and because the combination of threat ranges, line of sight, lethality and chances to manoeuvre are such that the battlelines have engage as fast as possible to make a game work in a timely manner. the moment you add bogs to a table you bog down the game while adding very little in truth, if not just an extremely asymmetrical advantage that makes the game snowball in one direction with no real recourse, which brings me to the second point: armies are not symmetrical, some armies are meant to be fast moving, others to have static gunlines, some armies have a lot of supernatural or exotic elements, and all this makes balancing a weather system way harder than it is when in a historical game you end up having roughly similar combatants with roughly similar interactions

the way to make weather systems work in warhammer, I think, would be to place them ahead of the choice of scenario and of army building, with a known certainty or at least likelihood of the modifier having an influence in the next game, so you decide not to bring gunpowder to a soggy battlefield, or chariots to a muddy one, or dragons and fliers in the eye of a hurricane

but, similarly to how a bog adds little of interesting and interactive to a game and it just bogs things down, those limits to unit types are just that, limits, not really opportunities, and it is particularly damning in a fantasy game compare to a historical game because the fantasy units are highly specialised, and they're also a larger investment and a bigger draw to play the game you would be playing in the first place

and this is all aside from the issue of wanting standardised games because Warhammer's popularity has the side effect that many people get into it on their own, without a dedicated group of likeminded roleplayers, and will look for a standardised way to play with random people to speed up things with people you usually don't know enough to coordinate well with

making weather things part of spells, magic items or army rules fits well often enough, given the fantasy nature of the factions, balances the asymmetry with an associated cost, and is generally sufficient for the desired mental images

Anons, help me with a question.
Unit A is near the Impas. Its front row moves slightly forward. The opponent sees this unit, and their Unit B is on the flank. Then the following happens:
1) The opponent charges Unit B onto Unit A.
2) Unit B has enough movement to maneuver, and after moving, it finds itself in contact with Unit A, touching the corners of its bases.
3) After contact, Unit B turns, ending up in this position.
Question: Is this possible? And another question: if there's another unit instead of the Impas, will it just move an inch?

You can probably do this much faster using gimp with a mosaic filter, that way you can edit your maps directly
>>
I don't use maps that have grids on them because of this.
>>
>>97341474
Find the highest common factor of the image width and height. This will be some multiple (usually 2x or 3x) of the grid size. If this doesn't work it usually means the image has been cropped or scaled weird
>>
>>97341474
I realized this but not on VTT. I've taken to going to the print shop to get big fullsize print outs of every map when we run modules or hardcover adventures only to find when "scaled corrrectly" occasionally over half the map (or more for picture in picture style maps) will be too small/too big. The artists are not paid to care and gridless only became a reality more recently for official 5e kek shit
>>
>>97341942
>This will be some multiple (usually 2x or 3x) of the grid size.
I've noticed this is generally the solution. Most gridded maps you find online need to be Cell Sized up by 2x to fit on Roll20.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

>More than mechanics, more than plot, more than even what the DM wants, the most important thing about a Gygaxian setting is that it is Real.
Lmao this delusional faggot.
>A place where the players might take a look at a situation and go "Not yet. We're not ready." because they know that the dice fall where they may and the DM is just there to be a fair arbiter of what happens, not someone who is preparing the world to their whim.
>It's a place where monsters and NPCs have their own motivations, instincts and goals beyond just "Get hit by the PCs until XP bursts out of our piñata bodies."
You're really jerking yourself over nothing. Also, a DM that slavishly procedurally generates is following a whim to do so, cuz even Gygax said that's for fucking retards and not how rules are supposed to work and he himself didn't even follow his own rules while turning off his brain.
DM's are supposed to be fair arbiters yeah. But you make it sound like they're supposed to braindead because you're so entrenched in villifying "plot" like anything more complicated than "here's random stuff, deal with it" is choo choo railroading.
>>

>More than mechanics, more than plot, more than even what the DM wants, the most important thing about a Gygaxian setting is that it is Real.
Oh wow, that is a particularly dumb line.
>>
Can you sum up for me what are the principles of OSR a DM should follow. It would be ideal if you gave me a brief explanation for each point.

So far I got:
>Player agency
dont restrict your players choices, at all if possible, as little as possible if you need to
>Emergent Storytelling
prepare minimal story, let players decide what they do and how they do it
>XP for gold
reward exp for the gold the players carry out of the dungeon or otherwise obtain
>Do the Book keeping
keep track of time and resources. Follow the procedures for encounters and such
>Natural language
put your PCs in a situation, let players figure out how to get out of the situation, than have them explain to you how they want to solve it, you as the DM decide what mechanics to use

it's all laughs until the non-combat character pulls out an autopistol, the cheapest full auto weapon in the game, and uses Suppressing Fire.
Now your carefully crafted combat encounter runs into a brick wall because the Adept read the rules and realized full auto weapons can completely shut down an entire radius of enemies into cowering behind cover and steal half of their actions. He doesn't need to hit anyone, he doesn't need to deal a single wound of damage, he just needs spare mags (which his Noble background allowed him to buy in plentitudes) and he can turn the entire encounter into a joke that the rest of the Acolytes can mop up in a few turns.
Or, god help you as the GM, the Adept cuts the bullshit and buys a Flamer...

I've spent the last year, studying, and designing a custom Arthurian set, originally intended to be based on Le Morte d'Arthur (like how P3k was based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms).

However, as I continued to study, and look into different (and some obscure sources) this turned into a much more wider net.

This set, which is no where near finished includes
>Welsh Triads and The Magnibong
>Pre-Vulgate Arthur traditions
>Vulgate/Post Vulgate/Lancelot cycles
>some English/Welsh fairy tales
>and even a bit of the Victorian Arthurian revival (especially for art).

I avoided the Italian and German romances entirely, and tried not to include weird outliners except when needed. Outside of art, nothing is sourced from the 20th century or onward. Also all art is public domain.

I'm mainly posting here for feedback. Some will be art recommendations, flavor text (especially sourced) will be always welcomed.

Good first effort. The placement of the beams looks kind of random, and for your next building I think you should try to emulate historical designs more closely.

The Youtube channel Devs and Dice makes great scratchbuilt Mordheim terrain that is easy to copy or use for inspiration. The only downer about his designs is that he uses a ton of individually cut foam bricks that require investment in a foam cutter to emulate properly.

What is the counterculture of 2020s, that could be used as the basis for a contemporary countercultural tabletop game?

Take the World of Darkness for example, which was so grounded in the the counterculture of the 90s that it comes across as dated and strange today. How would you update the World of Darkness so that it better represents the counterculture of today?
