Rebellions in 40k usually happen on a single world, or within a very limited region, and are often isolated before they can spread.

In Star Wars, the rebels are far weaker than the Empire, but because hyperdrives are easy to obtain and relatively safe, they can carry out guerrilla tactics. By contrast, the Imperium in 40k doesn’t have a rebel problem as severe as the Galactic Empire did, because warp travel is terrible and can't really do it without a Navigator

so if the Imperium ever figures out a truly safe form of faster-than-light travel, it would face horrific rebel problems all across the galaxy.

This logic is backwards, I don't get you.
In SW Rebels are an irrelevant nuisance constantly on the run and unable to hold any ground. Explicitly because Empire can respond to any threat quickly due to fast and reliable FTL method.
Rebellions are far worse in 40k because travel and communication is so shit, slow and unreliable that Imperium can't respond to threats fast enough. Normal rebellions by uppity governors, Genestealer Cults and Chaos happen all the time explicitly because of this. They happen, succeed and then create their own empires. Just like rebellions in real life succeed when empires are far away from source of rebellion and can't respond fast and accurately enough. Most notable example being USA.

Rebels are quite literally a bigger issue in 40k
>>
>>97345127
I think, but can't confirm, that it was hinted at the DAOT having a way better form of FTL travel. Warp travel seems to be the Emperor jury rigging a bunch of left over crap to jump-start the Great Crusade, like how Titans are essentially repurposed Pesticide spray bottles.
>>
>>97347060
I don't think so since part of the fall of humanity was the warp chaos created by slaanesh's imminent birth, which fucked up connections and space travel. At the very least it was still vulnerable to warp fuckery.
Not discounting the men of iron, of course.
>>
>>97347087
I just remember really old lore suggesting it, back in the days when the Emperor was implied to be a disgusting mutant who crawled out of a DAOT lab.
>>
>>97345127
>so if the Imperium ever figures out a truly safe form of faster-than-light travel, it would face horrific rebel problems all across the galaxy
...Why? I don't see the connection between the two.
>da emperor
99% of all humans in the imperium will never do any kind of FTL travel. Short of the FTL travel being zero cost teleportation, any kind of FTL would still be monopolized and controlled by the imperium, becauase they have all the money, resources and military might. Worship of the emperor wouldn't stop either, he would remain a god, he just wouldn't actually be doing anything.
> By contrast, the Imperium in 40k doesn’t have a rebel problem as severe as the Galactic Empire
Do the words "Horus Heresy" mean nothing to you?

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

it's been a while since I've come round to these threads. what happened? there's far less discussion and story times, just endless trolling, thread after thread of the same shit too.

anyways, it's been a long hiatus since my party has gathered, due to a combination of the holidays and my schedule changing. the party essentially wiped on floor 3 of stonehell. two of them were paralyzed and captured, they may yet live. when we finally play again, I've introduced the additional classes from ose's advanced rules. really looking forward to it.

Yes, they are. By the way, can you quote me where exactly in the DMG he says that, because that's very based.

He has made a fool himself in numerous ways on numerous occasions, and has even begun actively bothering other threads

Also, consider our non-Sith puppet Mandalores:

With that competition, Mandalore the Ultimate becomes the clear winner.

Depends how much you like Carcassonne. If you do, get the big box. It has room for other expansions that are not included.

Is Captain's chair an upgrade from the Imperium games? I saw anons claim it's very thematic but I don't know or care about star trek, is it still better than Imperium if you don't care about the theme?

Got to play Galactic Cruise tonight

really great game and very well designed, but my group did NOT like it, they like euros but it was 'too much'

I think it really wasn't that bad but I guess I understood it better, it was all our first times playing but it was very clear I was going to win near the end.
>>
>>97347088
>really great game and very well designed,
Die in a fire. There's almost no meaningful decisions to be made. At the start you can race people for the bonus cubes, between launches you sometimes have meaningful choices between the cruises you can draft, and the rest of the game is just checking boxes. Most of the boxes can be checked at 2 (or 3) different places but one of them is obviously correct for whatever else you're doing.
And if you took just the meaningful decisions and packaged them into a (much) shorter game no one would buy it because it would still be a lackluster experience. The only thing Galactic Cruise has going for it is it's production value.
>>
>>97344091
Speaking on the current edition big box, I think it's a good package. You get expansions 1 and 2, which many basically consider part of the base game, so you would likely want to get them anyway. I never play without 1, even when testing a new expansion. 2 is also great. The minis are basically a bonus and let you add more variation in small steps as you like. Past big boxes had more regular size expansions, but I don't think this one loses out in comparison. What is a bit of a bummer is that you don't get more than six player colors. I really like purple and grey from my 2014(?) big box.

>>97347092
Never played historicals but why even use miniatures. Why don't you just use tokens or just paper with the unit names written on it. Would save you a lot of time and money if you give zero shits about the aesthetics of the game.

This is what esportification at it's worst looks like. You have two identical armies with barely painted minis fighting on a shitty looking table.
>>
>>97347092
Complaining about this shit has nothing to do with historicals, it's just caring about your hobby and being dismayed to see a lack of effort and caring become so normalized

We're going to have to come up with a phrase for the new era of Warhammer 40,000 ushered in by the Amazon TV show, DoW 4 and Total War 40k, and increased market value of Games Workshop.

nu40k isn't going to cover it. nu40k is already bad enough for many of us from headier days like 1st through 4th edition. You are going to see horrific debasements to the thing you know and love that you will still see with your eyes closed. Every 80 IQ person with internet access will have an opinion on Warhammer without knowing what a Tau Remora Drone is.

I feel like Fallout isn't the same thing at all.
Fallout has some lore, some depth and some decent entries but nowhere near the quantity of WH and the last thing hardcore fans of the series genuinely care about came out 15 fucking years ago. Fanbase was barely alive anyway. Bethesda turned the setting it into pretty much a franchise that exists only to push merch and low quality products a long time ago and the TV series was exactly that, also clearly aimed at normie-normies

Meanwhile 40k still has very large, active and alive communities that are going to get flooded and gradually morphed into something largely different. TV show secondaries will probably be largely deflected, but game secondaries from Total War or DoW4 often do try to stick around and get into fandom, despite usually sticking out like a sore thumb
>>
>>97346133
Lmao. You lost that battle decades ago brother. Still seething about Matt Ward and Newcrons too?
>>
>>97344553
>>97344605
DoW4 will either flop or at best people will beat campaigns and uninstall it. Gay krauts will fuck it up, that's given, they clearly have no idea what they are doing nor do they feel the setting.
Whatever Cavill and Amazon are doing has a high chance of being so shit that it will forever mark 40k as bad and cringe for normalfags and thus halt it's momentum. Like Rings of Power or Netflix Witcher. A blessing in a disguse.
TW40k tho is a guaranteed massive success. Might be the most popular strategy game even, challenging HoI4. And it will live on for years.
Dark Heresy will do far better than other Owlcat games and most of other games in a genre, but it's still just an isometric crpg which will limit it's reach.
SM3 will be just SM 2.5 and so will do even better as well.

Evening lads, I don’t suppose anyone knows of a trove containing all the old PnP games by The Perfect Captain? I’m mostly interested in their medieval rules/games especially Ironbow II, Strongbow, Princes of the East, In the Shadow of Byzantium, Villehardouin, Alexius 1113 AD etc.

Cheers boys, happy new year.

>>97344408
Wikipedia will get you participants. As for heraldry, it isn’t that common before the 13th C and even then, we rarely know the arms even for big names. There are usually fictive arms for the earlier period made up in the later middle ages, if you aren’t asspained to the Nth degree about historical accuracy.

There is the additional difficulty in that the eastern mediterranean societies the Latins found themselves in did not themselves use arms as in the west, even much later than this - this may have meant that local Latin settlers felt little pressure to take arms as it was not the local ‘fashion’.

Sorry it’s a ballache, but I hope it helps. I think it means that you can actually be quite free in your painting without being implausible or even inaccurate.

At what age do magic users start training in your setting?
40 replies and 4 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>97330092
magical aptitude usually manifests at around 12 but some prodigies manifest it at a younger age.
Some wizards take in students as young as 8 before they show signs of magical aptitude if any on their parents had magical ability, gambling on getting ahead of the curve and raising a powerful apprentice. Most of the time they just get a decent but utterly nonmagical helper but the 1 time out of 10000 it works out the extra years of early magical training pays off extremely well.
some wizards take on very young apprentices for other reasons as well.
>>
Depends. Wizards ideally start as soon as the kid has learned to read and write, while shamans and the like either follow whatever local tradition they might have, or get snatched by fairies and come back as raving magic lunatics two hundred years later. Priests begin training whenever, it doesnt really matter; if you can get a god to think you're his nigga, you get magic powers.

Welcome to /wbg/, the official thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games.

Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art (either created by you or used as inspiration for your work). Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback or post whatever relevant input you might have!

Absolutely. Asteroid composition is anything but monolithic, as it were, but loosely falls into 3 categories, C, M, and S type. Those are easy to remember since they are short for carbon, metal, and silicate, or stony. C-type, carbon rich asteroids, are the most common, making up 75% of asteroids, while S-type, silicate or stony asteroids, comes in a distant second at 17% , M-type Metallic asteroids are much less numerous.

Now when it comes to mining that hardly tells the whole story, M-types are mostly nickel and iron, neither of which we’d particularly want to bring home to Earth, but which would be valuable for building stuff in space. For that matter there are also several sub-types of asteroids and two different classifications systems, and the asteroid belt is anything but the only place you can find asteroids nor the nearest place to find them. It also is not unusual for two asteroids of different types to blunder into each other and merge or to be somewhere in between these types.

C-types, the most common asteroid and also the ones that gets ignored a lot in asteroid mining conversations focused on impressing folks with the idea of mountains of gold, are quite valuable themselves. They contain lots of water, which is never a bad thing to find in outer space. But they also contain plenty of life-useful elements and particularly noteworthy is phosphorus. Something that is quite hard to find on Earth in concentration and a major bottleneck on agriculture, so if asteroid mining ever gets heavily developed and cheap, that is the sort of thing we might bring home since it is valuable. Not as valuable as gold or platinum of course, nowhere near, and these big space boulders have a lot of those.

it would probably be easier to just mine out the inside and build your habitat in there

Extra lad to the roster. These guys are heavily augmented and armored, elite cavaliers that specialize in close combat and being bodyguards to the Baryxian nobility.

The first mistake you make is thinking magic is something to systematize.
