there is always room for that, anon
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Somosierra
>Some authors have assumed that Napoleon had gone out of his mind in ordering the Polish to charge batteries of 16 cannon over several kilometers of extremely difficult terrain.[3] Others, however, think Napoleon ordered only the closest battery to be taken, in order to open the way for his infantry, and that Kozietulski had misunderstood the order.[4]
>No matter – once the charge had begun, and the chevaux-légers found themselves under fire from the second battery, they had no choice but to press the attack, as the horses went to the highest speed and were unable to stop.
>They took the second and third batteries but only a few of them reached the last battery, and the Spanish attempted to recapture it. It was then that Napoleon saw his chance and immediately committed the other squadrons.
>The charge that continued to the last battery was led by Niegolewski, who miraculously survived a fierce attack by Spanish troops – he received nine wounds from bayonets and two carbine shots to the head.

I think it's ironic to say this era is anti-individualistic, when it's literally defined by an individual becoming one of the most important people in the world by uprooting centuries of tradition by himself.

4th had a few different options of play. It had a "Kill Team" ruleset, which was a kill team vs brutes, basically player controlled mooks. It also had a city fighting ruleset which was single model units IIRC. Although google says it was a separate supplement, but I am sure the core book had it too because I never owned any supplements.

I've always wanted to see a Lord of the Rings story that takes place after the War of the Ring has concluded. A band of a half-dozen Orcs and two Goblin Warg-Riders from Mordor fleeing in the wake of Gondor and Rohirrim entering it, because they don't want to be wiped out (whether or not the Men actually intend to do this isn't clarified).

These Orcs are still evil, to be clear. But we'd basically follow a sort of reverse-Fellowship as they travel from Mordor north, to Dol Guldur, because they're chasing rumors that Dol Guldur hasn't fallen, is holding out in the wake of Sauron's defeat.

And the point would be to show that while they're evil, it's because they were shaped to it, not born to it. And it doesn't consume their every waking moment. We get moments of camaraderie, of humor, genuine friendship between the Goblins and their Wargs (who, remember, can speak) and of course the entire journey is one of desperate hope.

Of course this being a tragedy, as they near Dol Guldur they'd come across an Orc fleeing from it - it's fallen to the Dwarves. Dwarves to the north, Men following from the south, this band of Orcs trapped in the middle.

So the story concludes with them deciding to make a last stand against the Dwarves and Men, preferably at some historically significant ruin. And the final chapter is the battle in which they fall, one by one, while we also see them working together, defending each other, being aggrieved when one of them falls because they knew them...essentially everything that would go into a last stand if the characters were Men or Elves or Dwarves, it's just that instead we're following Orcs and Goblins and Wargs.

They probably take up a song during the whole thing, something Orcish, something about battle that's nevertheless also somehow about the pointlessness of it all. Something tired.

The last surviving Orc, run through by a sword, manages to finish the song.

"It's done."

Trite "le heckin subversion xD" garbage. Predictable and boring, and not in line with established LotR lore, within which the orcs were an extension of the discord of Melkor within the Song of the Ainur.

Reconsider suicide.

>dagger deals more damage than broadsword

Nta and i don't like Daggerheart (too gimmicky and too specifically set to its flavor of fantasy) but for the matter, like that anon, i do like games that are supposedly antithetical like gurps and prime time adventures for example.
>>
>>97376611
>t. has never been stabbed
Dagger should be d12 at least.
>>
>>97376717
I like how GURPS, in a way, has both weapons that favor STR or DEX, but it's more subtle.
Big weapons like great axes favor STR because they have higher higher STR requirements, often inflict Swing damage (which gets better damage-scaling than Thrust), and high STR often goes hand-in-hand with higher HP and encumbrance; so you can afford a somewhat lower weapon skill (almost all physical skills are based on DEX), and just go on All-Out Attack for a to-hit bonus, relying on your high HP and heay armor to protect you. Bigger weapons also get longer reach, which means shorter-reach opponents will have to take a penalty to attack and/or defenses if they want to get close to you and hit you on the same turn.
Small weapons like daggers favor DEX because they have low STR requirements, often inflict Thrust damage (which gets worse damage-scaling, so high STR is less effective), but often inflict Impaling damage which can target armor gaps and vulnerable hit locations like the eyes and vitals. These attack options get huge damage multipliers, but also come with huge attack penalties, so having high skill is favored. Also, since you won't have as much HP or armor as beefier fighters, you'll have to rely on dodging and parrying to stay alive, which also favor high skill.
But it's not totally one way or the other. You can make a beefy dagger fighter (especially with grappling, like >>97383277) or an agile barbarian warrior. Unlike many other systems I've played, it pays to be a balance of strong and skilled; you don't have to be just one or the other. It's realistic and intuitive, and I like that.
>>
>>97382749
I used to insist on targeted attacks but changed my view after playing some Twilight 2000 4e, random locations actually make armor pieces like helmets matter and partial armor on limbs etc. can be crucial for survival
>>
If you wanted to be realistic, you'd need some sort of reach and clearance mechanics to represent how restrictive a large weapon is in tight quarters or when the enemy is already in your face, as well as how utterly fucked a dagger-wielder is when the other guy's sharpened stick outranged his by a factor of ten. As for the actual damage potential, you'd need a million rules for edge alignment, different armours with different weak points, different abilities to turn a cutting attack into a blunt one, to where you can model the difference between getting daggered in the armpit vs taking a sword blow to your helmeted head.

A broken clock may be right twice a day, but you can't tell when it is right unless you have a second, working, clock to compare it to.
This is not a redeeming factor of the broken clock, because if you have a working clock to check it by then you don't need to reference the broken one at all. The maximally useful information the broken one could convey is done as a matter of course by the working one.
Your only concern should be potentially misidentifying a slow clock (potentially useful if you are aware of its limitations) as a broken one.

I wonder if picking up a copy of the Monsters! artbook now still nets me the Great Beast promo card, since it was exclusive to the first edition but still shows up in the specific one I'm looking at. I should ask the seller. Card's sadly a lot cooler than the Cthulhu promo too, despite the nice effects on it that one is a very bog standard pop rendition of the guy and I'd have liked something more in line with the book. I'll probably pick up a box of Dinosaurs late this year if the cards are on the same level of quality.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: what's the best classic GURPS cover art?

Next week, the party will continue on their mission to seek out and potentially destroy a hobgoblin war camp. Turns out that they’ve set up shop in an ancient and no longer functioning adamantine forge (the party has a chunk of mythril ore) and they’re using Goliath slaves (one party member is a Goliath, and this is his tribe). I’m trying to gauge how the party is going to go about this because even though I know for a fact that they’re bloodthirsty but will probably be more reserved once they realize how many hobgoblins are here. Also trying to find out ways to drain resources through this that isn’t explicitly combat, as well as figuring out a boss they’d have to fight to reactivate the forge that isn’t just a rip-off of Grym from BG3.

Yeah, it leaves me scratching my head.

Hey, that's a very thoughtful answer, thanks. It's understood in our group that the Steam Deck fella plays D&D quite passively. He's only familiar with a couple of his spells, he'll take his turn promptly in battle but without much consideration of his options, and will rarely act outside of battle unless one of us makes a specific suggestion. But he never misses a session, he clearly enjoys being there, and will happily gush about the battles and situations we faced afterwards.

Depends on what's going on I guess. To me the steam deck one is too far, but I don't mind the others.
If it's combat that's been going on for hours, I fully expect players to be checked out on their off turn, and as long as they're still paying attention for when I call out their names for their turns or if they're targeted, I don't care.
Same with a 1 on 1 moment involving a different player. If they aren't in the scene. I know how some people are, and I've had my share of people in games who aren't the most vocal, who look checked out, but at the end of a session they'll be the first to happily talk about the session or will gush about some moment 5 months ago that's stuck in their head and shows that they're clearly enjoying the game.

Well, the hobgoblins themselves are probably going to be relatively spread out both inside and partly outside the structure of the forge itself.
Since it's a forge, the hobgoblins could also have set up a bunch of traps making use of it. Walls of molten metal blocking off hallways, or fire traps here and there.
You could also potentially have some disgruntled goblins the hobgoblins are using as miners or laborers, and so the party might have a chance to try and talk to them for some info.

The forge itself could also already be active, but the challenge instead is to wrest control away from whatever the hobgoblins have cooked up to defend it. A Fire Myrmidon would fit, but if that's a bit too high grade, it could be as simple as a bugbear, ogre, or troll that they've kitted out with plate armor and a flaming sword.
A troll could be interesting for some environmental interaction, since they're weak to fire.
