What happened with Vanguard? I used to play back before the second reboot.
>>97360202
>I mean when you fuck it up like Altered TCG
Whatever happened with that? I had no intention of ever touching the game due to all the red flags, but I'm definitely curious.

Okay so in a nutshell
>Original Kickstarter smashed it out of the park 7 million dollars for a 60,000 dollar goal
>Releases 4 more sets afterwards
>boxes of first set only need 1 or 2 boxes for a complete set of lower rarity cards and only need to buy singles of higher rarity so most don't bother buying boxes
>LGSes asked to host events for the card game but the main distributor for the cards are the online shop so the physical stores can't make any profit selling the boxes for markup because no one will buy it there when they can just buy it online
>newest kickstarter set seeds of unity originally has a set goal of 50k, easily hit
>whoa whoa WHOA hold on a minute, we actually meant the goal was 2.5 MILLION dollars for our crowdfund! We can't print the set unless we get our 2 mill!
>people cancel preorders and spread the word that the game is dying
>crowdfund falls short, damage control by creators, "we didn't meet our goal but we will still ship the set, in the future we will have to readjust our production line"
All in all, their booster box prices are crashing HARD and it's in meltdown mode. People want to sell out before all interest dies. Not sure if they can recover honestly.
It might be fun to buy if they end up being like $5-10 in the future just to crack packs
>>
>>97360568
Damn, sounds like they got greedy. To be fair, it kinda felt like they were greedy to begin with, what with the whole NFT-adjacent nonsense about an online database for "ownership" of the cards.
If it all collapses, I'd definitely pick up a few boxes to try if it was dirt cheap.
>>
can riftbound kill one piece already and absorb the scalperbase so i can get cheap product again

Felt inspired to take a stab at a diorama, so, I'm going to try making the retreat to Khazad-dum. Got the goblins ordered, and once they arrive I'll take a break from the Fellowship, but for now... Gimli and Legolas are still WIP, but Merry and Pippin are as done as they're going to be until the diorama is farther along and I make any OSL decisions

>>97360495
You should just go into the tutorial mega image dump in the OP, and look at the how to paint black guides. They aren't quite what you're after, but if you just use blues instead of greys, I think it'll be perfect

I had something like that on some cloth, base black, then a couple of thin layers of neron abyss (it's old as fuck, discontinued since a lifetime ago and about to die, but that's what I used), then highlights. If you want to stick to your image, I'd add some teal and maybe light green, in order not to use pure white into the mix, or maybe bone white.

I haven't watched any limited coverage yet, but I had that exact fear once I started looking through the set with limited in mind. It seems like Kithkin and Goblins are going to require a lot of anchors in the deck to give you a fighting chance against the other tribes, and Elementals really want you to either pull a bunch of rares/mythics or at least be able to run a bunch of hybrid cards that cross paths with blue or red. Everything else looks either half-baked or mediocre compared to Elves and Merfolk.

What fascinates me is that green has only has a handful of options for colorfixing, with only red and blue getting one landcycling ability EACH, when the only 3+ color cards in the set are Abzan and Sultai, which means most decks probably won't be able to get 3+ off vivid at least half the time. Ironically, your best bet for vivid will probably be tokens made by monocolored cards since they always have their tribe's color identity.

I haven't cared about MTG in the better part of a decade at this point, but from memory the competitive constructed rule of thumb with cards that cost >=4 is that they have to do at least one of several things to be viable:
- be resistant to removal (e.g. hexproof)
- does something useful the turn it hits the field (e.g. haste)
- do something useful even if removed (bloodbraid elf was the posterchild for this back in my time)
- wins the game on the spot if it sticks for a turn

This card does none of those, and thus probably sucks in competitive constructed. A 6/6 that can be chump blocked or removed by a wide range of removal isn't winning the game reliably, and its ability to generate card advantage requires that you already have gas in the tank in the form of other creatures in hand (and your opponent have no removal) which means that IMO it qualifies as a win-more card. I would expect that this would only see play if the lineup of high CMC finishers is so dogshit that any undercosted beefy body is competitive.

Black Hand/Tal'mahe'Ra isn't involved from what little info I've been provided, they aren't the type to create an abomination let alone let it run free.

We discussed what to do with Boy Toy again after mom was done calling everyone, and we unanimously agreed to attempt an erythroexchange combined with a plasma exchange. If the problem is caused by abomination blood, we just had to replace it.
Of course we didn't drain the guy by ingesting that shit ourselves, but with a modernized version of the ancient medical practice of bloodletting, then squeezed some 17 blood bags and 4 liters of plasma in his mouth.

Mom asked big bro how "it" felt.

He told her the story of how he got the largest pelt for her coat. It was an old male Amur leopard which wasn't fertile anymore and behaved as if he was born in the wild.
He had his mates put that corner of the City That Never Sleeps to sleep by cutting off electricity, phone & internet network and so on. Boy Toy's target had escaped from the zoo and he had to chase it in a building. If anyone remembers that random couple of posts about an "agile piece of shit" in all caps >>97202586 >>97202612 and me telling him to turn the smartwatch off, that was the context.

Turns out Cope's been a buddy of his for a while, she used her mastery of her clan's Disciplines plus Dominate and her computer wizardry to make sure nobody in the flat would have memories of records of the incident.
Their date on the execution night on Orthodox Xmas plus two more nights was his way of paying her back. He's also paying for Scarlet's classes in Dementation, Obfuscate and psych by taking Cope for a ride in the snow with the 1300hp Subaru.

He then answered Mother's question: "That fucker's vitae tasted better than finally snapping the Amur leopard's neck after that long hunt in a dark urban jungle AND watching Mother 'fuck the lady in the mirror' with the finished fur coat AND our latest two SM orgies - combined."

Mom probed his memories then gave bro a big furry hug.

After reviewing the memories of my childer, the updated theory is that the abomination had to be a young lupine, this would explain how physically weak by werewolf standards it was. Man of Florida told me abominations struggle with using both Disciplines or Gifts, that too is consistent with how the fight went.
>>97358889
>If you could share info on the abomination and whatever made it, I'd like to pass it along to people who'd be interested.
>>97359706
>what kind of abomination it is
I had Mercury Lamp draw it from said memories, do you have any better idea than my clumsy speculations?
Because all I can think of is:
>Black Spiral Dancer becomes ronin over being too weak, but not weak enough to die instantly from being hunted by kindred, kine, lupines for and against Gaia
>Nosferatu (Antitribu?) adopts a cub but doesn't have anyone in his information network to tell them an embrace will kill or do worse to his beloved pet
>Stupid cub shook the tentacle of a Tzimisce
Regardless of how it came into being, just thinking about how many levels of "being rejected" an abomination must be on is giving me headaches.

On the subject of pain, Scarlet had her first Fortitude lesson from Princess Charming, and now she understands another reason why Ventrues would seek the company of an attractive lady, and ask her to do things to them.

Now that he's sung the highest praises imaginable for that vile fluid, we know we're not ready to release little brother back into the civilized part of the world yet.
We're still in uncharted territory, as this is the part where we watch for delayed effects and wait for withdrawal symptoms. My money is on apathy.

How much would/should changing the default setting from High Medieval to Late Bronze Age change the game?

For example, lowering AC across the board to simulate the lack of general armour. How much would that affect balance?

I'm going to recommend against this unless your group of friend have never touched the game before. It is a lot easier to start at Advanced and work your way downward from Advanced -> Genesys -> Legacy formats (TOSS, HAT, Edison, GOAT) -> Speed Duel than it is to do the opposite. There's also no real shortage of casual decks in every one of those formats I mentioned.
>>
>>97352453
>>97352989
So dice are out of the table, can I use bottle caps or coins instead? I'm playing Enneacraft currently and I honestly felt very comfortable using dice for counters.
>>
>>97359520
Yes. Bottlecaps and coins are legal counters, as long as each individual counter is represented by an individual coin or bottlecap (coins are also the most commonly-used counter). You could probably also find some models for counters pretty easily, if 3d printing is an option.
>>
>>97359520
You can use dice just fine. You can't use the faces to represent counters, but you can use the individual dice for that ie 2 counters = 2 dice. It's far better like this since most fancy deck boxes have a compartment for dice, meaning there's a lower chance of cheating since you can just pull them out/store them as needed.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Hydrate and sleep well, Anon. May Gary (pbuh) send you dreams of dragons and tavern wenches.

This is an extremely pedantic reply that is ignoring the spirit of what I'm asking.
Generally I agree with you.
But I'm not asking about how you would run a game, I'm asking about what you as a human and a DM prefer to run, something that is either generally shallow yet broad, or narrow yet deep
>>
>>97360858
And may you have twice the number
>>
>>97360863
>I'm not asking about how you would run a game, I'm asking about what you as a human and a DM prefer to run
Odd distinction. By and large, DMs run what they prefer to run. Why DM, otherwise?
>>
>>97360863
>'m asking about what you as a human and a DM prefer to run, something that is either generally shallow yet broad, or narrow yet deep
I'm with the other anon that this is a very odd and artificial distinction. Everything starts off narrow and shallow when you begin prep, and you fill things out from there. They grow less shallow or less narrow as needs be, and you'll eventually have a wide variety of environments in a range of depth and width.
There's no hard line between one and the other.

And I don't give enough of a shit about the meta structure of it to have a preference one way or the other as a player or as a DM.
I'm less interested in whether dungeon A is shallow/wide while B is deep/narrow than I am that Dungeon A might have humanoid factions players can interact with, but most of the treasure is art-based stuff that will require time and men to remove and carry off, while dungeon B has easily ported coins, but is full of nasty undead. That's a more interesting kind of distinction, on both sides of the screen.

>I tend to want other species to never look like an upright walking animal. This goes for fantasy races or aliens in a scifi. I always thought just two legged upright standing dog/horse/rat/cat/pig/etc was just being lazy.
Same, but then when you just stick an animal head on a human body and call it a demon or something I'm suddenly fine with it so I guess I'm just a hypocrite

Peak in the sense that they are a real and terrifying threat, as opposed to comical bad guys you meet on low-level dungeons.

Do you include seasonal changes in your campaigns when time goes by?

If so, what do you implement int the world to showcase the changing seasons?

I personally include sea raiders who begin assaults on the kingdom's shores in spring and through summer, who then return to their homeland in fall to winter it out. So essentially a raiding season for my world's vikings, like in real history.

>The revolution/orbit of Earth doesn't determine seasons
I said that a longer revolution of the planet around its star would make them last longer.
>>The planet needs to have a slower revolution around its star for seasons to last for years.

>the axis does
This was also not disputed. Higher axial tilt = more seasonal effects.
>>Axial tilt determines the severity of the extremes the planet experiences in its seasons.

You okay?

>luckily i've never had a campaign last long enough in-world to worry about anything after summer.
I find this funny, you can have a season change in a single session if you so desire, but for some reason most of you have never encountered it.

STRICT TIME RECORDS MUST BE KEPT!

but yeah, if you're of the mindset where D&D is more like a novel or film, you can do a "6 months later..." transition, cool. although i might get annoyed if it's just for the sake of "now we're doing a WINTER adventure!" like the world's natural order is just a dial being flicked around at random.
(even narrativist/storygames guys must hate that shit.)

>gameplay
For Centaurs, you should be able to use them as mounts when not in combat if they're lightly armed & armored. I think you could ride into battle with them and fight on their back without overburdening them, depending on your loadout. Squeezing into dungeons and caves might be a bit of a bitch, and your centaur companion may find themselves too cumbersome to accompany you in certain locations. If people in wheelchairs can make do, I'm sure a transmog potion or a shrinking potion might solve the problem.
>fantasy settings
They're more at home here for sure, like having a horse. Some taverns may give you a hard "no" for your centaur companion, but I'm sure regions that are steeped in centaur culture or adjacent ones have accommodations for their unique anatomy. If nothing else, they could help carry your camp supplies and other provisions.
>loadouts for fantasy
If you're not riding them, I think they can be pretty well armed and armored- think tower shield and a mace/flail. They also make good spearmen, so I think they'd be comfortable wielding a halbard and similar pike-style weapons. This would be with them wearing plate mail cuirass for the human portion and chainmail curtain over their horse hind quarters, or perhaps some specially fitted Gambeson. Other plate sections could be fitted to their horse body as needed. Archery and crossbows seem like they'd work for ranged options. I've not considered them using magic, but having a fairly mobile spellcaster seems cool as well.

I tend to make centaurs native American-inspired.

Usually, their lore for me is
> They used to be savages in the plains/hinterlands, but they were subdued and civilized by the more "sophisticated" races.

I'm open to any system as long as it's not overly complicated. I've heard good things about Pathfinder and GURPS.

That's not how it's done in D&D? I thought it was.
I was thinking of D&D-style movement when I suggested that anyway.
