>>97355518>>97354184PTA and PTU (which is based on PTA) are a total slog. You basically need tools, because there's so much fucking crunch. The powerscaling gets pretty insane too, since trainers can potentially learn how to use moves like Pokemon do.You can play Pokerole instead, which is much less cumbersome, and takes inspiration from Storyteller system, but you might need to be ready to improvise and homebrew some things.
>>97356918pokerole is pretty promising, I'm not looking for a full package just a startpoint I can simplify further to introduce the concept of rpgs to 10-year-olds. PTA, PTU, Oddysee and PTR yeah they seem too complex for that.
>>97357118Part of the issue with PTA/PTU is that the math tries to resemble the video games too much. It just bogs everything down with bookkeeping, and makes generating new things laborious.Pokerole is simple. Attribute+Stat=Dice Pool and roll for successes is the type of thing. It's meant for more fast and loose adventuring, with a style closer to the manga, and where you can control the scale of the game as a GM by using the sort of tier system for what trainers are capable of doing.

>gameplayFor Centaurs, you should be able to use them as mounts when not in combat if they're lightly armed & armored. I think you could ride into battle with them and fight on their back without overburdening them, depending on your loadout. Squeezing into dungeons and caves might be a bit of a bitch, and your centaur companion may find themselves too cumbersome to accompany you in certain locations. If people in wheelchairs can make do, I'm sure a transmog potion or a shrinking potion might solve the problem.>fantasy settingsThey're more at home here for sure, like having a horse. Some taverns may give you a hard "no" for your centaur companion, but I'm sure regions that are steeped in centaur culture or adjacent ones have accommodations for their unique anatomy. If nothing else, they could help carry your camp supplies and other provisions. >loadouts for fantasyIf you're not riding them, I think they can be pretty well armed and armored- think tower shield and a mace/flail. They also make good spearmen, so I think they'd be comfortable wielding a halbard and similar pike-style weapons. This would be with them wearing plate mail cuirass for the human portion and chainmail curtain over their horse hind quarters, or perhaps some specially fitted Gambeson. Other plate sections could be fitted to their horse body as needed. Archery and crossbows seem like they'd work for ranged options. >>97358933They know enough to make a Disable a Device check at least, although how much more than that kind of depends on the hazard. The relevant rules here are (as listed here https://2e.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?ID=2846):Detecting a Hazard:>"Every hazard has a trigger of some kind that sets its dangers in motion. For traps, this could be a mechanism like a trip wire or a pressure plate, while for an environmental hazard or haunt, the trigger may simply be proximity. When characters approach a hazard, they have a chance of finding the trigger area or mechanism before triggering the hazard. "Later in that same block of text:>"Anyone who succeeds [a secret Perception check against the hazard's Stealth DC] becomes aware of the hazard, and you can describe what they notice."The first quote specifies that they're rolling to detect the trigger area or mechanism, and the second clarifies that a successful perception check makes them aware of the hazard, with the GM describing what the character actually notices in the world. Nowhere does it say that they learn what the hazard *is*, although it's often obvious (e.g. the mechanics of a hidden spike pit are pretty clear once you've noticed it), and when it's not I imagine a relevant Recall Knowledge would probably tell them more about it.What's clear, however, is that they've definitely found it, and they can make a roll to disable it. The rules for disabling hazards are a little further down:Disabling a Hazard:>"A character must first detect a hazard (or have it pointed out to them) to try to deactivate it."Comment too long. Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. >>97357375>I am thinking of that room having a ladder up to a hatch right by the entrance of the dungeon - this being the lower level - to cut escaping players off.I'm not sure I understand how a potential escape route might serve to cut the PCs off. Are you suggesting the dungeon inhabitants have reinforcements up there who will come down? Or is the idea that PCs will not find the ladder/not think to use it to flee if they do find it, and the undead will thus use it to get to the exit before the players and maul them there?Anyway, as long as it's discoverable I can't personally see a huge issue with it as long as you're okay with the PCs using it to escape faster if they find it, instead. Multiple passages between levels is ideal.
>>97358748You're not very intelligent
>>97356147>>97356150primarily, the loot increase is only for magic items, not gold. this will give them a gold sink in having to get many items identified or scrounge up scrolls. experimentation can still be used, but a scroll or identify spell is immediate and thorough, without the risk of being cursed. that's my thought anyway. maybe I've been playing too much POWDER and shattered pixel dungeon.
>>97356839If you're using stock software for the kindle don't waste your time. If you're using 3rd party software, don't waste your time.Physical dimensions 5.6" (142 mm) by 4.2". Pic related is what you'll see at various zooms. The coloured boxes match the colorsoft ar. I could have just told you to zoom the long side of each box to 5.6" on your screen but I went to the extra effort to make those details. They're 840 px on the long side, same as the colour res of the colorsoft so you can zoom them to 5.6" as well. It's all readable but it's a poor experience. If you abandon the native software, which you'll do unless you're stupid, reflow doesn't improve things very much for a pdf full of tables, some of them sideways. The zoom, column and and scroll when zoomed options help but not a lot. Native search options are poor. The 3rd party software searches are better.Reflow and search rely upon the book being oef or properly ocred. A lot of lazy people use fully automated ocr on poor scans and leave thousands of errors. There's a really good chance a search will miss that one instance of "ultravision" you really needed. Page searching through an actual paper book can be a lot faster than tapping through an ebook. The colorsoft is very well named because the colour is soft. Colour murders the resolution from 300 ppi to 150 ppi. Fine for comic books, not good when you have a text dense document like a D&D rule book. They have the technology to make the colour 300ppi but they throw on a cfa and still charge premium price. The book switching is still a major hassle. It's one book loaded at a time like most tablets. If you can handle book switching on a tablet you'll have about as much success on a kindle with 3rd party software.I would recommend laptop, tablet, other ereader in that order with the ereader as a last resort. Unless you're playing outside the contrast of a led screen is good enough. The extra size of even a 10" tablet makes a huge difference.

Post lore retcons that would piss you off For me Horus comes back and is the one sitting on Golden Throne
>>97359435Why would I go out of my way to think of scenarios that would piss myself off?
>>97359435I agree with the other poster, what a daft thought exercise. Probably the worst thing I could think of already happened anyway with Lion pardoning The Fallen, removing anything interesting they and the DA had going. I haven't kept up with nu-lore mostly due to this stupidity, but what drives the Angels now? Are they still all secretive and still race away from engagements, or what's their shtick now?
>>97359530They're still searching for Fallen, but Lion does the initial investigation. If he decides they were cool, they become a Risen. If he decides they were a nigger, then he lets the Interrogator Chaplains do their thing. The Dark Angels are doing what they normally do. The Lion is doing his forest walk thing to put out fires in Nihilus.
>>97355569Fuckin forgot to post before I went to bed. Sorry for leaving you hanging. My personal experience boils down to a single utter shitshow of a game which didn't even last a session, because the GM quite literally opened with "Okay so you're all on a spaceship and you want to go do some heresy, there's three planets nearby, a forgeworld, an agriworld, and a hiveworld, pick one and then go kill some people." The situation devolved from there. Note the distinct lack of "who are your guys and what are their motives, why are you all working together, what's your objective" in there. An hour in and nobody's mentioned my name once, the GM clearly doesn't care to go into enough detail to make tech-use applicable, so I mentally check out, lower the volume to something less distracting, and go finish a video lecture. Get up for a bathroom break, come back, the server's fucking gone. I ask my buddy, another player, what the fuck happened, and he just says "Sometimes you gotta rip it out root and stem, man."Now that's just a shit GM being a shit GM, but it's representative of a subset of people who are only there to do lolrandom dumbfuckery. Black Crusade attracts those like flies, because they see "this game is about being horrible evil chaos bastards" and they think "oh, finally, a game for me!" They don't want to engage with the game as it's meant to be played, they want to use it as an excuse to act in ways that are unacceptable at a table, and they think the subject matter gives them that excuse. Y'know, like FATAL.This is not exclusive to the lolrandoms, either, but I'm fresh out of brain juice so I'm just gonna tell you to imagine That Guy, think about what makes him That Guy, and think about whether he thinks he could use Black Crusade as an excuse for being That Guy. I'm telling you, man, it's like flies. And it's fucking shameful, because the careful political aspects of balancing a chaos warband are actually a compelling premise.
Hey thereI've decided to start a West Marches-style campaign on my LGS. It sounds the perfect style to run for a public setting w/ rotating players, but I myself have never DMed oneAny experiences, tips and advices regarding DM-ing/playing West Marches style games?Or general tips for running games on LGS ? For those unfamiliar with West Marches style, here is what google have to say about it:>Player-Driven Exploration: Players decide where to go and what to explore, venturing into unknown territory from a safe starting town.>Rotating Cast: A large pool of players participates, but different combinations of adventurers form parties for each session, preventing the need for a single regular group.>Sandbox World: The world is a sandbox, with the map and plot emerging as players discover new locations and rumors, rather than being dictated by the GM.>No Fixed Schedule: Sessions occur when players organize themselves, often on a voluntary basis.>Low GM Prep: The Game Master (GM) focuses on creating a world and potential encounters, responding to player choices, rather than crafting complex plots.>Self-Contained Sessions: Adventures are often designed to be resolved in a single session, with storylines evolving over time.Comment too long. >>97355649>>97355711Adding to this... I literally almost fell to the quantum ogre theory when I started to plan this campaign:>decided that first session would not start in camp>instead, players will have fled the sinking ship on a long boat and land somewhere else on the coast>first quest is to find the remaining of the survivors (aka the camp)>players have two options - follow the coast north or south>one is where the rest of the survivors are, the other now>"but what if they go wrong way? maybe i should put the survivors to any direction they go">immediately realized *THAT* would be textbook quantum ogresNow I'm between either dropping that idea and already starting at camp w/ ~3 rumors (what I had in mind for session 2), or maybe still do the idea but set camp on a fixed direction (effectively keying it to a hex), and in case they go to another direction too badIn the latter case, penalty for not finding the rest of the crew would be missing an experience reward from doing the objective, but still they could just go another route or even decide to fuck it and go deeper into the continent to see what's there. Depending on how far they explore, they could potentially make as much experience not following the objectiveComment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>97355767>Thoughts anyone? You've got more than enough ideas that its getting in the way of running your game. Really. Its just piling more shit on at this point and I get you're excited about a thing but the more you fantasize about it before playing it the worse its going to get.
>>97355777Well, if I could I would have scheduled the first session for today (Tuesday night), but manager from the LGS said there were already too many groups playing today and asked to start at next week insteadWhile I agree that thinking too much can be a problem, I'm actually getting A LOT of prep done these past few days. Currently, I'm researching combat balance tips and CR monsters to put together interesting tables of what can be featured on which biome and whatnot. Nevertheless, some ideas that come to me I just put them on hold because there are things that are simply not worth thinking about at this stageOne thing that came to me right now is:>my play test session has only 3 PCs atm>however, I'm "balancing" everything to be at least 4 PCs>considering inviting one of the "official" players to the test session (lets call him Bob)>that could potentially make the test session an official session>next Tuesday, I would tell the new players that the Bob's PC arrived in the camp later and already explored the wildernessThis would be interesting because it would fix the size problem for my test group, and would link both groups together - that way, if the group I'm using for test decides to keep playing the WM campaign, I could run that group in parallel (that would be schedule efficient since we already meet every week anyways) while already having a connection to the "main" LGS groupHelps that Bob already knows my core group since they are all part of my MtG draft group
Color scheme looks shitty, but I've been testing the map generation procedure in hand (plus, getting familiar with it - the hex copy feature is still a bit harder to remember the directions)
>>97355767I think you should abandon the idea and just start with the camp with some rumours. Having your first session be set up differently than the rest of it just seems strange, especially because so few of the players will actually get to experience it.However, if you do stick with this and want to avoid quantum ogres, I would let them make a choice but give them very strong indicators that one direction likely has more shipwreck and maybe more people, while the other direction is complete wilderness. Otherwise having them choose to go north vs south is a meaningless choice anyway.>>97355904This feels a little strange to do. I could imagine a new player being put off by "hey this one dude already has gotten to explore the world a little bit with my friends, a group that you'll never meet". Also I think having some people that are part of the campaign but who never meet or interact with any of the other people might also feel odd, as I imagine that ideally everyone in the LGS group would end up at least get acquainted with everyone else. Having a separate group completely disconnected from that would be weird. I don't think it's a huge deal though if you really want to do it
