Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:>n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128>Need a starter dungeon? How much would/should changing the default setting from High Medieval to Late Bronze Age change the game? For example, lowering AC across the board to simulate the lack of general armour. How much would that affect balance?
>>97350771He said bronze age, not necessarily India. Set it in Egypt or China and they'd actually be civilized.
>>97353870Nah glass making goes all the way back to the third millenium bce. By the late bronze age it's everywhere. Crete, Hattusa, Egypt, Mesopotamia and even the Mycenians all made it. Here's a pic of some bronze age, egyptian glass. It's all made in a kiln and doesn't look anything like what you and I think of as glass, but this is pretty much what most of the iron age had, too.
>>97354870(PS: I picked that one 'cuz you can google-lens it for a museum link showing when it's made around 1300bce)
>>97353684Thanks! They start in Ugaritu w/ a lecture from the king who relates that crete is getting all fucked up and even the hittite empire is under attack from unknown raiders at Wilusa (that'd be troy). It seems like something is happening in the chaos of the ocean and the world is falling apart. So take the king's cylinder seal, go find out what the gods are so pissed about, and figure out how to fix it! I'm keeping monsters to possibly-not-extinct megfauna and their magic is all around buffs and healing and weather. The idea being "wait is this really monsters and magic, or just natural shit and we're all dellusional?" We haven't started, yet, because we're also playing Spelljammer. But they'll have the king's dispensation, start out in bronze-age Canaan, and have to go figure out what's up.
>>97353870>>97354870Just cuz it's fun here's an 18th/19th dynasty 13th 14th century) glass from egypt, as well as some actual glass ingots found from a bronze-age shipwreck.
What can you do to make bandit encounters more immersive and interesting than the old ambush-fight shtick?
>>97352869>Throats cut, boxes broken open, and a hasty trail leading off in the forest nearby. You listen closely to hear laughter and lots of noise which means lots of men.You know, turning to banditry does not automatically require one to have an IQ below room temperature. The rest of these read like you asked chat GPT for a response.
>>97349486Make the bandits real bastards. Like not the fantasy type of baby-eating bastard but like the real world type of thug bastard that is all too familiar to modern day people.Fighting them will feel very satisfying.
Instead of money, the bandits demands some useless mundane item from the group. Depending how interested your group is for the reason behind it you spin the story further>the bandits demand every scissors you have on hand>turns out they actually used to be normal farmers but are now enslaved by a hag>the hag uses all those scissors to create a scissor-golem>she sends it out to terrorize the coutryside
>Bandits are 12-15 years old, their armor doesn't fit and they clearly don't know how to hold their weapons properly>Bandits perform a hit-and-run kidnapping on the party cleric/healer to tend to an injured one of their number at their hideout>One of the bandits looks suspiciously like a noble's missing son>Bandits are guarding a bridge. You can either best one in single combat or make one laugh to cross
Loli banditsLet your players show their power level.

It would a shame to part with such history merely because its colours have faded under the suns of endless campaigning...No but unironically it looks top, maybe like go back in to add more highlights or something? I love the Saxon theme, one of the better german heraldic traditions if you ask me. The weird vegetal crown they have that Barbarossa allegedly gave them, the wild man motif, it all works very well for Warhammer. Could make an entire jade order themed army out of it with some digging. Also I cba to check that rn, but I'm almost certain there's Wildmen motifs used in like Mordheim at least, it's such an obvious thing. I think it definitely works for an Empire army. Mordheim had endless illustrations based on weird Renaissance symbols like that (green lions, green suns, knight & death, talking animals, gargantua-style wreathed ogres) so to me those fit perfectly with the Empire aesthetic, even if they're maybe not as present in WHFB.
>>97317329>cultists are alpha legion onlyI don't think we do.
>>97317329It's crazy to me to think that in a hobby where the only barrier to using old content is... nothing... so many people justbhave accepted the idea that they have to use the latest edition. These are books bro, absolutely nothing forces you to use the new ones as long as you can access old pdfs. It's like with DnD, I just never moved on from 3.5e. I occasionally play older editions but why would I ever use the newer ones? I just don't need it. It's not the same style of game so I just don't play it and I never will. That wotc releases content for it means nothing to me. Might as well be a brand of barbie dolls or expensive watches for all I pay attention to it.

>>97352674What are these radical ‘fixes’ then? I’m genuinely curious. Worst-case scenario you give us all some pointless well-worn platitudes, at best you save some lives from waste.I think referring to depression as ‘mental weakness’ is pretty reductionist too - Lincoln, Churchill, Newton, Grant all suffered from awful depression and achieved great things - and that’s before we even get into all the great contributions to the arts made by people exhibiting this ‘mental weakness’.
>>97353733Lovely stuff.
>>97354566>mental weaknessNTA, but calling it weakness is entirely accurate. A man who can't pick up his infant son is just objectively physically weak (ie. less strong than expected for his species). A man who can't get arsed to get out of bed and provide for himself and his family is mentally weak (ie. less motivated or disciplined than expected for his species). And I'm saying this as someone who still "deals with depression" or whatever we're gonna call being a weak cunt.Acknowledging your weaknesses as weaknesses and flaws is a necessary step in overcoming them. People achieving things despite their weaknesses does not mean that they didn't have those weaknesses or that those things weren't weak, just that they overcame them or compensated.A deaf nigga that paints a nice painting is still deaf (ie. having extremely weak hearing). The cure for weakness is strength.
Depression is just not enjoying life, it's that simple. This anon is retarded >>97354667

>>97354869NTA but using that word alone makes you the pretentious one. Besides, it's lore that was clearly thought out and vibes with the idea of making the setting more spiritual and magical as opposed to white wolf's cynicism and ham fisted deconstruction.

I had no idea there was so much hate towards the Verbena. >>97275738Well-written story, as always. Although I always thought that the Backrooms are most effective as horror when there's no controlling them; they're not magic in the traditional sense, something that can be affected by rituals or channelling some ethereal force. They're just unknowable, a break in reality. Maybe you can learn enough to map them, but how or why they come to be are beyond human understanding.>>97284799>>97284807>>97284820This is actually a really interesting concept. Assassins' Guilds are very common tropes in fantasy but they're rarely female, and I don't think I've ever heard of an organisation of anti-assassins.Also, 'Midwife of Serpents' is an extremely cool name for the head of an all-female assassins' guild.
