>>97351627The diplomacy is the interesting part (to me). Livius writes some very entertaining speeches for the various Greek factions as the Romans and Macedonians vie for their support. Then there's the naval battles, naval siege, concerns for winter quarters and all that. The actual battles are very short, the maneuvering and planning is where it's most interesting. Suits itself to a campaign game more than single battles I'll admit.Alexander and the successors have some good battles. A great one is the siege of Tyre where they built a dam to the (then) island fortress, still visible today.>>97351443> Germans defeat the soviets by... surrounding them> Canadians defeat germans by...shooting at them as they walked forward> Hitler was defeated because...their lines were biggerWW2 warfare is just endless hordes of Shootmen smashing into each other. >>97352674What are these radical ‘fixes’ then? I’m genuinely curious. Worst-case scenario you give us all some pointless well-worn platitudes, at best you save some lives from waste.I think referring to depression as ‘mental weakness’ is pretty reductionist too - Lincoln, Churchill, Newton, Grant all suffered from awful depression and achieved great things - and that’s before we even get into all the great contributions to the arts made by people exhibiting this ‘mental weakness’.
>>97353733Lovely stuff.
What can you do to make bandit encounters more immersive and interesting than the old ambush-fight shtick?
>>97353837Feels like something like that would be a stronger encounter than what the "bandit" moniker usually implies. That's like throwing an enemy PC at the party.
>>97349486The bandits have their Cocks out during the fight, fully hard, but never explained. If any character interrogates them they just look confused and if push comes to shove will swallow a false tooth poison pill.
>>97349486Mounted bandits that actually use their mobility and the shock of their mounts.I had a Runequest campaign end abruptly when two Orlanthi stock-rustlers on ponies came down the road, and my players both decided to jump out in front of them; they both died instantly, as they were playing naked feral Telmori wolfmen, and had neglected to buff themselves or tranform into wolf shape.Their hacked and trampled bodies were left by the roadside.

I think the truth is more pathetic, though. The mod is mad that he's being "told what to do" and is actively allowing spamming so people correctly trying to get this idiot gone don't "win."
>>97349486I think in general bandits are commonly thought of as brutes living outside of society and robbing/raping/murdering their way through a usually meager existence. What if they're not counting on common armed robbery, but instead have more of a black market vibe going on? And when you meet them, they're not doing anything to harm you but trying to get through with whatever illicit goods they're transporting. Like some abducted young females and / or illegal reagents/magic stuff/weapons.The party would be challenged to notice what is happening, and then be challenged to decide what course of action to take. Perhaps they keep their heads down and avoid conflict, or they demand a bribe. Or they attack then and there (make sure the bandits form a visibly possibly deadly encounter). They might also follow the bandits back and try to free the captives silently... Or become the ambushing party and see if they can kill some bandits in their sleep. Another option is to have two groups be mid-combat, and both claim the others to be bandits. What group will they help out and "kingmake"? Or will they just let the combat run its course? Will they "third party" the whole lot and take all the loot? Or will they pacify the fight and try to get them to leave each other alone, thereby becoming part of the issue of whose goods are these anyway. You might sprinkle some evidence to the truth around the scene for players who wish to engage in that route or just keep it a coin toss.Third option is the bandits are con artists of some type and will try to swindle the party. Snake oil, soothsaying or acting like victims and pickpocketing. Or they might send the party out to a nearby dungeon and hope to loot the corpses after the inevitable failure.Fourth option is that bandits prefer soft targets, and adventuring parties are not such targets. So they try to get away. Up to the party to decide if they give chase or leave it.

>>97354091I'm not sure it's worse or better in 2024. 2024 is a short rest healing in a box plus a healing buff for spell based healers. 2014 is just a once per rest heal that provides no passive benefits.Multiple characters might want 2024 healer. 2014 healer was only takeable by maybe a Thief.
Anyone willing to look at a homebrew that I'm worried is busted for me? It's intended to be steeped in flavor, rather than abject efficacy. I must also confess that writing something dark, without coming off as an edgy tryhard donut steele retard is very difficult. Also, there is admittedly a massive amount of narrative context that's missing here; trust that it's relevant. The Mastery is a completely intentional choice and I am fully aware of its potential implications. And no, it does NOT require attunement. That hyper-flexibility is a large degree of the power budget of its status as a legendary item.
>>97344587Why does necessity have to get in the way of coziness?Take Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: the stakes are high and your mission is dire (you gotta collect 3 macguffin drops every year to power the macguffin crystal that keeps your village safe from the poisonous Plot Air, failure means your entire village gets wiped off the map) but the moment to moment story is still a comfy adventure of discovery, road trips, new experiences, and the importance of memories. Coziness comes from tone and themes, not a lack of stakes or peril.

>>97354367I'm not wanking off to the rape and incest, just admiring it thematically as an underrepresented yet universal aspect of tragic stories.Ancient histories, pseudohistories, religious texts and folk stories were not bound by the constraints of a pg13 rating.Shit, Ovid literally credits Orpheus with inventing pederasty.Which grossed me out, because I only like to "artistically admire" rape and incest between fully developed tragic degenerates. But well, like I said, Ovid is a satirist, so reading his characterizations as conventional is a questionable proposition.Shit, Zeus alone is a one man bastard factory, not all willing.Odin also rapes the Jotunn Rindr, using sorcery and begets the god Valli upon her.TIn the most ancient Gaelic rite of kingship, the sacral king rapes the sacred mare, representing the Ouranic male mastering the Cthonic feminine, then the animal is killed and butchered, and the king climbs into the cauldron when the meat is cooked, and portions out the meat to his retainers, and the broth to his subjects. This is basically an iteration on a Scythian horse sacrifice rite, which is also related to Vedic horse sacrifice; the Gaels themselves claimed to come from Scythia, the claim is called a pseudohistory by some, but this rite may represent a profoundly relict mode of worship, preserved across great spans of time and distance.Comment too long. Any good RPGs for doorkicking combat? Something kinda slick but hyper lethal, letting the PCs take down most mooks pretty quickly but always having the chance to lose it all with poor tactics. I've been running RED and it feels a bit pillow fisted but my group is afraid of RPGs from before the turn of the millennium
